Study on disposal of waste from reprocessing for commercial HTGR spent fuel

A study on disposal of waste derived from commercial High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor ("HTGR") has been performed. Because of significant difference between the reprocessing of Light Water Reactor ("LWR") and that of HTGR due to difference in structures of the fuel, adoptability of the laws relating to reprocessing waste disposal, which is enacted for LWR, to HTGR waste should be confirmed. Then, we compared the technologies and waste of reprocessing and evaluated radioactivity concentration in graphite waste by activation and contamination based on whole core burn-up calculation. As a result, it was found that SiC residue waste should be disposed of into a geological repository as 2nd class designated radioactive waste in the Designated Radioactive Waste Final Disposal Act (Act No.117 of 2000), by way of amendment of the applicable order, same as hull and end-piece of LWR, and graphite waste should be shallowly disposed of than geological disposal as 2nd class waste for pit disposal in the Act on the Regulation of Nuclear Source Material, Nuclear Fuel Material and Reactors (Act No.166 of 1957) same as a channel box of LWR.

The high-performance computer system Helios which is located at The Computational Simulation Centre (CSC) in The International Fusion Energy Research Centre (IFERC) started its operation in January 2012 under the Broader Approach (BA) agreement between Japan and the EU. The Helios system has been used for magnetised fusion related simulation studies in the EU and Japan and has kept high average usage rate. As a result, the Helios system has contributed to many research products in a wide range of research areas from core plasma physics to reactor material and reactor engineering. This project review gives a short catalogue of domestic simulation research projects. First, we outline the IFERC-CSC project. After that, shown are objectives of the research projects, numerical schemes used in simulation codes, obtained results and necessary computations in future.

Lysine acetylation is one of the most common protein post transcriptional modifications. The acetylation effects of lysine residues on Ku protein were examined herein applying several computer simulation techniques. Acetylation of the lysine residues did not reduce the affinity between Ku and its substrate, DNA, in spite of the fact that the substitution of lysine with glutamine (KQ mutant) reduced the affinity of Ku for DNA, or the substitution of lysine with arginine (KR mutant) did not reduce it, as previously reported in experimental studies. These results suggest that the effects of in vivo acetylation may be overestimated when the KQ mutant is employed in mimicry of the acetylated protein.

Report of Radiation Exposure Control on the 13th Annual Inspection at the Experimental Fast Reactor JOYO

The 13th annual inspection at the experimental fast reactor JOYO had been executed from June 1, 2000 to November 27, 2003. While this inspection,in addition to the regular maintenance and repair, some countermeasure works based on safety overhaul and works relevant to the heat transport system modification for upgrading the irradiation performance (MK-III modfication) in the under floor of reactor building were implemented. Duration of the inspection was about 3.5 years, longer than past inspections. While the inspection, the replacement of the internal heat exchanger (IHX) A, B, in primary coolant system, and relevant pipes was considered important in radiation control. The point of radiation control of this work was external exposure to workers.The expectation of exposure dose in the annual inspection and the MK-III modification were made for every work subject in consideration of procedure, number of workers, period and place of the work. The expectation of total exposure in the annual inspection, summed up the yearly expectation from 2000 to 2003, was 1156 man-mSv. While In the MK-III modification from June 1, 2000 to November 30, 2002, the expectation of total exposure was 7135 man-mSv. Furthermore, all the while in the MK-III modification, We call for work end department that workers exposure was as low as practical. As a result, total exposure was 633 man-mSv in the annual inspection, and 2386 man-mSv in the MK-III modification. Both of total result exposure was about 30-50% of the expectation, and every worker's exposure were controlled under the criteria of exposure control. Finally, the works in the 13th annuall inspection was properly executed.
