Conditions without the increases in the thermal and particle transport with ECH have been experimentally investigated in positive magnetic shear (PS), weak magnetic shear (WS) and reversed magnetic shear (RS) plasmas with internal transport barriers (ITBs) on JT-60U. The ion heat diffusivity around an internal transport barrier in the ion temperature ($$T_{rm i}$$-ITB) remains constant with ECH when a large negative toroidal rotation shear is formed before the ECH. The condition does not depend on the electron to ion temperature ratio ($$T_{rm e}$$/$$T_{rm i}$$) and ECH power. The electron heat diffusivity around a $$T_{rm e}$$-ITB stays constant with ECH when the magnetic shear is negative around the Te-ITB region. Effective particle transport remains constant or reduces during ECH under the condition of negative magnetic shear.

Physics picture of improving energy confinement with argon seeding at high density has been investigated in JT-60U. Better confinement is sustained at high density by argon seeding accompanied by higher core and pedestal temperatures. Peaked density profiles are kept with argon seeding. Density peaking and dilution effects lower the pedestal density at a given averaged density. The pedestal density in the argon seeded plasmas which is relatively lower than that in a single deuterium puff enables the pedestal temperature to be higher. The density peaking is a key factor of sustaining better confinement in argon seeded H-mode plasmas.

JAEA and RWMC concluded the letter of cooperation agreement on the research and development of radioactive waste disposal in April, 2005, and have been carrying out the collaboration work described above based on the agreement. JAEA have been carrying out the Horonobe URL Project which is intended for a sedimentary rock in the Horonobe town, Hokkaido, since 2001. In the project, geoscientific research and research and development on geological disposal technology are being promoted. Meanwhile, the government (the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) has been promoting construction of equipments for the full-scale demonstration of engineered barrier system and operation technology for high-level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal since 2008, to enhance public's understanding to the geological disposal of HLW, using underground facility, etc. RWMC received an order of the project in fiscal year 2010 continuing since fiscal year 2008. Since topics in this project are included in the Horonobe URL Project, JAEA carried out this project as collaboration work continuing in FY 2008. This report summarizes the results of engineering technology carried out in this collaboration work in fiscal year 2010. In fiscal year 2010, part of the equipments for emplacement of buffer material was produced and a house for the equipments and apparatus was opened in the adjoining land of Public Information House of JAEA Horonobe.

Dependence of heat transport, edge pedestal and confinement on isotopic composition was investigated in conventional H-mode plasmas. Identical profiles for the electron density, electron temperature, and ion temperature were obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas, whereas the required power clearly increased for hydrogen, which resulted in reduction of heat diffusivity for deuterium. The inverse of the ion-temperature-gradient (ITG) scale length which is required for a given ion heat diffusivity increased by a factor of approximately 1.2 for deuterium compared with that for hydrogen.

Dependence of heat transport on isotopic composition is investigated in conventional H-mode plasmas for the application to ITER. The identical profiles of $$n_mathrm{e}$$, $$T_mathrm{e}$$ and $$T_mathrm{i}$$ are obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas while the required power becomes clearly larger for hydrogen, resulting in the reduction of the heat diffusivity for deuterium. The result of the identical temperature profiles in spite of different heating power suggests that the characteristics of heat conduction differs essentially between hydrogen and deuterium even at the same scale length of temperature gradient. On the other hand, the edge stability is improved by increased total $$beta_mathrm{p}$$ regardless of the difference of the isotropic composition.

Effects of local toroidal field (TF) ripple due to test blanket modules (TBMs) for ITER on radial transport of thermal ions are investigated using fully three-dimensional magnetic field orbit following Monte Carlo (F3D-OFMC) code. The simulation under ITER plasma condition indicates that the additional losses caused by the localized TF ripple due to TBMs linearly increase with number of TBMs. When the amplitude of local TF ripple in one TBM port is increased, on the other hand, the additional losses increase quickly. A comparison of the number of lost particles suggests that a condition with three TBM ports corresponds to 1.7 times of ripple amplitude at one TBM port.

