The researches on engineering technology in the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) project in FY2016, detailed investigations of the (mechanical) behaviors of the plug and the rock mass around the reflood tunnel through ongoing reflood test were performed as part of (5) development of technologies for restoration and/or reduction of the excavation damage. As the result, particularly for the temperature change of the plug, its analytical results agree fairly well agree with the measurement ones. This means cracks induced by temperature stress can be prevented by the cooling countermeasure works reviewed in designing stage. In addition, for the behaviors of the plug and the bedrock boundary after reflooding the reflood tunnel, comparison between the results obtained by coupled hydro-mechanical analysis (stress-fluid coupled analysis) with the ones by several measurements, concluded that the model established based on the analysis results is generally appropriated.

The researches on examination of the plug applied to the future reflood test was conducted as a part of (5) development of technologies for restoration and/on reduction of the excavation damage relating to the engineering technology in the MIU (2014), specifically focused on (1) plug examination (e.g. functions, structure and material) and the quality control methods and (2) analytical evaluation of rock mass behavior around the plug through the reflood test. As the result, specifications of the plug were determined. These specifications should be able to meet requirements for the safety structure and surrounding rock mass against predicted maximum water pressure, temperature stress and seismic force, and for controlling the groundwater inflow, ensuring the access into the reflood gallery and the penetration performance of measurement cable. Also preliminary knowledge regarding the rock mass behavior around the plug after flooding the reflood gallery by installed plug was obtained.

We have studied the electronic properties of ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using two complementary bulk-sensitive spectroscopic probes, resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS). Contrary to a previous study, we found no temperature change of a PFY-XAS spectrum at the Ba L$$_{3}$$ edge between room temperature and 150$$^{circ}$$C. This result is not supportive of the possible presence of the displacement around Ba$$^{2+}$$ at the Curie temperature. RXES spectra were measured at the Ti K edge for BaTiO$$_{3}$$, along with SrTiO$$_{3}$$ and La-doped metallic SrTiO$$_{3}$$. The photon energy of the emission peak is found to be nearly constant throughout the absorption edge for all three compounds. We deduce the Ti 3d states to have a delocalized character, in contrast with the Ba 5d states, a property which is consistent with the proposed scenario of the formation of electric dipoles in BaTiO$$_{3}$$.

We have directly probed the Ba 5d states in the ferroelectric barium titanate BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the partial fluorescence mode (PFY-XAS) at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge. The results are compared with those of the non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. While the RXES spectra point to a localized character for the Ba 5d states in both compounds, the main peak of the PFY-XAS spectrum, corresponding to the dipolar transitions from 2p to 5d, is found to be significantly broader for BaTiO$$_{3}$$ than for BaSO$$_{4}$$. On the basis of band structure calculations, this broadening is ascribed to strong hybridization between the unoccupied Ba 5d and O 2p states in the ferroelectric. This suggests that the hybridization between the conduction states of the Ba$$^{2+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$ ions, and not only Ti$$^{4+}$$ and O$$^{2-}$$, plays a central role in determining the electronic structure of BaTiO$$_{4}$$.

Resonant X-ray inelastic scattering experiments have been performed at the Ba-L$$_{3}$$ edge in ferroelectric BaTiO$$_{3}$$ using synchrotron radiation at the BL15XU of SPring-8. An X-ray absorption spectrum of this material was found to be broader than non-ferroelectric BaSO$$_{4}$$. Molecular orbital calculations showed the formation of Ba-O bands in BaTiO$$_{3}$$, suggesting an important role of the Ba-O hybridization in the ferroelectric transition of this material. X-ray emission spectra at the edge showed a localized character of Ba-5d orbitals in BaTiO$$_{3}$$ in spite of the hybridization with O-3p. A few possible applications of the measurement will be also discussed.

