The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident released substantial radiocesium into terrestrial environments in 2011. Understanding the sources of dissolved radiocesium and the factors controlling its seasonal variation in stream water is crucial for assessing and mitigating environmental radioactive contamination. From 2015 to 2021, we investigated dissolved
Cs concentrations and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in stream water, spring water, groundwater, litter leachate, soil pore water, and infiltrated water. In the headwater area, dissolved
Cs concentrations increased just after spring compared to the concentrations in the groundwater. During approximately three years of stream water monitoring, dissolved
Cs concentrations correlated with water temperature, concentrations of DOC, and K
. A three-component mixture model revealed that stream water composition is derived mainly from groundwater, leaching from forest litter/surface soil, and soil pore water. The soil pore water particularly influenced summer stream water, likely due to the water table fluctuations with precipitation. The leaching water also influenced the summer stream water compared to the winter stream water. These findings suggest that seasonal variations in dissolved
Cs are driven by temperature-dependent leaching from surface forest litter/soil and increased contributions from soil pore water. This study is the first to identify the sources and seasonal drivers of dissolved
Cs in forested headwater streams.

-XRF). The results identified two forms of cesium: one dissolved in glass and the other enriched on the surfaces of internal voids. The latter is considered to have originally existed as a gas and became concentrated during the cooling and solidification of the molten glass. These findings are crucial for understanding the formation process of CsMPs during the accident, as well as for future decommissioning and safety assessments.

As Au (001) surfaces exhibit a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated structure, Hex-Au(001), its periodicity was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene when graphene was grown on this surface. Furthermore, the hybridization between graphene and Au is known to introduce bandgap and spin polarization into graphene. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. A bandgap of 0.2 eV in the graphene Dirac cone was observed at the crossing point of the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp bands, indicating that the origin of the bandgap formation was the hybridization between the graphene Dirac cone and Au 6sp band. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and anticipated spin injection into the graphene Dirac cone.

When graphene was grown on this surface, the periodicity of the corrugated surface was predicted to change the electronic structure of graphene, forming bandgaps and new Dirac points. Furthermore, the graphene-Au interface is promising for bandgap generation and spin injection due to band hybridization. Here, we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculation of graphene on a Hex-Au(001) surface. The crossing point of the original and replica graphene
bands showed no bandgap, suggesting that the one-dimensional potential was too small to modify the electronic structure. A bandgap of 0.2 eV was observed at the crossing point of the graphene
and Au
bands, indicating that the bandgap is generated using hybridization of the graphene
and Au
bands. We discussed the hybridization mechanism and concluded that the R30 configuration between graphene and Au and an isolated electronic structure of Au are essential for effective hybridization between graphene and Au. We anticipate that hybridization between graphene
and Au
would result in spin injection into graphene.

To achieve beam operation at a repetition rate of 25 Hz at high intensities, the RCS was elaborately designed. After starting the RCS operation, we carefully verified the validity of its design and made certain improvements to establish a reliable operation at higher power as possible. Consequently, we demonstrated beam operation at a high power, namely, 1 MW. We then summarized the design, actual performance, and improvements of the RCS to achieve a 1 MW beam.

In the event of an abnormal situation, a machine protection system (MPS) that immediately inhibits the beam is indispensable to minimize the damage and the radioactivation by beam loss. The existing MPS was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. Then, the system has been working stably for more than ten years. On the other hand, since there are many MPS modules that have been used from the beginning of J-PARC operation, it is important to systematically proceed with updating (replacement) of modules as a measure against aging of MPS. However, the main components of the existing MPS module have been discontinued. Therefore, it is indispensable to redesign the MPS modules in consideration of improvement such as the compatibility with existing modules and the miniaturization. In this paper, the development status of the new module and the update plan of MPS for Linac and RCS are detailed.

Since the accidents at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant following the Tohoku Region Pacific Coast Earthquake on March 11th, 2011, Fukushima Environmental Safety Center has carried out research on natural mobilization of radionuclide (especially radiocesium) and future forecast from forest to water system and surrounding residential areas. The report summarizes the latest results that have been accumulated from each study field, of our agency together with the other related research organizations. The contents of the report is to be used as evidence-based information for the QA-styled pages in the website of JAEA Sector of Fukushima Research and Development at the time of next renewal.

In the J-PARC, a 3 MeV linac has been developed for the tests of beam scraper irradiation and charge exchange by high-power laser. To accomplish tests efficiently and safely, the control system for 3 MeV was designed and developed, and this system consists of four subsystems, personal protection system, machine protection system, timing system, and remote control system using the EPICS. In this paper, the details of control system for a 3 MeV linac are presented.
