Application of virtual tour for online training safeguards exercises

The Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) developed the virtual tour of a reference nuclear facility. The developed virtual tour was applied to the Design Information Questionnaire (DIQ) workshop exercise for the online SSAC course held in November 2020 in connection with the IAEA safeguards-related regional training course. Also, it was applied to the Complementary Access (CA) exercise for the online workshop of the Nuclear Security and Safeguards Project under the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA), held in February 2021. The workshop exercises have been implemented for in-person format however due to COVID-19 pandemic, a virtual tour was applied. The virtual tour was found to be a strong tool not only for online training as an alternative for a facility tour, but also considered to be more advantageous even for the in-person training. The developed virtual tour of a reference nuclear facility, going to shut down, can find potentially varied applications. The paper describes how to create a virtual tour of a reference research reactor facility for the DIQ and CA exercises respectively which have different learning objectives. It emphasizes how the features of the reference facility were captured and the challenges encountered to convey to the training participants the importance of providing the required design information while not being physically present at the facility. It also show the advantage of using the same virtual tour to describe the safeguards-related verification activities of a complementary access. Virtual tours can be applied to a variety of training.

Ultra-high temperature tensile properties of ODS steel claddings under severe accident conditions

Ultra-high temperature ring tensile tests were carried out to investigate the tensile behavior of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) steel claddings and wrapper materials under severe accident conditions; temperatures ranged from room temperature to 1400$$^{circ}$$C which is near the melting point of core materials. The experimental results showed that tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings was highest in the core materials at the ultra-high temperatures between 900 and 1200$$^{circ}$$C, but that there was significant degradation in tensile strength of 9Cr-ODS steel claddings above 1200$$^{circ}$$C. This degradation was attributed to grain boundary sliding deformation with $$gamma$$/$$delta$$ transformation, which was associated with reduced ductility. On the other hand, tensile strength of recrystallized 12Cr-ODS and FeCrAl-ODS steel claddings retained its high value above 1200 $$^{circ}$$C unlike the other tested materials. Present study includes the result of "R&D of ODS ferritic steel fuel cladding for maintaining fuel integrity at the high temperature accident condition" entrusted to Hokkaido University by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT).

Tolerance of fast rector fuel elements to failure in the typical accident conditions was evaluated for the oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel claddings that are candidate of the cladding material for advanced fast reactors. The evaluation was based on the cladding creep damage, which was quantified by the cumulative damage fractions (CDFs). It was shown that the CDFs of the ODS ferritic steel cladding were substantially lower than the breach limit of 1.0 in the loss of flow and transient over power conditions until a passive reactor shutdown system operates.

We investigated the electronic structure of BaFeO$$_{3}$$ by using HAXPES and XAS measurements and first principle studies. The experimental and theoretical results indicated that BaFeO$$_{3}$$ is a negative charge transfer compound. We concluded that the on-site Coulomb energy and the strong hybridization between Fe-3d and O-2p orbitals play a very important role of emergence of negative charge transfer. And we found the new structure in the Fe-2p XPS spectrum and concluded this structure is originated from non-local screening.

Nitride fuels have several advantages, such as high thermal conductivity and high metal density like metallic fuels, and high melting point and isotropic crystal structure like oxide fuels. Since the late 1990s, the partitioning and transmutation of minor actinides (MA) has been studied to decrease the long term radio-toxicity of high level waste and mitigate the burden on the final disposal. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has been proposing dedicated transmutation cycle using the Accelerator-Driven System (ADS) with the nitride fuels containing MA. We have been developing the nitride fuel cycle including pyrochemical process. Our focus is on electrolysis of nitride fuels and refabrication of nitride fuel from the recovered actinides because other processes are similar to the technology for the metal fuel treatment and have been studied elsewhere. In this paper, we summarized our activity on developments of the pyrochemical treatment of the spent nitride fuels.

