The graded energy deposition of heavy ion beam irradiation to polymeric materials was utilized to synthesize a novel proton exchange membrane (PEM) with the graded density of sulfonic acid groups toward the thickness direction. Stacked Poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (FEP) films were irradiated by Xe$$^{54+}$$ ion beam with the energy of 6 MeV/u under a vacuum condition. Irradiated films were grafted with styrene monomer and then sulfonated. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) fabricated by the function graded PEM showed improved fuel cell performance in terms of voltage stability. It was expected that the function-graded PEM could control the graded concentration of sulfonic acid groups in PEM.

Combinational effect of charged particle irradiation and alkaline pretreatment on hydriding property of a Mm-Ni based alloy

We investigated combinational effects of electron/ion beam irradiation and KOH alkaline pretreatment on initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate of Mm-Ni based alloy. In previous studies, we have reported that the alkaline pretreatment of the alloy surface using LiOH, NaON or KOH accelerates the rate of the initial activation. For the surface modification of materials, an electron/ion beam irradiation is well known to produce a high density of vacancy type defects in materials and to be a quite useful method. These facts give the possibility that the hydrogen absorptivity in Mm-Ni based alloy is improved by the surface modification on using an electron/ion beam irradiations. In this study, we performed electron (e$$^{-}$$) and proton ion (H$$^{+}$$) beam irradiation into MmNi$$_{3.48}$$Co$$_{0.73}$$Mn$$_{0.45}$$Al$$_{0.34}$$ (Mm = La$$_{0.35}$$Ce$$_{0.65}$$) at TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application), JAEA. For the electrochemical measurements of the initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate, either un-irraddiated or e$$^{-}$$/H$$^{+}$$ beam irradiated MmNi$$_{3.48}$$Co$$_{0.73}$$Mn$$_{0.45}$$Al$$_{0.34}$$ was used as an anode. The hydrogen absorption rate of these samples with both 6M-KOH pretreatment and un-treatment was evaluated. Based on the obtained results, we discuss the correlation among e$$^{-}$$/H$$^{+}$$ beam irradiation, alkaline pretreatment and initial hydrogen absorption rate in Mm-Ni based alloy.

Effect of electron irradiation on the property of electrochemical hydrogen absorption by a Mm-Ni based alloy

In this study, we examined the effect of electron irradiation on the surface of a hydrogen storage alloy in order to improve the initial activation. We measured the initial rate of hydrogen absorption in an electrochemical process, and found that the electron irradiation treatment in the atmosphere is more effective than that in the vacuum or helium gas. Based on results of surface analysis of the alloy by ESCA, we found the existence of non-stoichiometric oxides of rare earths. As well known, non-stoichiometric rare earth oxides such as CeO$$_{x}$$ and LaO$$_{x}$$ has a high ability to dissociate covalent molecules like H$$_{2}$$O. This paper demonstrates an effective surface treatment of electron irradiation, and the important catalytic actions of rare earth oxides in the surface to improve the initial activation of the alloy.

The relationship between the amount of radionuclide to be solidified and the solidified body temperature was analyzed, when solidify contaminated water management waste at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station with cement etc. at low temperature. The analysis code used the radiation transport code and the thermal analysis code. Thus, the limit value by radionuclide concentration during solidification process are evaluated. The summary of the test and some of the obtained results are introduced.
