Beam profile monitor for intense, negative, hydrogen-ion beams in the J-PARC linac

The beam loss should become more serious when the beam output power increased. We developed a sensitive wire scanner monitor (WSM) to measure the transverse RMS size of negative hydrogen beam for the transverse matching between the quadrupole magnets. Although the dynamic range of 10 is sufficient to evaluate the RMS beam size, we set the goal of the dynamic range to be 10 because we intended to observe the beam halo at the same time. We achieved a dynamic range over 10 by selecting a proper combination of wire materials and diameters based on a consideration on the interaction between the beam and the wire. This enabled us to measure the evolutions of beam halo in the linac. We discuss the mechanism of such a wide dynamic range compared with that of WSMs for proton beams.
