NH$$_4$$Iのサイクル疲労およびバロカロリック応答は、最大100MPaの応力を伴う加圧・減圧サイクル下で直接評価され、100サイクルの後に断熱温度変化($$Delta T_{mathrm{ad}}$$)は15Kから約0.8Kまで減少した。emphその場X線回折、ラマン分光法、および中性子回折を併用した解析により、最初の荷重除去後であっても残留高圧相が存在することが明らかになり、その割合は100サイクル目までに急速に90%まで増加した。この疲労挙動を解明するために現象論的モデルが構築され、実験データとの良好な一致が得られた。粒界応力を緩和し、結晶粒の移動性を高めるため、NH$$_4$$I粒子とシリコーンオイルからなる複合体を、3Dプリントされたポリマーシェルに封入した。このような構造設計により、バロカロリック効果のサイクル安定性が著しく向上し、100サイクル後でも$$Delta T_{mathrm{ad}}$$は約4.6Kまで上昇した。我々の結果は、気圧熱効果の疲労挙動に関する基礎的な理解を確立するとともに、実用的な気圧熱冷却技術への実現可能な道筋を示すものである。

過去40年間にわたり、液体の水を対象としたモンテカルロ飛跡構造(MCTS)コードが世界中で数多く開発されてきたが、相互作用断面積は大きく異なる。本研究では、6種類の異なるMCTSコードの使用による、液相水中の低エネルギー電子輸送の物理的特性(電子阻止能、経路長、dose-point-kernel、微視的線量付与)の不確実性を評価することを目指した。コード間比較の結果により、特に100eV以下の低エネルギー領域において、MCTSコード間で大きな差異があることが明らかになり、電子線が重要な役割を果たすDNA損傷シミュレーションの精度に影響を与えることが示された。本研究は、液相水中の低エネルギー電子輸送計算に伴う不確実性を低減するために、MCTSコードで使用される物理モデルの更なる開発の必要性を浮き彫りにしている。

Magnetic signature of chiral phonons revealed by neutron spectroscopy in ferrimagnetic Fe$$_{1.75}$$Zn$$_{0.25}$$Mo$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$

Lattice vibrations can carry angular momentum and magnetic moments under broken inversion or time-reversal symmetry, forming so-called chiral phonons. While such excitations have been explored in nonmagnetic systems via optical probes, their direct detection in magnetic materials and coupling to spin excitations remain largely unexplored. Here, using neutron spectroscopy, sensitive to both nuclear and magnetic scattering, we reveal the magnetic signature of chiral phonons in ferrimagnetic Fe$$_{1.75}$$Zn$$_{0.25}$$Mo$$_{3}$$O$$_{8}$$ with Curie temperature $$T_C sim 49$$ K. Below $$T_C$$, we observe enhanced magnetic scattering of phonons at small momenta, arising from strong magnon-phonon coupling. In addition, out-of-plane intensity modulation, phonon mode splitting, and field-induced Zeeman shifts are observed, all closely associated with the ferrimagnetic order. These features vanish above $$T_C$$, where phonon spectra are dominated by nuclear scattering. These observations demonstrate the existence of chiral phonons carrying substantial magnetic moments that directly contribute to magnetic scattering, and establish neutron spectroscopy as a powerful, momentum-resolved probe of their magnetic character.

カーボンナノチューブ(CNT)含有アルミナ複合材料により作製した加熱ジャケットをマイクロ波吸収体として用い、水溶液中のNi(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$・6H$$_{2}$$Oから酸化ニッケル(NiO)粉末をマイクロ波脱硝法により合成する手法を検討した。CNTを含有する加熱ジャケットは有効なマイクロ波吸収体として機能し、フラスコ内の水溶液中のNi(NO$$_{3}$$)$$_{2}$$・6H$$_{2}$$Oの温度は熱伝導により500$$^{circ}$$Cまで継続的に上昇し、結晶性のNiO粒子が得られた。CNT含有アルミナ複合材料はハイブリッド加熱システムにおけるマイクロ波吸収体として有望であることが明らかとなった。

Metallic materials can exhibit low-temperature serrated deformation (LTSD) at cryogenic temperatures, potentially causing sudden failures. Understanding LTSD is thus crucial for ensuring material reliability in such environments. LTSD has been explained by two main mechanisms: (i) dislocation-based mechanical instability and (ii) thermomechanical instability, but each has limitations when considered alone. To address this, we propose a new LTSD mechanism, a thermally induced dislocation dynamics model, based on cryogenic experimental evidence. This model accounts for dislocation avalanches and localized heating, leading to hierarchical dislocation networks and transitions in deformation modes. A modified deformation-mechanism map for SS316L is also presented. Our findings highlight the rate-dependent nature of LTSD and negative strain-rate sensitivity, including the first observation of links between small stress fluctuations and large serrations.

