Here, the chemical state of Fe ions in black lacquer was investigated by using X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), and Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Fe(II) or Fe(III) was added to the lacquer paste to prepare black lacquer films by air drying, heating, or UV irradiation. The XANES spectral features of all the film samples were similar, meaning that the Fe ions in the samples existed in the trivalent state regardless of the oxidation state of the initially added Fe. The corresponding Fourier transforms of the EXAFS spectra around the Fe K-edge were used to investigate Fe sites in the lacquer films. The spectra of all the film samples were similar shapes, but the peak intensities decreased in the order air dried
heated
UV irradiated films. This result indicates that heating and UV irradiation made the coordination structure of Fe in the lacquer non-uniform, and that heating caused the greatest non-uniformity. The complementary use of XANES, XAFS, and FT-IR spectroscopy is highly effective for non-destructive analysis of black lacquer in precious cultural artifacts.

Main PID control constants of the HTTR are selected with reasonably damped characteristics and without undershoot or overshoot. For utilization the HTGR as a commercial reactor, it should be demonstrated that the HTGR system can supply stable heat to a heat utilization system for the long-term operation. The control characteristics in the long-term high-temperature operation are evaluated by the result of operation performed in 2010. In addition, from a viewpoint of HTGRs with heat utilization system, a future possibility of the experiments for heat utilization design is examined.

The ion temperature reduces with ECH after the increase in the electron temperature where an increase in the ion heat transport with ECH accompanies an increase in the electron thermal transport. The core electron density decreases with ECH when the density profile is peaked before ECH injection. The counter intrinsic rotation with ECH is identified using H-mode plasmas with small torque input (BAL-NBI). The counter intrinsic rotation is generated after the increase in the electron temperature and correlates with the change in the electron temperature with ECH around the EC deposition. Time scale of the change in the toroidal rotation velocity is about 90-200 ms around the ECH deposition and the time scale is longer compared to those in

Chemical reactions induced by ion irradiation in adsorbed molecules is of great importance because these reactions ordinary occur on planetary icy surfaces. In this study, we have investigated the formation of positive ions and neutral molecules from adsorbed methane, deuterated methane, nitrogen and argon following keV He
ion irradiation. In the case of mono-layered methane, only monomer ions (CHx
) were desorbed by 1 keV He
ion irradiation. On the other hand, a large number of acetylene ions(C
H
) and ethylene ions(C
H
) as well as cluster ions (CnHx
) were desorbed from multi-layered film which indicates that chemical bonds are newly formed by ion irradiation. In order to clarify the mechanism for the formation of molecular ions, we calculated ranges and energy loss processes of He
ions in solid methane with Monte-Carlo simulation. Based on the results for the thickness dependences of the mass spectral patterns, it was elucidated that the monomer ions are desorbed from the top surface layer through single electron excitation. While the molecular ions are formed mainly in the inside of the layers along the nuclear track due to the high-density electronic excitation, which is produced by nuclear collision between incident He
ions and frozen molecules.

In this study, the temporal and spatial responses of electron channels and ion channels to central electron cyclotron heating (ECH) have been investigated in positive shear H-mode plasmas and weak shear plasmas with internal transport barriers (ITBs) on JT-60U. The flattening of ne profile is observed after the increase in Te in the core region. Linear gyrokinetic stability analyses predict that the growth rate of the trapped electron modes, which increase outward particle flux, becomes more pronounced during ECH. Ion temperature around the ITB foot rapidly reduces and the increase in Te precedes the reduction in Ti. From the observations and theoretical analyses, the reduced Ti can be interpreted as the decrease in the critical temperature gradient for the ion temperature gradient mode with ECH. The counter intrinsic rotation with ECH is identified on H-mode plasmas with small torque input where co-current NBs and counter-current NBs are simultaneously injected with the same power.

We have investigated the pressure-induced phase separation in rare-earth metal dihydrides by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction experiments. Rare-earth metal hydrides exhibit the stoichiometoric dihydride and trihydride. The dihydride is a metallic while trihydride is an insulator. Recently, we have found the pressure induced phase separation in the lanthanum dihydride. This phenomenon is understood as the decomposition into the hydrogen-poor and rich phases under high pressure. However, the hydrogen occupancy and position have been unclear yet. Our neutron diffraction experiments have revealed that an NaCl-type mono-deuteride is formed as a counterpart of the deuterium-rich phase.

Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements have revealed that LaD
undergoes phase separation at high pressure with the relocation of deuterium atoms in the interstitial sites of La metal lattice. Synchrotron X-ray and neutron experiments were made at BL22XU, SPring-8 and a total scattering device, NOVA, J-PARC. Deuterium atoms, which occupy the tetrahedral sites of the fcc metal lattice in LaD
, move into the empty octahedral sites at 11 GPa to form LaD and LaD
both having fcc metal lattices. Mono-hydride with an NaCl structure, which is common for mono-hydrides of transition metals, is formed in rare-earth metals for the first time. The first-principle calculations showed that LaH
is stable at low pressure and it undergoes a phase separation into LaH and LaH
at 10 GPa, which is excellent agreement with the experimental results.

than LaH
explains the phase separation phenomena. Lattice dynamics calculations on these lanthanum hydrides shed light on the detailed mechanism.

Formation of an NaCl-type mono-deuteride LaD has been found by neutron diffraction experiments at high pressure. The NaCl-type structure has been reported for alkaline hydrides and transition metal hydrides, but not for rare-earth metal hydrides. The NaCl-type mono-hydride is formed in rare-earth metals for the first time. Lanthanum mono-deuteride is formed as a result of the phase separation of the di-deuteride under high pressure. This result suggests that the three different hydrides, mono-, di-, and tri-hydrides, with the fcc metal lattice are realized. The hydrogen atoms occupy only O-sites, only T-sites and both O-sites and T-sites in the mono-, di-, and tri-hydrides, respectively. Hence, it is expected that the H-M bonding nature is different for each hydride.

Rare-earth metal La forms T-site occupied fcc-LaH
and fully occupied fcc-LaH
, the former is metallic and the latter is insulating. Our previous synchrotron X-ray and infrared measurements revealed that the dihydride decomposed into hydrogen-rich and hydrogen-poor phases upon compression to 11 GPa at ambient temperature; the hydrogen rich phase was identified as LaH
but the hydrogen composition and occupation sites of the hydrogen-poor phase remained undetermined. The crystal structure of the hydrogen-poor phase was investigated for LaD
by neutron diffraction measurement with a total diffractometer NOVA at J-PARC. The formation of NaCl-type LaD as a counterpart of LaD
by the decomposition was confirmed from the diffraction profiles. First-principle enthalpy and lattice dynamic calculations have demonstrated that the NaCl-type LaH is stabilized at high pressures.