In this study, strength recovery, generalized stress relaxation and two tensile strength tests were carried out using shale sampled in the Wakkanai-formation. As the results, by using the value of a suitable constant with the constitutive equation showing strength recovery, it was showed that change of the axial stress in a compacting test could be expressed. About the generalized relaxation, it examined by the air dried and the saturated condition. Visco-elastic behavior was more remarkable in saturated condition than the air dried. Moreover, when the loading rate up to the starting point of the generalized relaxation test was large, the influence on visco-elastic behavior was remarkable. About tensile characteristics, a splitting tensile strength test and a uniaxial tensile strength test were carried out. About splitting tensile strength, it turned out that the influence of the loading direction on a bedding plane is great.

The dependence of the ion temperature gradient scale length on the hydrogen isotope mass was examined in conventional $$H$$-mode plasmas in JT-60U tokamak. While identical profiles for density and temperature were obtained for hydrogen and deuterium plasmas, the ion conductive heat flux necessary for hydrogen to sustain the same thermal stored energy was two times that required for deuterium, resulting in a clearly higher ion heat diffusivity for hydrogen at the same ion temperature gradient scale length. The ion temperature gradient scale length for deuterium is less than that for hydrogen at a given ion heat diffusivity.

Energy confinement properties for hydrogen and deuterium H-mode plasmas were examined in JT-60U. The energy confinement time became larger by a factor of $$sim$$1.2-1.3 for deuterium than for hydrogen at a given $$P_mathrm{L}$$. When the plasma energy was fixed, the profiles of density and temperature became identical for both cases while higher heating power was required for hydrogen. The ion conductive heat flux for hydrogen became approximately two times that for deuterium. Hence, the ion heat diffusivity for hydrogen was higher than for deuterium. It was found that the ion-temperature-gradient scale length became smaller by a factor of $$sim$$1.2 for deuterium than for hydrogen.

Metadata is powerful tool for information organizing. There are two kinds of "keyword" used as the metadata, "free term" and "controlled vocabulary". There is an advantage that metadata creators can freely select the "keyword" by using a free term. However, there is a disadvantage that the retrieval leakage can be caused in information retrieval. On the other hand, the search accuracy can be improved using a controlled vocabulary. However, creating and management of a controlled vocabulary need manpower. In addition, the existing controlled vocabulary is paper, PDF, HTML, hard to use such a format. In this article, proposes to use "controlled vocabulary" as a metadata. We develop and release of JavaScript libraries for using controlled vocabulary as a metadata on the web service user (including PHP script). This JavaScript library supported using 10 thesauri and subject headings. FAST, NDLSH, Wikipedia Thesaurus, INIS Thesaurus, MeSH, and so on. Our final target is to create a mechanism using metadata across web-service, including free term.

Characteristics and control of the Type I edge localized mode in JT-60U

Coherent density and temperature precursors have been observed before the collapse phase of the Type I ELM. The growth rate of the precursor is evaluated to be $$gamma/omega_{it A} sim 10^{-3}$$ for several edge pedestal conditions. From the phase delay between ECE signals measured at two toroidal locations and the frequency of the precursor, the toroidal mode number is evaluated as n = 8-10 or 14-16. It is found that the dominant n varies with each ELM under the same plasma condition. When the ratio of the pressure gradient inside the pedestal to the pressure gradient within the pedestal becomes large, larger reduction of ion temperature as well as wider ELM affected area has been observed. When the plasma near the top of the pedestal on the high-field side is heated by the electron cyclotron wave power of 1.57 MW, the normalized ELM energy loss was reduced by 33 %, together with the increase in the ELM frequency.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) and Radioactive Waste Management Funding and Research Center (RWMC) effect an agreement about research and development of high level radioactive waste (HLW) disposal and carried out research and technological development about geological disposal technology. JAEA has been carried out the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory (URL) Project which is intended for sedimentary rock and the Project includes geoscientific research and geological disposal technology. RWMC carried out an investigation about full-scale demonstration of engineered barrier system (EBS) and operation technology for HLW disposal, under the contract with the Natural Resources and Energy Agency, Ministry of Economy, the Trade and Industry. The investigation aims to obtain the citizens' understanding of the geological disposal. This work includes the full-scale demonstration of operation technology in the Horonobe URL. This joint research is about engineering technology concerned with the work. In 2008 fiscal year (2008/2009), the master plan of the work was made, and a part of the device for transportation of engineered barrier was made, and it has begun the exhibition of full-scale bentonite block and overpack.