Stabilizing the unstable; Enhancing OER durability with 3$$d$$-orbital transition metal multielemental alloy nanoparticles by atomically dispersed 4$$d$$-orbital Pd for a 100-fold extended lifetime

Earth-abundant 3$$d$$-orbital late transition metals are the most used and highly desired catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but are prone to quick oxidative dissolution, leading to poor durability. We first report that FeCoNiCu multielemental alloy nanoparticles (MEANPs) can be stabilized with only 0.3 at.%Pd, a 4$$d$$-orbital element. Although pure Pd is known for extremely poor OER activity and durability, Pd-FeCoNiCu sustains 1000 h at 10 mA cm$$^{-2}$$. In an accelerating durability test (ADT) at 100 mA cm$$^{-2}$$, it exhibits a mere 8.9 mV increase over 25 h with a degradation rate of 0.356 mVh$$^{-1}$$, which is 1/350th that of FeCoNiCu (125 mVh$$^{-1}$$) and among the most stable OER catalysts reported so far. Aberration-corrected HAADF-STEM and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) reveal that atomically dispersed Pd atoms, surrounded by Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu atoms, contributed to a more delocalized electronic structure and stronger bonding via strong $$d$$-$$d$$/$$sp$$ hybridization and the vibronic coupling induced by atomic displacement. The altered local density of states (LDOS) of Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu mitigates the oxidation of FeCoNiCu in OER by over 50%, quantified by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), making the combination of these five dissoluble elements a durable catalyst.

Attempt to synthesize the proton-unbound $$^{182,183}$$Bi isotopes

The near-symmetric complete fusion reaction $$^{78}$$Kr+$$^{107}$$Ag=$$^{185}$$Bi$$^{*}$$ was studied at the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS with an attempt to synthesize the extremely neutron-deficient proton-unbound $$^{182,183}$$Bi isotopes. No decay events which could be attributed to them were observed. The two- and three-particle evaporation residues $$^{180,179}$$Hg ($$alpha p$$, $$alpha pn$$) and $$^{183,182}$$Pb($$pn$$,$$p2n$$) were identified. Based on the yields of 182,183Pb in the present work and the systematics of the ratios between the cross sections of $$p(x-1)n$$ and $$xn$$ evaporation channels for the most neutron-deficient odd-Z nuclei above lead, the upper limits for the half-lives of $$^{182,183}$$Bi were estimated to be less than 0.3$$mu$$s.

Antiferromagnetic van der Waals family $$M$$P$$X_{3}$$ ($$M$$ = Fe, Mn, Co, and Ni; $$X$$ = S and Se) have attracted significant research attention due to the possibility of realizing long-range magnetic order down to the monolayer limit. Here, we perform inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single-crystal samples of MnPSe$$_{3}$$, a member of the $$M$$P$$X_{3}$$ family, to study the spin dynamics and determine the effective spin model. The excited magnon bands are well characterized by a spin model, which includes a Heisenberg term with three intraplane exchange parameters ($$J_{1} = -0.73$$ meV, $$J_{2} = -0.014$$ meV, $$J_{3} = -0.43$$ meV) and one interplane parameter ($$J_{c} = -0.054$$ meV), and an easy-plane single-ion anisotropy term ($$D = -0.035$$ meV). Additionally, we observe the intersection of the magnon and phonon bands but no anomalous spectral features induced by the formation of magnon-phonon hybrid excitations at the intersecting region. We discuss possible reasons for the absence of such hybrid excitations in MnPSe$$_{3}$$.

In situ neutron diffraction during tensile deformation was performed for the stainless steels prepared by the additive manufacturing (AM) processes with two strategies: vertically built and horizontally built. The AM steels were further aged without solid solution treatment. As the results, the retained austenite was found to be more stable because the chemical composition became homogeneous by aging, and the onset of deformation induced martensitic transformation was delayed.

TbMn$$_{6}$$Sn$$_{6}$$ is a correlated topological magnet with a Mn-based kagome lattice, in which a Chern gap opens at the Dirac point at low temperatures. The magnetic moment direction of the ferrimagnetic order changes from in the kagome plane to the out-of-plane upon cooling, which is essential for generating the Chern gap, but the underlying mechanism for the spin reorientation remains elusive. Here, we investigate the spin-reorientation transition in TbMn$$_{6}$$Sn$$_{6}$$ using neutron scattering. We provide direct evidence for the spin-reorientation transition and unveil the coexistence of two Tb modes at 200 K. To account for these results, we put forward a model based on SU(N) spin-wave theory, in which there is a temperature evolution of the ground state Tb $$4f$$ orbitals, driven by the crystalline electric field, single-ion anisotropy, and exchange interactions between Tb and Mn ions. Our findings shed light on the complex magnetism of TbMn$$_{6}$$Sn$$_{6}$$, despite its relatively simple ground state magnetic structure, and provide insights into the mechanisms for tuning magnetic topological materials.

