It was a great contribution of Dr. Efrem Sh. Soukhovitsukii who has developed an excellent computation scheme which takes account of the low-lying collective nuclear structure in terms of the soft-rotator + vibrational model, and integrated it into the coupled-channels calculation. In Japan, we had a fortuitous experience with him in parametrization of the optical model potential (OMP) and to employ this methodology in nuclear data evaluation for JENDL. Firstly, we summarize our collaborative works with him in this paper. Secondly, let us have a discussion on a new parameterization of OMP which we obtained for light nuclei within his framework, quite recently. It was found that values of the potential parameters themselves are rather similar among different nuclei while the nuclear deformation describes one of the main characteristics of each isotopes.

The mesospheric ionization signature reached below 70 km altitude and continued for ~15 min until the substorm onset, as observed by the PANSY radar and imaging riometer at Syowa Station in the Antarctic region. We also used energetic electron flux observed by the Arase and POES 15 satellites as the input for the air-shower simulation code PHITS to quantitatively estimate the mesospheric ionization rate. Combining the cutting-edge observations and simulations, we shed new light on the space weather impact of the EEP events during geomagnetically quiet times, which is important to understand the possible link between the space environment and climate.

Background: In Japan, new regulations that revise the dose limit for the lens of the eye (the lens), operational quantities, and measurement positions for the lens dose were enforced in April 2021. Based on the international safety standards, national guidelines, the results of the Radiation Safety Research Promotion Fund of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority, and other studies, the Working Group of Radiation Protection Standardization Committee, the Japan Health Physics Society (JHPS) developed a guideline for radiation dose monitoring for the lens. Materials and Methods: The Working Group of the JHPS discussed the criteria of non-uniform exposure and the management criteria set to not exceed the dose limit for the lens. Results and Discussion: In July 2020, the JHPS guideline was published. The guideline consists of three parts: main text, explanations, and 26 questions. In the questions, the corresponding answers were prepared, and specific examples were provided to enable similar cases to be addressed. Conclusion: With the development of guideline on radiation dose monitoring of the lens, radiation managers and workers will be able to smoothly comply with revised regulations and optimise radiation protection.

A compact Nuclear Resonance Transmission Analysis (NRTA) system using a Laser Driven Neutron Source (LDNS) has been developed as a part of the development of nuclear non-proliferation technology supported by the MEXT. In NRTA, the neutron energy emitted from a pulsed neutron source is measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) method. LDNS is of interest because of its short pulse width, which is necessary for accurate TOF measurements over short flight distances. In the short-distance TOF measurement, there will be a large gamma-ray background event due to the coincidence of the timing of the arrival of 2.2 MeV gamma-rays due to neutron capture on hydrogen in the moderator and the timing of the arrival of neutrons around the resonance energy. Since the LDNS is still under development, the neutron flux is not sufficient and it is desirable to use a detector with high detection efficiency. For these reasons, we have developed a detector with low efficiency to gamma-rays and high efficiency to neutrons (multilayer neutron detector). As one of the results of this year's experiments, we confirmed that the multilayer neutron detector have low sensitivity to gamma-rays.

A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle transport code PHITS suggested that significant ionization is possible in the middle atmosphere due to auroral X-rays from the auroral electrons of 10 keV.

In the J-PARC linac, a proton accelerator is operated using 45 units of 324 MHz and 972 MHz klystrons. In the future stabilization and advancement of the accelerator, it is important to acquire the klystron output characteristics near the maximum output accurately. In order to understand this characteristics, measurement of the characteristics of the replaced klystron for some reason such as discharge, as well as the new klystron. However, such measurements have not been performed because of the risk of damage including peripheral equipment due to discharge and the temporal interference with the operation of the accelerator. Therefore, we set up a klystron test stand in the linac building and measured the high-voltage characteristics and input/output characteristics of the klystron under various operating parameters. By using this measurement result, the characteristics of klystron can be obtained before installation, and it becomes possible to determine the optimum operation parameters and make effective plan of klystron replacements. In addition, basic data for predicting the degradation tendency of klystron was acquired by comparing the characteristics of the used and used klystron.

This multi-laboratory pilot project, coordinated via the OECD/NEA Working Party on Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC) Subgroup 40 with support also from the IAEA, has motivated experimental and theoretical work and led to suites of new evaluated libraries that accurately reflect measured data and also perform well in integral simulations of criticality. This report summarizes our results and outlines plans for the next phase of this collaboration.

The nuclear data is the data on the reaction probability between the neutron and the nuclide in a narrow sense. However generally speaking, it is the data describing the physical change of the nuclide and the status of the nuclear ration. Since Japan had started the nuclear energy development, the nuclear data has been one of the most important technical development theme. Now, the nuclear data library of Japan, i.e., JENDL, is well recognized internationally because of the highest-accuracy and fully-furnished types of the included data. This serial lecture describes the significance and the status of the nuclear data development, the international trend, and the direction of the future development.
