Times Cited Count:0 Percentile:0(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)We develop a mean-field theory of a novel Kondo effect emerging in systems without a Fermi surface, which instead emerges under strong magnetic fields. We determine the magnitude of the Kondo condensate, which is a particle pairing composed of conducting Dirac fermions and localized impurities. We focus on the competition between the Kondo effect and the energy gap formation that stems from the pairing among the Dirac fermions leading to the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. We find that this competition induces a quantum critical point. We also investigate finite-temperature effects. This system at vanishing fermion density can be studied with Monte Carlo lattice simulations, which do not suffer from the sign problem.

The ground state is characterized by magnitudes of the pairing not only between the light quark and antiquark, i.e., chiral condensate, but also between the light quark and heavy-quark impurity, dubbed the Kondo condensate. We propose signatures of the interplay and/or competition between those two pairing phenomena reflected in the magnitude of the chiral condensate that is saturated with respect to the magnetic-field strength and anomalously increases with increasing temperature.

Spectral ansatze on the phenomenological side are proposed in order to properly take into account mixing effects between the pseudoscalar and vector channels, and the Landau levels of charged mesons. The operator product expansion is implemented up to dimension-5 operators. As a result, we find for neutral mesons a significant positive mass shift that goes beyond simple mixing effects. In contrast, charged mesons are further subject to Landau level effects, which together with the mixing effects almost completely saturate the mass shifts obtained in our sum rule analysis.

The proton beams are derived from a thin polyimide target exposed to an high intense Ti:sapphire laser 8 J energy and 40 fs duration. The sample sets, stacked radiochromic film and CR-39 detectors covered with 13 m aluminum filter, are irradiated under vacuum condition. By analyzing the etch pits on the last layer of CR-39 which recorded etchable tracks, the proton energy in high energy region is evaluate more precisely than in the past. The residual ranges for each particle in the last layer has been obtained from etch pit growth curves with multi-stepetching technique. The maximum energy of proton is 14.390.05 MeV. This method allows us to measure the maximum energy of proton precisely, which is obtained up to the hundredth place in unit of MeV in the laser-driven particle acceleration experiment.

In an fcc metal lattice, each metal atom has two tetrahedral (T) and one octahedral (O) sites that can accommodate hydrogen. Rare-earth metal La forms T-site occupied LaH and fully occupied LaH. O-site occupied or NaCl-type monohydride has yet to be reported for rare-earth metals. Previous X-ray diffraction measurements revealed the pressure-induced decomposition of an fcc-LaH into H-rich and H-poor phases around 11 GPa. The present neutron diffraction measurements on LaD confirm the formation of NaCl-type LaD as a counterpart of the D-rich LaD by disproportionation. First-principle calculations demonstrate that the NaCl-type LaH is stabilized at high pressures. Finding the NaCl-type LaH will pave the way for investigations on the site-dependent nature of hydrogen-metal interactions.

Nuclear human resources development (HRD) in Japan has been identified as one of the most important issues these years in nuclear society, mostly due to the decrease of nuclear engineers in industries and students in universities, and to the difficulties of technical transfers. Nuclear Technology and Education Center (NuTEC) at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) aims at comprehensive nuclear education and training activities, which cover (1) education and training for domestic nuclear engineers, (2) cooperation with universities and (3) international cooperation. The main feature of NuTEC's training programs is that the curricula places emphasis on the laboratory exercise with well-equipped training facilities and expertise of lecturers mostly from JAEA. The wide spectrum of cooperative activities have been pursued with universities, which includes newly developed remote-education system, and also with international organizations, such as with FNCA countries and IAEA.

The residual ranges for each particle in the last layer has been obtained from etch pit growth curves with the multi-step etching technique. The maximum energy of proton obtained is 14.390.05 MeV. This method allows us to measure the maximum energy of proton precisely, which is ten times higher than that of the conventional methods.
