Modelling and simulation of the source term for a sodium cooled fast reactor under hypothetical severe accident conditions; Final report of a coordinated research project

Arokiaswamy, J. A.*; Batra, C.*; Chang, J. E.*; Garcia, M.*; Herranz, L. E.*; Klimonov, I. A.*; Kriventsev, V.*; Li, S.*; Liegeard, C.*; Mahanes, J.*; et al.

The IAEA coordinated research project on "Radioactive Release from the Prototype Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor under Severe Accident Conditions" was devoted to realistic numerical simulation of fission products and fuel particles inventory inside the reference sodium cooled fast reactor volumes under severe accident conditions at different time scales. The scope of analysis was divided into three parts, defined as three work packages (WPs): (1) in-vessel source term estimation; (2) primary system/containment system interface source term estimation; and, (3) in-containment phenomenology analysis. Comparison of the results obtained in WP-1 indicates that the release fractions of noble gases and cesium radionuclides, and fractions of radionuclides released to the cover gas are in a good agreement. In the analysis using a common pressure history in WP-2, the results were in good agreement indicating that the accuracy of the analysis method of each institution is almost the same. The standalone case, which uses a set of pre-defined release fractions, was defined for WP-3 which enables to decouple this part of analysis from previous WPs. There is broad consensus among the predicted results by all the participants in WP-3.

Towards $$CP$$-violation studies on superheavy molecules; Theoretical and experimental perspectives

We provide detailed theoretical studies of quantities relevant to the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM) and nucleus-electron scalar-pseudoscalar interactions in diatomic molecules containing superheavy lawrencium nuclei. The sensitivity to parity and time (or, equivalently, $$CP$$) reversal violating properties is studied for different neutral and ionic molecules. The effective electric fields in these systems are found to be about 3$$sim$$4 times larger than other known molecules on which eEDM experiments are being performed. Similarly, these superheavy molecules exhibit an enhancement of more than 3 times for $$CP$$-violating scalar-pseudoscalar nucleus-electron interactions. Our preliminary analysis using the Woods-Saxon nuclear model also demonstrates that these results are sensitive to the diffuse surface interactions inside the Lr nucleus.

Radiocesium in Shiitake mushroom; Accumulation in living fruit bodies and leaching from dead fruit bodies

Cesium (Cs) accumulation by Shiitake was investigated to contribute to the elucidation of radiocesium-cycling mechanisms in forest environments. The results demonstrate that Shiitake non-specifically accumulates Cs while accumulating the essential element K and provide evidence that no selective Cs accumulation (or binding) sites exist within the Shiitake fruit body. Furthermore, the present results show that most accumulated Cs quickly leaches out from the dead fruit body with exposure to water. The leached Cs was largely adsorbable on clay minerals, suggesting that the Shiitake fruit body likely contains Cs in the cation form.

Fatigue crack propagation experimental evaluation and modeling in an austenitic steel elbow from a LMFBR primary system piping

Garcia Rodriguez, D.; Sakakibara, Yasuhide*

Proceedings of 2014 ASME Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2014) (DVD-ROM), 9 Pages, 2014/07

The behavior of high temperature (400$$^{circ}$$C) low-cycle fatigue crack propagation during in-plane bending of an elbow from Monju LMFBR is presented in three stages. 1st, experimental measurements made in a real-size laboratory specimen are presented. This test was carried out under displacement-controlled conditions, with artificial defects introduced in the crown parts, where the maximum stress arises. 2nd, the experimental setup is simulated making use of FEA, in order to obtain the actual stress distribution through the loaded elbow. Finally, based on the FEA data, deterministic fatigue crack propagation based on the J-integral criterion is compared with the experimental data.

3D FEA elastoplastic structural analysis of hypothetically cracked Monju FBR core support structures

Garcia Rodriguez, D.; Matsubara, Shinichiro

Proceedings of 22nd International Conference on Nuclear Engineering (ICONE-22) (DVD-ROM), 9 Pages, 2014/07

Structural reliability of the circumferentially cracked core support mount of Monju FBR is analyzed using FEA. The 3D shell model employed was derived after detailed evaluation of the core support mount behavior with a specific 3D solid model. 1st, elastoplastic static analysis shows that, under nominal operating conditions, the overall structure would be able to survive a total loss of the core support mount. 2nd, using the double elastic slope method it was inferred that earthquake loading integrity could be warranted up to a crack representing over 50% of the total circumference.

In Japan and within the nuclear industry, four years and counting

Garcia Rodriguez, D.

Hozengaku, 12(4), p.45 - 47, 2014/01

In this short letter to appear in the Japanese Society of Maintenology's next issue, I present my living and working experience in Japan during the past 4 years. I came to live here for the first time in 2005, and stayed for one year as a fellow of the EU-JP Center for Industrial Cooperation Vulcanus Program, while carrying an 8 months internship at Hitachi GE Nuclear Energy. Then, after a 4 year break to obtain my PhD at the French Atomic Commission, I enrolled in JAEA as a permanent researcher in 2010.

Under Broader Approach (BA) Agreement between EURATOM and Japan, IFMIF/EVEDA (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility/Engineering Validation and Engineering Design Activities) has been performed since the middle of 2007. The present EVEDA phase aims at producing a detailed, compete and fully integrated engineering design of IFMIF. The deivery of the Intermediate IFMIF engineering design report is foreseen mid-2013. The main function of the IFMIF is to provide the materials database for the design and licensing of DEMO reactor and further fusion rectors from the material sets irradiated in High Flux Test Modules (HFTM, Startup Monitoring Module), Medium Flux Test Modules (Creep Fatigues Test Module, Tritium Release Test Module, Liquid Breeder Validation Module) and Low Flux Test Modules of IFMIF. This paper is summarizing the current progress of the engineering design of the test modules within the IFMIF/EVEDA project.
