Decontamination tests were carried out using both simulated contaminated samples and pipe specimens cut from the primary coolant system of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor. In the case of surface oxide layer consisting mainly of iron oxide, more than 99% of surface radioactivities were removed after two to three decontamination runs. In order to ascertain the role of laser irradiation on chemical reactions, chemical states of O and Fe in the oxide layer before and after decontamination were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the oxide layer was dissolved into the acid-containing gel, and the reaction was extensively promoted by the laser irradiation.

Large-scale melting tests of simulated miscellaneous solid wastes were conducted to characterize solidified products (50L-drum size). Two heating modes were adopted in the tests: hybrid heating and induction heating modes. In the former, wastes were heated with both an induction furnace and a plasma torch, and in the latter, an electrically-conductive crucible was used with the induction furnace. Visual observation, chemical analysis and radioactivity measurements were conducted to the solidified products. It was found that the radioisotope distribution of solidified products was almost homogeneous. There was no remarkable deterioration in the solidified products subsequent to the leaching test.

Effects of operating conditions such as an abrasive concentration and a flow rate of air-stream on erosion ability was examined. Erosion depths of the test pipes were approximately proportional to the concentration of abrasives and exponent of flow rate of air-stream. The experimental results indicated that the present method could keep satisfactory erosion ability of abrasives even for a large size pipe. The present method was successfully applied to Co-contaminated specimens sampled from a pipe of the water clean-up system of the Japan Power Demonstration Reactor.

Based on the assumption that the absorption of laser light follows the Lambert-Beer law, ablation parameters, such as absorption length and threshold fluence for ablation, of sintered FeO and stainless and carbon steels were measured in He, O, Kr or SF atmosphere. The results indicated that SF was the most effective gas of all irradiation atmospheres studied for the exclusive removal of oxide layers formed on stainless and carbon steel samples in high temperature pressurized water. Secondary ion mass spectroscopic measurement and scanning electron microscopic observation confirmed that no oxide layer existed on the steel samples after the exclusive removal with laser irradiation.
