and 10 keV C
were studied. The D permeability was obtained for un-damaged W at various temperatures. For both D
and C
implanted W, the permeability was clearly reduced. But, for the D
implanted W, the permeability was recovered by heating at 1173 K and it was almost consistent with that for un-damaged W. In the case of C
implanted W, the permeability was not recovered even if the sample was heated at 1173 K, indicating that the existence of carbon would prevent the recovery of permeation path in W. In addition, TEM observation showed the voids were grown by heating at 1173 K and not removed, showing the existence of damages would not largely influence on the hydrogen permeation behavior in W in the present study.

. This compound exhibits antiferro-octupole order (AFO) below
= 1.4 K, and it is theoretically suggested that ferroquadrupole moments and a resultant rhombohedral deformation are induced in the AFO phase. We observe the splitting of Bragg reflections below
and find that the unit cell is rhombohedral with the elongated [111] axis. We also precisely evaluate the magnitude of the induced quadrupole moments from the obtained shear strain and find that the quadrupole moments are not reduced in the AFO phase.

have been studied by resonant and nonresonant X-ray diffraction. In the intermediate phase, nonresonant Thomson scattering with
= (1,0,0) is induced by applying a magnetic field. This phenomena is caused by atomic displacements reflecting the charge order in the
band, as predicted theoretically. Simultaneously, the antiferromagnetic moment of Sm is enhanced along the field direction, which is considered to reflect the staggered ordering of the

crystal-field states. The present results show that the orbital-dependent

The research and development plan for geological investigation, engineering technology and safety assessment during the drilling of a shaft down to intermediate depth are summarized according to the Midterm Plan till 2009 Fiscal year of JAEA. This report describes subject, current status and programme in the "Phase 2: Construction phase" (investigations during construction of the underground facilities). Furthermore regarding R&D plan in next Midterm Plan of JAEA, preliminary ideas are summarized.

that exhibits antiferrooctupole (AFO) order below
=1.4K. Ferroquadrupole moments that accompany the AFO order and a resultant rhombohedral deformation of the cubic lattice were theoretically predicted and experimetanlly supported. However, the sign and magnitude of the rhombohedral deformation have not yet been determined. We observe the splitting of Bragg peaks below
, which is consistent with a rhombohedral deformation of 4
elongated along the [111] axis. The response of rhombohedral domains to magnetic fields also well agrees with theoretical calculations. A particular outcome of this experiment is that the magnitude of the induced quadrupole moments is precisely evaluated from the obtained shear strain.
