The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

In order to understand corrosion behavior of stainless steel in BWR reactor water conditions, characteristics of oxide films on stainless steel specimens exposed to H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ and O$$_{2}$$ in high temperature water were determined by multilateral surface analyses. The following points were experimentally confirmed. (1) Oxide layers were divided into inner and outer layers: Outer layers of the specimen exposed to 100ppb H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ consisted of larger corundum type hematite particles, while inner layersconsisted of very fine Ni rich spinel type magnetite. (2) Outer oxide layers consisted of oxide particles, whose density and size were changed by oxidant concentration. The average diameter decreased with [O$$_{2}$$] and [H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$]. (3) A larger dissolution rate at higher [H$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$] resulted in a thinner oxide film with smaller particles.
