Numerical simulation code, based on multi-phase thermohydraulics, has been being developed with a goal of a control and prediction for the laser cutting process. A thermohydraulic numerical simulation of the laser steel cutting was carried out to confirm an assist gas and sweep velocity effect to the cutting performance. The performance was evaluated, based on temperature profile and cutting front formation. Simulation results were as follows. If there was no effect of dross ejection by assist gas, a laser light was absorbed into molten steel stagnated in the kerf. Therefore, there was less laser heat input to a solid surface directly. Then, heat transport to the back side of steel plate got delayed. In the case of faster sweep velocity, delay of heat conduction and failure cut were confirmed at behind the cut starting position of the steel plate. Failure cut at the position was observed in our experiments. From these results, it was concluded that the thermohydraulics in the kerf takes important role for not only dross ejection but also promotion of heat input at solid surface.

Velocity measurement by PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and measurement of fluid-temperature are conducted in a mixing tee with an elbow on the upstream side of the tee. Parameters in the experiment are the distance between the elbow pipe exit and the tee and the curvature radius of the elbow pipe. By the experiment, certain suppression techniques for high cycle thermal fatigue in the mixing tee area are proposed to control the distance between the elbow and the tee according to the curvature radius of the elbow.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon-carbon Composites, C/C composites, have been developed and extensively studied their characteristics. C/C composites are considered to be promising materials for the application of a control rod in the next high performance high temperature gas-cooled reactors. In the present paper, details of the development of the candidate C/C composite are described. In the course of the development of the material, especially, feasibility of the production, stableness of the supply and cost are much taken into consideration. As the physical properties of the material, high mechanical strength such as tensile and bending, high fracture strain and fracture toughness and low dimensional change by neutron irradiation have to be met. The developed 2D-C/C composite consists of plain-weave PAN-based carbon fiber cloth and pitch derived matrix. Also, high purification up to the level of nuclear grade was successfully attained in the composite.

At the commercial use stage in sodium-cooled fast breeder reactors, a securing maintenance and repair more than the equal to that of present water-cooled reactors is requested. We are aiming at the standardization of fiber laser welding technology using minuteness metal powder that three-dimensional micro-fabrication is possible as the repair technology. In the present study, the internal distribution of residual stresses in materials by the welding technology is evaluated methodologically. Now, the specimens welded under various laser conditions were made for the S50C (steel with 0.50% carbon). The surface residual stress of the specimens is measured by using laboratory X-rays. On the other hand, the measurement of internal distribution of residual stress will be carried out by using high energy synchrotron radiation X-rays in the SPring-8 facility.
