By means of $$^{27}$$Al NMR studies, we have investigated magnetic excitations and the hybridization effect between Pr 4$$f$$ and conduction electrons in a pair of cubic compounds Pr$$Tr$$$$_2$$Al$$_{20}$$ ($$Tr$$=Ti, V). From Knight shift measurements we have evaluated comparative strengths for the $$c$$-$$f$$ hybridization effect in these compounds and confirm a definite increase of hybridization on replacing Ti with V. Analysis of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $$1/T_1$$ reveals that the spectral width of magnetic fluctuations in crystalline electric field excited states is strongly temperature dependent. This result indicates that magnetic fluctuations are dominated by the strong $$c$$-$$f$$ exchange coupling at high temperatures and thus is nicely consistent with the Kondo picture that features ln$$T$$ dependence of resistivity over the same temperature region.

We have succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of a non-4$$f$$ reference compound YCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ for a heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$, and observed the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation. The detected dHvA branches in YCu$$_2$$Si$$_2$$ indicate that the Fermi surfaces are multiply connected, and the dHvA frequencies are in the range from 9$$times10^6$$ to 2$$times10^8$$ Oe. These dHvA branches are found to be well explained by the results of energy band calculations. The corresponding cyclotron masses are light, ranging from 0.4 to 1.5 $$m_0$$, and are consistent with the electronic specific heat coefficient of 2.2 mJ/K$$^2cdot$$mol.

Superconductivity in CeIrSi$$_3$$ realized at the quantum critical point

The magnetic transition temperature of an antiferromagnet CeIrSi$$_3$$ decreases with increasing hydrostatic pressure, and finally superconductivity appears. An exotic superconducting symmetry is expected because of the absence of the inversion center in the crystal structure. One of the prominent features is the anomalously large upper critical field observed around the quantum critical point.

We succeeded in growing a single crystal of a layered compound Lu$$_2$$Rh$$_3$$Ga$$_9$$ with an Y$$_2$$Co$$_3$$Ga$$_9$$-type orthorhombic crystal structure by the Ga-flux method. The lattice, positional, and thermal parameters were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurement. We also measured the electrical resistivity, specific heat, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. The detected dHvA branches were well explained by the results of full potential LAPW energy band calculations. The electronic state was found to be quasi-two-dimensional, indicating nearly cylindrical Fermi surfaces along the [001] direction.

Fermi surfaces of the non-centrosymmetric LaTGe$$_3$$ and PrCoGe$$_3$$ have been studied in detail using the de Haas-van Alphen effect. Splitting of the conduction bands due to the spin-orbit interaction was clearly observed. These results are important in understanding the exotic superconductivity realized in non-centrosymmetric structure.

We succeeded in growing a high-quality single crystal of LuCoGa$$_5$$ with the HoCoGa$$_5$$-type tetragonal crystal structure by the Ga self-flux method. The lattice parameters, fractional coordinates, and thermal parameters were determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements. We also measured the electrical resistivity, specific heat, and the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. The Fermi surface mainly consists of two nearly cylindrical Fermi surfaces, which are well explained by the results of full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) energy band calculations.
