Focusing on the cover layer materials (as the Radon Barrier Materials), which could have the effect to restrain the radon from scattering into the air and the effect of the radiation shielding, we produced the radon barrier materials with crude bentonite on an experimental basis, using the rotary type comprehensive unit for grinding and mixing, through which we carried out the evaluation of the characteristics thereof.

JNC-TN9400-2003-061.pdf:6.97MB

This report is intended to explain the outline of the scenario studies on FBR (Fast Breeder Reactor) cycle introduction. Recently, people value the reduction of environmental impact in addition to the recycle of energy resources and the energy security in these scenario studies. This report summarizes the analysis about the necessity of plutonium recycling in LWR (Light Water Reactor) from short-term view and about the necessity of FBR cycle introduction from a long-term view in Japan, by comparing "FBR scenario" with "LWR once-through scenario" and "Pu recycle in LWR scenario", from the viewpoints of cumulative uranium demand, spent fuel storage, radioactive waste arising, etc. It becomes clear that the plutonium recycling in LWR has a good effect on the reduction of spent fuel storage and the cumulative natural uranium demand before FBR cycle introduction, from short-term view (20 - 30 years). On the other hand, this analysis also shows that there is much effect of FBR deployment not only on saving amount of uranium use and energy security but also on reduction of high-level radioactive waste (spent fuels and vitrified waste) and minor actinide arising, from long-term view (100 - 200 years).

Scenario study on fast reactor cycle deployment

Ono, Kiyoshi; Shiotani, Hiroki; Hirao, Kazunori

Proceedings of International Conference on Advanced Nuclear Energy and Fuel Cycle Systems (GLOBAL 2003) (CD-ROM), 0 Pages, 2003/00

JNC started the feasibility study on commercialized Fast Reactor (FR) cycle system in 1999 and is estimating several promising FR cycle concepts. This report summarizes the analysis about the necessity of FR cycle deployment in Japan and in the world from a long-term viewpoint, by comparing "FR scenari" with "LWR once-through scenario" and "Pu recycling in LWR scenario". The necessity of FR cycle deployment in Japan and in the world was confirmed from viewpoints of effective utilization of uranium resource and reduction of environmental impact.

Scenario study on FBR cycle deployment

Ono, Kiyoshi; Hirao, Kazunori; Ikegami, Tetsuo

Abstracts P37-38, p.37 - 38, 1999/12

Successful introduction scenarios into the practical application of FBR cycle have been investigated taking into account not only a domestic view point but also a worldwide view point. Considerations are paid on the discrimination between the influence factors that lead to the nuclear power introduction and those that lead to the FBR cycle introduction. The economic competitiveness is one of the most important factors along with the limitation for the CO$$_{2}$$ release. Five major scenarios have been induced on view points of economy, reduction of radioactive waste, utilization of small scale FBRs, and Iimitation of uranium resource.

The sturctural materials of the experimental fast reactor, "JOYO", must maintain sufficient mechanical strength during the entire reactor plant lifetime. In JOYO, the material surveillance for reactor structureal components, safety vessel, primary cooling system piping, secondary cooling system piping and tank have been planned to confirem the design integrity of these structures. The material surveillance speciments have been loaded in the reactor plant and they will be periodically taken out and examined during plant life to monitor any changes in mechanical properites. This report summarizes the material surveillance program of JOYO.

no journal, ,

GIF Economic Modeling Working Group (EMWG) is developing the G4-ECONS code for economic study of the generation IV nuclear systems. In this paper, we would like to introduce the outline of the total system cost analysis for Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) sodium cooled fast reactor (JSFR) and its fuel cycle, as an application sample of the G4-ECONS bottom-up approach, and the results of the comparison of it with JAEA original cost estimation using our own calculation model (FCC-EX code). The result of comparison between the electricity generation cost calculated by G4-ECONS code and FCC-EX code demonstrated the validity of calculation function of the G4-ECONS code.
