Thermally altered subsurface material of asteroid (162173) Ryugu

Here we report observations of Ryugu's subsurface material by the Near-Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. Reflectance spectra of excavated material exhibit a hydroxyl (OH) absorption feature that is slightly stronger and peak-shifted compared with that observed for the surface, indicating that space weathering and/or radiative heating have caused subtle spectral changes in the uppermost surface. However, the strength and shape of the OH feature still suggests that the subsurface material experienced heating above 300 $$^{circ}$$C, similar to the surface. In contrast, thermophysical modeling indicates that radiative heating does not increase the temperature above 200 $$^{circ}$$C at the estimated excavation depth of 1 m, even if the semimajor axis is reduced to 0.344 au. This supports the hypothesis that primary thermal alteration occurred due to radiogenic and/or impact heating on Ryugu's parent body.

The near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, the target of Hayabusa2 sample return mission, is believed to be a primitive carbonaceous object. The Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRS3) on Hayabusa2 acquired reflectance spectra of Ryugu's surface to provide direct measurements of the surface composition and geological context for the returned samples. A weak, narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micron was detected across the entire observed surface, indicating that hydroxyl (OH)-bearing minerals are ubiquitous there. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are similar to thermally- and/or shock-metamorphosed carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. There are few variations in the OH-band position, consistent with Ryugu being a compositionally homogeneous rubble-pile object generated from impact fragments of an undifferentiated aqueously altered parent body.

Electron attachment dynamics to the guanine-cytosine (G-C) base pair in the gas phase isstudied using DFT and molecular dynamics. The potential energy surface of the G-C anion isconstructed with the empirical-valence-bond method using force-field information obtained from long-range corrected DFT calculations. Ring-polymer molecular dynamics simulations predict that theinitial dipole-bound anion readily converts into the valence-bound anion within 0.1 ps and proton-transfer occurs subsequently within 10 ps. The same process was found in classical simulations, buton a much slower time scale. This result suggests that nuclear quantum effects are important inunderstanding DNA damage by low-energy electrons.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

The Negative-ion based Neutral Beam Injection System (N-NBI) for JT-60U has been operating for plasma heating and non-inductive current drive since 1996. The target is inject of neutral beam into plasma with beam energy 500 keV, injection power 10 MW, for 10 seconds. Until now pulse duration time was restricted up to 5.3 seconds because of larger heat load of port limiter. Recently from the measurement of beam profile at 3.5m downstream from the ion source, it was found that the outermost beamlets in each segment were deflected outward. It was caused by non-uniform electric field by grooves. By improving this, outermost beamlet deflection angle was decreased from 14 mrad to 4 mrad. In this result, 10 seconds injection, which is target parameter, has achieved at 355 keV, 2.6MW, while pulse length was restricted up to 5.3 seconds by larger heat load of port limiter.

Measurement and calculation analysis of shielding material's performance for MOX containing americium

$$^{241}$$Am is generated by beta-decay of $$^{241}$$Pu. In the case of treating MOX, it is important for shielding about 60keV gamma-ray emitted by $$^{241}$$Am. Also getting dose rate data of MOX containing $$^{241}$$Am is valuable. In this work, we measured gamma-ray dose rate from MOX containing $$^{241}$$Am by changing thickness of shielding materials and range between MOX and measuring instruments. Also we confirmed that calculating analysis is useful for evaluation of shielding material's performance.

JAXA spacecraft and sample return mission Hayabusa2 has arrived at the near-Earth asteroid 162173 Ryugu, which is classified a primitive carbonaceous object. Here we report recent results of near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS3) on the Hayabusa2 spacecraft. The observations provide direct measurements of the surface composition of Ryugu and context for the returned samples. NIRS3 has detected a weak and narrow absorption feature centered at 2.72 micrometer across entire observed surface. This absorption feature is attributed to the presence of OH-bearing minerals. The NIRS3 observations also revealed that Ryugu is the darkest object to be observed up-close by a visiting spacecraft. The intensity of the OH feature and low albedo are consistent with thermally-and/or shock-metamorphosed, and/or carbon-rich space-weathered primitive and hydrated carbonaceous chondrites.
