An Unreported precipitate orientation relationship in Al-Zn-Mg based alloys

Characterization of precipitates in Al-Zn-Mg alloys, using a combination of electron diffraction, bright field transmission electron microscopy and atomic scale scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging revealed the presence of an unreported $$eta$$$$_{13}$$ orientation relationship between the $$eta$$-MgZn$$_2$$ phase and the Al lattice with the following orientation relationship (0001)$$eta$$ $$||$$ (120)$$_{rm Al}$$ and ($$2bar{1}bar{1}0$$)$$eta$$ $$||$$ (001)$$_{rm Al}$$, plate on (120)$$_{rm Al}$$. The precipitate interfaces were observed and analyzed along two projections 90$$^{circ}$$ to one-another. The precipitate coarsening was through the common thickening ledge mechanism. The ledges were significantly stepped along one lateral direction. An interface relaxation model using density functional theory was carried out to explain the precipitate behavior.

The Fourth Collaborative Material Exercise (CMX-4) of the Nuclear Forensics International Technical Working Group (ITWG) registered the largest participation for this exercise in nuclear forensics, with seven of the 17 laboratories participating for the first time. In this paper, participants from five of the first-time laboratories shared their individual experience in this exercise, from preparation to analysis of samples. The exercise proved to be highly useful for testing procedures, repurposing established methods, exercising skills, and improving the understanding of nuclear forensic signatures and their interpretation trough the post-exercise review meeting.

Frustrated magnetic materials can remain disordered to the lowest temperatures. Such is the case for Ba$$_3$$CuSb$$_2$$O$$_9$$, which is magnetically anisotropic at the atomic scale but curiously isotropic on mesoscopic length and time scales. We find that the frustration on the triangular lattice is imprinted in a nanostructured honeycomb lattice of Cu$$^{2+}$$ ions that resists a coherent static Jahn-Teller distortion. The resulting two-dimensional random-bond spin-1/2 system on the honeycomb lattice has a broad spectrum of spin-dimer like excitations and low-energy spin degrees of freedom that retain.
