Successful BNCT for patients with cutaneous and mucosal melanomas; Report of 4 cases

Morita, Norimasa*; Hiratsuka, Junichi*; Kuwabara, Chiaki*; Aihara, Teruhito*; Ono, Koji*; Fukuda, Hiroshi*; Kumada, Hiroaki; Harada, Tamotsu*; Imajo, Yoshinari*

Proceedings of 12th International Congress on Neutron Capture Therapy (ICNCT-12), p.18 - 20, 2006/12

Since 2003, group of Kawasaki Medical School has conducted BNCT clinical trials on melanomas at the Kyoto University Research Reactor (KUR) and Japan Research Reactor No.4 (JRR-4). We report 4 patients given BNCT for malignant melanomas, 2 with superficial spreading types on the heel, 1 with mucosal melanoma in the nasal cavity, and 1with a melanoma on the vulva and in the vagina. Although 2 patients experienced normal-tissue damage that exceeded the tolerance level, all the participants were cured within a few months of treatment. BNCT was shown to be a promising treatment for mucosal, as well as for cutaneous, melanomas.

The suspended fine particles formed in aqueous phenol solution under high dose irradiation were studied using the MeV electron beam and $$^{60}$$Co $$gamma$$-ray irradiations. The fine particle's size was 100-800 nm in diameter and became bigger at higher dose and lower dose rate. The distributions of the particle size became narrower for irradiation at higher dose rate. The fine particles were regarded to consist of molecules of about 1.9$$times$$10$$^{2}$$ molecular weight.

Decomposition of ${it p}$-Nonylphenols (NPs) in water at 1 $$mu$$mol dm$$^{-3}$$ was decreased exponentially with absorbed dose when NPs were irradiated by $$^{60}$$Co$$gamma$$-rays. Two products having molecular weight of 236, presumably OH adducts of NPs, were detected by LC-MS analyses. The elimination of estrogen activity of aqueous NPs solution including such irradiation products at 5000 Gy (J kg$$^{-1}$$) was confirmed by the yeast two hybrid assay. These results should expand the application of ionizing radiation to the treatment of NPs.

JAERI-Tech 2001-070, 33 Pages, 2001/11

JAERI-Tech-2001-070.pdf:3.02MB

In order to improve the gas injection valve used for the operation of JT-60, a new type of valve (multilayer piezoelectric actuator valve) was developed .The conventional valve (bimorph piezoelectric actuator valve) has been used for 15 years from the beginning of experimental operation in April, 1985. Consequently, it came to be hard to keep the performance of the valve as a gas injector because its driving source, piezoelectric element, has deteriorated by long time use.In the design, it is required:(1) to be hard structure for sheet leak,(2) to allow a repair work at atmosphere side without an air vent of the vacuumvessel,(3) to be more smaller and lighter compaired with the conventional one,(4) to have a high maintenance efficiency. The new valve developed was examined with various tests such as gas flow characteristic test, high magnetic field proof test, high temperature proof test and gas flow rate test for aged deterioration. As a result, the valve with desired performance for JT-60 could be obtained.