The International Standard, ISO 4037-1, is applied worldwide for setting the condition of X-ray reference fields to be used for the performance test of radiation measuring instruments for radiation protection. X-ray reference fields were established at the Facility of Radiation Standard in Nuclear Science Research Institute in 2003 and had been operated. Recently, we rebuilt the X-ray reference fields by replacing the X-ray tube with a new model due to the damage of the old one of the middle-hard X-ray irradiation device. We have established three series of medium-hard X-ray reference fields, Narrow, Wide and High air-kerma series with 27 radiation qualities, based on ISO 4037-1. This article described quality of the X-ray fields, X-ray spectra, conversion coefficients to the dose equivalent from Air-kerma and comparison with the quality of ISO 4037-1 in the X-ray fields of medium-hard X-ray voltages ranging from 20 kV to 300 kV. Result of experiments, these X-ray reference fields were well agreed with the condition of the international standard. As a result, these X-ray reference fields were found to be used to carry out the performance test, standard irradiation based on the international standard, and an intercomparison experiment with the reference laboratories in the world.

We have performed neutron powder diffraction of the superconducting FeSr$$_{2}$$YCu$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+}$$$$_{delta}$$ and the nonsuperconducting FeSr$$_{2}$$Y(Cu$$_{0.95}$$Zn$$_{0.05}$$)$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+}$$$$_{delta}$$ samples at low temperature and room temperature to investigate the relation between the crystal structure ant the physical properties. Neutron diffraction study indicates that the magnetic order in this compound is not long-range order because we observed no extra reflection due to the magnetic superstructure. We have observed structural anomaly related to Cu in the superconducting sample around 30 K although we could not observe it in the nonsuperconducting sample. There is possibility of the change of the charge distribution around 30 K in the superconducting sample.

In the Japanese Industrial Standard, JIS Z 4511 sets the condition of X-ray reference fields to be used for the performance test of radiation measuring instruments for radiation protection. We renewed a X-ray tube of the medium-hard X-ray irradiation device that was damaged in the Facility of Radiation Standards in Nuclear Science Research Institute. Therefore, we established four series of medium-hard X-ray reference fields with quality index of 0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 based on JIS Z 4511. In this process, quality of the X-ray fields, X-ray spectra, conversion coefficients to the dose equivalents from Air-kerma were evaluated in the medium-hard X-ray fields produced with X-ray tube voltage ranging from 20kV to 300kV. As a result, medium-hard X-ray reference fields were established that can provide the dose equivalent standard with good precision and wide range of test energy points and dose rates. We clarified these detailed data.

The diagnostic system of JFT-2M has consisted of about 30 individual diagnostic instruments, which were used to study the plasma production, control, equilibrium, stability, confinement, plasma heating by NBI and/or RF (LH, ICRF, ECH) and current drive by RF. In these instruments, the motional Stark effect (MSE) polarimeter, charge exchanged recombination spectroscopy (CXRS), heavy-ion beam probe (HIBP), time of flight (TOF) neutral particle analyzer, etc. have contributed to make clear the improved mechanism of confinement such as H-mode and High Recycling Steady (HRS) H-mode, and to search the operational region of these modes. The infrared TV camera system and lost ion probe have played a very important role to investigate the heat load onto the walls due to ripple loss particles and escaping ions from core plasma, respectively.

The material group that is called smart materials of ferroelectrics, magneto-strictive materials, shape-memory alloys, and hydrogen-storage materials can control physical properties by the elastic strain caused in the crystal. Because the irradiation by the ion beam and the electron beam can efficiently change the elastic strain in the crystal, it is efficient measures to the characteristic modification of a smart material. In this study group, pair-distribution function (PDF) was applied as an new visualization techniques of the crystallographic structure of the irradiation material. It examined whether the irradiation effect of smart materials was extractive by the PDF analysis.

no journal, ,

FeSr$$_{2}$$YCu$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+delta}$$ structure exhibits superconductivity around 60 K, when it is properly annealed in N$$_{2}$$ and subsequently in O$$_{2}$$. In this study, oxygen arrangement in FeSr$$_{2}$$YCu$$_{2}$$O$$_{6+delta}$$ system is investigated by the neutron diffraction method. Cu and Fe in the crystal were ordered by annealing around 700$$^{circ}$$C in N$$_{2}$$ due to structure phase transition from the tetragonal to monoclinic phase with a superlattice structure. It was revealed that the FeO$$_{4}$$ tetrahedron was formed and ordered in the crystal while disordered in the original structure without N$$_{2}$$-annealing. It was observed that the FeO$$_{4}$$ tetrahedron changed to the octahedron by the subsequently annealing in O$$_{2}$$.
