The most distinctive feature of the superconducting magnet system for JT-60SA is the optimized coil structure in terms of the space utilization as well as the highly accurate coil manufacturing, thus meeting the requirements for the steady-state tokamak research: A conceptually new outer inter-coil structure separated from the casing is introduced to the toroidal field coils to realize their slender shape, allowing large-bore diagnostic ports for detailed plasma measurements. A method to minimize the manufacturing error of the equilibrium-field coils has been established, aiming at the precise plasma shape/position control. A compact butt-joint has been successfully developed for the Central Solenoid, which allows an optimized utilization of the limited space for the Central Solenoid to extend the duration of the plasma pulse.

Large-scale identification and characterization of alternative splicing variants of human gene transcripts using 56 419 completely sequenced and manually annotated full-length cDNAs

We report the first genome-wide identification and characterization of alternative splicing in human gene transcripts based on analysis of the full-length cDNAs. Applying both manual and computational analyses for 56 419 completely sequenced and precisely annotated full-length cDNAs selected for the H-Invitational human transcriptome annotation meetings, we identified 6877 alternative splicing genes with 18 297 different alternative splicing variants. A total of 37 670 exons were involved in these alternative splicing events. The encoded protein sequences were affected in 6005 of the 6877 genes. Notably, alternative splicing affected protein motifs in 3015 genes, subcellular localizations in 2982 genes and transmembrane domains in 1348 genes. Genome-wide annotations of alternative splicing, relying on full-length cDNAs, should lay firm groundwork for exploring in detail the diversification of protein function which is mediated by the alternative splicing variants.

In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of disasters caused by mudslides due to linear rainfall events such as heavy rains and typhoons. The most effective disaster prevention measures against mudslides are erosion control weirs along valley lines. Japan is an island nation and has an unusually large number of non-permanent, rock-flow hazardous streams, but in many cases, houses are located directly under steep rivers, and erosion control weirs are preferentially installed in areas where disasters have occurred in the past. Although various types of erosion control weirs have been constructed, their structures are based largely on empirical knowledge and are not well designed from the viewpoints of fluid dynamics and geomechanics. In the other hand, most of the previous analyses of pebble flow have been based on one-dimensional shallow-water wave models of the entire flow with coarse meshes, and two-dimensional analyses have only been performed to a limited extent using a few-meter grid. In reality, the debris flows contain various sizes of gravel and driftwood, and it is not yet clear how large gravels in particular affect the flow of the debris flows. In order to investigate the steel spacing of a permeable weir that is effective in stopping large gravels, it is necessary to perform a 3-D simulation of a weir and a stone flow containing many large gravels. To perform the calculations to verify the effectiveness of the weirs for the entire debris flow while resolving the individual gravels requires a large amount of computing resources, and a supercomputer with a large number of GPUs is used.

A capsule irradiation test with the high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) fuel by WWR-K in the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Republic of Kazakhstan (INP) is being carried out. The HTGR fuel specimens were newly designed at the target burnup of 100 GWd/t. A plan of the irradiation test and results on evaluation of the integrity of the HTGR fuel specimen based on fission gas (FP) release rate under the irradiation are reported.

Simulation of debris flow containing huge rocks

The debris flow is very harmful to the safety of human lives and properties when it accompanies floating objects such as rocks, damage is multiplied. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based simulations for the motion and mechanical properties of rock are carried out. The cumulant lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and discrete element method (DEM) are utilized to simulate fluid phase and solid phase respectively. Non-Newtonian fluid is applied to the fluid phase. For the interface capturing method, a conservative Allen-Cahn equation is employed to maintain the mass conservation. In order to increase the computational efficiency, CUDA programming and adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) method are applied.
