In order to investigate the amount of powder supplied and formation process of the copper layer, the process of forming a pure copper layer on SUS304 was observed using synchrotron X-ray. At 80 mg/s, it can be seen that a thicker pure copper layer is formed. It was confirmed that the pure copper thickness depended on the powder feed rate. It can be seen that the thickest layer is formed at a powder feed rate of 80 mg/s at a layer thickness at 40 ms. Based on the results obtained from copper layer, pure copper was stacked upward (direction Z) to form a pure copper wire. And since a thin molten pool was formed only in a limited area, it was observed that the molten pool was piled up with thin molten layer. It was melted to form a rod with 50 mm length for 25 second. It was confirmed that there were no pore in pure copper rod.

To clarify the formation mechanism of the pure copper layer, the formation process using a blue direct diode laser system was observed using in situ X-ray observations. The stainless steel 304 substrate melts, generating bubbles in the molten pool at a laser power density of 7.2 10 W/cm and a scanning speed of 3.0 mm/s. At a laser scanning speed of 9.0 mm/s, the bubbles disappear because only a slightly molten pool is formed on the surface of the substrate. The bubble amount and penetration depth depend on the laser input energy with a blue direct diode laser. By controlling the amount of input energy, a copper coating is produced minutely without a weld penetration.
