Analyses of the ERA-Interim reanalysis data and the total ozone observed by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument indicate that the total ozone reduction event was caused by a migration of the polar vortex toward the South American continent at the time of the vortex breakup. The vortex migration is associated with an enhanced wave flux from the troposphere at 120-150W and 50-60S to the west of the South American continent to the stratosphere over the southern part of the continent, which led to a large negative geopotential height anomaly in the lower stratosphere. In November, a blocking event was diagnosed from the 500-hPa geopotential height over the west of the South American continent. These results suggest a relation between the long-lasting reduction of the total ozone over the southern tip of South America and the blocking phenomenon in the troposphere of the Southern Hemisphere through wave propagation from the blocking region in 2009. Analysis of the total ozone anomaly for 50-60S and 65-75W over the southern tip of South America in November for 1979-2015 indicates that the negative ozone anomaly in November 2009 was one of the largest anomalies in this 37-year period and was associated with the large negative geopotential height anomaly in the lower stratosphere. Analyses of dynamical fields were also conducted for other years with large geopotential height anomalies.

In this project, we constructed the pulsed neutron beamline that was aimed to obtain neutron capture cross-sections of long-lived fission products and minor actinides accurately. The energy spectra, spatial distributions, and pulses of the beam were studied by measurements and simulation calculations, and they were found to be consistent with those of the beamline design. In this paper, we present the overview of the project and the properties of the neutron beam provided by this beam line.

Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured = -0.0014 0.0037 at the lowest bin and -0.0181 0.0282 at the highest bin. The measured is compared with the predictions that assume various distributions.

The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, and , determining the high and characterizing the low regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

The element irradiation tests have been also conducted to confirm that no impact will be foreseen by the irradiation. The effectiveness of SASS for a reference core design of JSFR has been evaluated through all types of ATWS. As a result, it is ensured that JSFR will have a reliable passive shutdown system.

As the samples, a liquid nitrogen target and a deuterated melamine (CDN) were used. The previous values widely used as intensity standards agreed with those obtained in this study within 4-5% in the 2-11 MeV region, however, showed a monotonous decrease with the increase of -ray energy.

A Time-of-Flight neutron beam line for the experiment has been constructed at the KURRI electron LINAC. The assembling of the 4 Ge spectrometer is in progress. We are also developing a new data acquisition system based on a digital processing technique.

Self actuated shutdown system (SASS) with a Curie point electromagnet (CPEM) is being developed for use in a large scale fast breeder reactor (FBR) in order to establish the passive shutdown capability against anticipated transient without scram (ATWS) events. In order to confirm the stability of CPEM in holding the control rod and demonstrate the functions of the driving system to re-connect and pull out the control rod under the actual reactor-operational environment, the component function test using the reduced-scale model experimental equipment of SASS was conducted in the experimental fast reactor JOYO MK-III. As a result of this test conducted for 117 days during the 1st and 2nd operational cycles of JOYO MK-III from May to Oct. 2004, the rod-holding stability and the recovering functions of the driving system were fully confirmed. A neutron fluence of over 61018n/cm2 (E0.1MeV) was obtained for CPEM. This corresponded to 60 years of use in a large-scale FBR and satisfied the required fluence for stability assurance. The results also will likely dispel the apprehensiveness about the operational trouble involving the unexpected drop of SASS.
