Mechanistic study on the removal of Cs from contaminated soil by rapid ion exchange in subcritical water

As a result of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident in March 2011, massive amounts of soil were contaminated with radioactive Cs. To remediate the contaminated soil, we are developing a desorption technique for removing Cs from soil using subcritical water. We found that rapid ion exchange of Cs with multivalent cations in subcritical water is an effective desorption technique. To understand the mechanism and structural aspects of this process, in situ observations of the soil layer in subcritical water were carried out by high-energy X-ray diffraction together with pair distribution function analysis, and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Both the desorption experiments and structural studies indicated that conformational changes of the layer containing Cs$$^{+}$$ under subcritical water conditions promoted intercalation of the hydrated Mg and trapped Cs$$^{+}$$, which facilitated a rapid ion-exchange reaction of Mg$$^{2+}$$ and Cs$$^{+}$$.

A fundamental issue concerning iron-based superconductivity is the roles of electronic nematicity and magnetism in realising high transition temperature ($$T_c$$). To address this issue, FeSe is a key material, as it exhibits a unique pressure phase diagram involving nonmagnetic nematic and pressure-induced antiferromagnetic ordered phases. However, as these two phases in FeSe have considerable overlap, how each order affects superconductivity remains perplexing. Here we construct the three-dimensional electronic phase diagram, temperature ($$T$$) against pressure ($$P$$) and iso-valent S-substitution ($$x$$), for FeSe$$_{1-x}$$S$$_x$$. By simultaneously tuning chemical and physical pressures, against which the chalcogen height shows a contrasting variation, we achieve a complete separation of nematic and antiferromagnetic phases. In between, an extended nonmagnetic tetragonal phase emerges, where $$T_c$$ shows a striking enhancement. The completed phase diagram uncovers that high-$$T_c$$ superconductivity lies near both ends of the dome-shaped antiferromagnetic phase, whereas $$T_c$$ remainslow near the nematic critical point.

Gyrokinetic analyses of core heat transport in JT-60U plasmas with different toroidal rotation direction

The internal transport barriers (ITBs) formed in the tokamak plasmas with the weak magnetic shear and the weak radial electric field shear are often observed and the pressure gradient at the ITB is not very steep. In such plasmas the electron temperature ITB is steeper for co toroidal rotation cases than that for counter rotation cases. Clarifying the relationship between the rotation direction and heat transport in the ITB region, dominant instabilities are examined by the flux-tube gyrokinetic code GS2 to show that the linear growth rates $$gamma$$ for the co and counter rotation cases are comparable in magnitude, but the counter case shows the more trapped electron mode like frequency. The ratio of the electron heat diffusivity to the ion's is higher for the counter-rotation case. The difference in the ratio between the two cases agrees with the experiment. Investigating the flow shear effect on $$gamma$$ reveals that its effect is not so large as to change the aforementioned tendency.

Turbulence analyses of improved electron energy confinement in H-mode plasmas with gyrokinetic calculations

In burning plasmas, the electron temperature $$T_mathrm{e}$$ is expected to exceed the ion temperature $$T_mathrm{i}$$ because of the alpha heating. The transport simulations showed that an increase in $$T_mathrm{e}/T_mathrm{i}$$ degrades the confinement. However in the International Global H-mode Confinement Database, there are data that have the $$H_mathrm{H}$$ factor exceeding unity in the $$T_mathrm{e}>T_mathrm{i}$$ region. This high $$H_mathrm{H}$$ can be attributed mainly to the improved electron confinement. The conditions required for the improvement have been investigated with the local flux-tube gyrokinetic code GS2. When the ion temperature gradient length is shorter than the electron one, ion temperature gradient (ITG) mode is dominant, whereas trapped electron mode (TEM) is stabilized. Under this situation, the electron heat diffusivity is suppressed. In addition, an increase in the magnetic shear also decreases the electron heat transport in the positive shear range.

強誘電体BaTiO$$_{3}$$のBa 5d軌道の電子状態を放射光共鳴発光により調べ、誘電性を持たないBaSO$$_{4}$$と比較した。Ba-L$$_{3}$$吸収端近傍において共鳴発光スペクトルを測定したところ、両方の化合物ともBa 5d電子は局在していることがわかった。一方、共鳴発光を利用した部分蛍光法吸収スペクトルを測定したところ、BaTiO$$_{3}$$のほうがBaSO$$_{4}$$よりもエネルギー幅の広いピークが観測された。すなわち、BaTiO$$_{3}$$のBa 5d軌道は、O 2p軌道と混成していることがわかった。これは、BaTiO$$_{3}$$の強誘電性はTi-Oの混成により発現するとされてきた従来の見解と異なり、Baイオンも強誘電相転移に何らかの役割を果たすことを示唆する。

It was shown experimentally the possibility of nanostructuring (about 20 nm) of gold surface by picosecond soft X-ray single pulse with low fluence of 20 mJ/cm$$^{2}$$. The nanometer-scale changes of the surface structure are due to the splash of molten gold under fluence gradient of the laser beam. In addition, the ablation process occurs at slightly higher fluence of 50 mJ/cm$$^{2}$$. The atomistic model of ablation is developed that reveals that the low threshold fluence of this process is due to the build-up of the high electron pressure and the comparatively low electron-ion energy relaxation rate in gold.


Analysis of $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ effect on confinement properties

In order to improve the prediction capability of confinement properties in burning plasmas with intensive electron heating, we have re-visited the DB3v10 International H-mode Confinement Database with emphasis on the temperature ratio $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ and considerations on kinetic profiles. It was thereby found that the impact of $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ is more apparent for discharges with peaked density profiles. Namely, HH factor improves with an increase of peakedness in the density profile for $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ $$<$$1, whereas it tends to deteriorate with the density peaking for $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ $$>$$1. The confinement scaling with a contribution of $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ was also elaborated. In addition, the influence of $$T$$$$_{rm e}$$/$$T$$$$_{rm i}$$ described above was examined qualitatively with GLF23 and GS2 codes, which provided results corroborating the performed regression analysis, indicating the interplays of ITG and TEM.

By electrically detected magnetic resonance spectroscopy under low-temperature, the microscopic behavior of nitrogen atoms in the SiC-SiO$$_{2}$$ interface regions of n-channel 4H-Silicon Carbide (SiC) Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors (MOSFETs) was investigated. As a result, it was found that shallow interface states were eliminated by nitrogen atoms located near the interface. Also, nitrogen atoms showed diffusion into the channel region of the MOSFETs, and acted as shallow donors. These two behaviors enable nitrogen atoms to enhance the channel mobility of electrons in SiC MOSFETs.