Protein nanowires exhibiting specific biological activities hold promise for interacting with living cells and controlling and predicting biological responses such as apoptosis, endocytosis and cell adhesion. Here we report the result of the interaction of a single high-energy charged particle with protein molecules. Degradation of the human serum albumin nanowires was examined using trypsin. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires bound avidin, demonstrating the high affinity of the nanowires. Human serum albumin-avidin hybrid nanowires were also fabricated from a solid state mixture and exhibited good mechanical strength. The biotinylated human serum albumin nanowires can be transformed into nanowires exhibiting a biological function such as avidin-biotinyl interactions and peroxidase activity. The present technique is a versatile platform for functionalizing the surface of any protein molecule with an extremely large surface area.

Magnetocaloric effect of field-induced ferromagnet BaFeO$$_{3}$$

We have investigated the magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of a perovskite oxide, BaFeO$$_{3}$$, that shows ferromagnetism by the aid of a small external field of about 0.3 T below the Curie temperature T$$_{C}$$ = 111 K. The magnetization is found to change almost reversibly in both field and temperature cycles. Hence, magnetic and thermal hysteretic losses are negligibly low during refrigeration, a property that is suitable for application. The reversible MCE is likely to arise from the absence of an orbital magnetic moment of Fe ions which are essentially in the Fe$$^{3+}$$L state (L: ligand hole). The magnetic entropy change and refrigerant capacity near the T$$_{C}$$ are about 5.8 J kg$$^{-1}$$ K$$^{-1}$$ and about 172 J kg$$^{-1}$$, respectively, both of which are comparable to those of ferromagnetic perovskite manganites. As BaFeO$$_{3}$$ contains no rare metals and is stable against corrosion, the material can be regarded as a candidate refrigerant material.

The bow wave induced mechanism of high-order harmonics generation was discovered using simulations and catastrophe theory. This mechanism feasibility was successfully demonstrated in 3D and 2D PIC simulations. The mechanism and the simulations explained high-order harmonics in the XUV spectral region seen in recent experiments with terawatt lasers. Development of new XUV light and X-ray source based on the high-order harmonics generation mechanism is proposed.

We demonstrate a new high-order harmonic generation mechanism reaching the "water window" spectral region in experiments with multi-terawatt femtosecond lasers irradiating gas jets. A few hundred harmonic orders are resolved, giving $$mu$$J/sr pulses. Harmonics are collectively emitted by an oscillating electron spike formed at the joint of the boundaries of a cavity and bow wave created by a relativistically self-focusing laser in underdense plasma. The spike sharpness and stability are explained by catastrophe theory. The mechanism is corroborated by particle-in-cell simulations.

Development of the pyrochemical process of spent nitride fuels for ADS; Its elemental technologies and process flow diagram

R&D on the transmutation of long-lived minor actinides (MA) by the accelerator-driven system (ADS) using nitride fuels is underway at Japan Atomic Energy Agency. In regard to reprocessing technology, pyrochemical process has several advantages in case of treating spent fuel with large decay heat and fast neutron emission, and recovering highly enriched N-15. In the pyrochemical reprocessing, plutonium (Pu) and MA are dissolved in LiCl-KCl eutectic melts and selectively recovered into liquid cadmium (Cd) cathode by molten salt electrorefining. The recovered Pu and MA are converted to nitrides by the nitridation-distillation combined method, in which the Cd alloys containing Pu and MA are heated in nitrogen gas stream. The authors have investigated its elemental technologies such as electrorefining and renitridation. On the other hand, development of the process flow diagram with the material balance sheet of the pyrochemical reprocessing of spent nitride fuel for ADS is in progress. This paper summarized recent progress of the study which aims to prove the technological applicability of pyrochemical process to the nitride fuel cycle for transmutation of MA.

Recent progress in blanket materials development in the Broader Approach Activities

As a part of the Broader Approach (BA) activities, the research and development on blanket related materials and tritium technology have been initiated toward DEMO by Japan and EU. Recently, those five R&D items have progressed substantially in Japan and EU. As a preparatory work aiming at the RAFM steel muss-production development, a 5-ton heat of RAFM steel (F82H) was procured with the Electro Slag Re-melting as a secondary melting. The result of the double notch tensile test method for the NITE-SiC$$_{f}$$/SiC specimen indicated notch insensitivity and very minor size effect on proportional limit tensile stress and fracture strength. For the fabrication technology development of beryllide neutron multiplayer pebbles, Be- Ti inter-metallic pebbles have been sintered directly from the mixed powder of Be and Ti in Japan.