This is the summary of all presentations and discussions of the working group C on the accelerator systems as a role of convener of this working group at the 68th ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics Workshop on High-Intensity and High-Brightness Hadron Beams, named HB2023 held at CERN during October 9-13, 2023. The talks were selected keeping 100% geographical balance and covering all parts of circular accelerators at present and future ones. The presentations were chaired sharing by 3 conveners and a report was presented by me at the final day. This summary gives an overview of the accelerator systems of mostly all high-intensity accelerators worldwide presently operating, upgrade strategies and new techniques for next generation accelerators.

A One-third magnetization plateau phase as evidence for the Kitaev interaction in a honeycomb-lattice antiferromagnet

The magnetization of a quantum magnet can be pinned at a fraction of its saturated value by collective effects. One example of such a plateau phase is found in spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnets. They feature strong geometrical frustration and the plateau phase therein is often interpreted as arising from an order-by-disorder mechanism driven by quantum fluctuations. Here we observe a one-third magnetization plateau under an applied magnetic field in the spin-1 antiferromagnet Na$$_{3}$$Ni$$_{2}$$BiO$$_{6}$$ with a honeycomb lattice, which, with conventional magnetic interactions, would not be geometrically frustrated. Based on our elastic neutron scattering measurements, we propose the spin structure of the plateau phase to be an unusual partial spin-flop ferrimagnetic order. Our theoretical calculations indicate that bond-anisotropic Kitaev interactions are the source of frustration that produces the plateau. These results suggest that Kitaev interactions provide a different route to frustration and phases driven by quantum fluctuations in high-spin magnets.

Tensile overload-induced texture effects on the fatigue resistance of a CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

The present study investigates the crystallographic-texture effects on the improved fatigue resistance in the CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) with the full-size geometry of the ASTM Standards E647-99. We exploited X-ray nano-diffraction mapping to characterize the crystal-deformation levels ahead of the crack tip after stress unloading under both constant- and tensile overloaded-fatigue conditions. The crack-tip blunting-induced much higher deformation level was concentrated surrounding the crack-tip which delays the fatigue-crack growth immediately after a tensile overload. The predominant deformation texture orientation in the Paris regime was investigated, using electron backscatter diffraction and orientation distribution function analyses. The twinning formation-driven shear deformation gave rise to the development of the Goss-type texture within the plastic deformation regime under a tensile-overloaded-fatigue condition, which was attributed to enhance the crack deflection and thus the tensile induced crack-growth-retardation period in the CoCrFeMnNi HEA.

Although considerable progress has been made in the theoretical understanding of the low-dimensional frustrated quantum magnets, experimental realizations of a well-established scaling analysis are still scarce. This is particularly true for the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic triangular lattices. Owing to the small exchange strength, the newly discovered compound Na$$_{2}$$BaCo(PO$$_{4}$$)$$_{2}$$ provides a rare opportunity for clarifying the quantum criticality in an ideal triangular lattice with quantum spin S=1/2. In addition to the establishment of the complete phase diagrams, the spin Hamiltonian with a negligible interplane interaction has been determined through the spin wave dispersion in the polarized state, which is consistent with the observation of a two-dimensional quantum critical point with the Bose-Einstein condensation of diluted free bosons.

Estimating fine melt pool, coarse melt pool, and heat affected zone effects on the strengths of additive manufactured AlSi10Mg alloys

Fine melt pool (FMP), coarse melt pool (CMP), and heat affected zone (HAZ) are generally observed in the additive manufactured AlSi10Mg alloys. In this study, we demonstrated that the yield strength can be estimated by the combination of the sizes and volume fractions of FMP, CMP, HAZ together with the second-phase hardening. Two different AlSi10Mg alloys fabricated via powder bed fusion (PBF) process were prepared to examine the lattice strain evolution of constituent phases during uniaxial tensile loading via in-situ neutron diffraction measurements. The horizontally-built (Hz-built) exhibited a much better yield and tensile strength as well as elongation compared to the vertically-built (Vt-built) AlSi10Mg alloy. We reported empirical strength quantification based on the sizes and ratios of fine melt pool (FMP), coarse melt pool (CMP), and heat affected zone (HAZ) together with the possible failure mode to prevent early fracture in the additive manufactured alloys.

First observation of the decay of the 13/2$$^+$$ isomer in $$^{183}$$Hg and $$B$$(${it M}$2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2$$^+$$ isomeric state in $$^{183}$$Hg was observed for the first time following the $$alpha$$ decay of the 13/2$$^+$$ isomer in $$^{187}$$Pb produced in the $$^{142}$$Nd$$(^{50}$$Cr$$, 2p3n)$$ reaction. Using $$alpha$$-$$gamma$$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) $$mu$$s. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy $$M$$2 transition to the known 9/2$$^-$$ member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2$$^-$$[514] band, followed by a 105-keV $$M$$1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B($$M$$2)$$geq$$0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2$$^+$$ isomer in $$^{181}$$Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B($$M$$2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

Fine structure in the $$alpha$$ decay of the 8$$^{+}$$ isomer in $$^{216,218}$$U

The extremely neutron-deficient even-even uranium isotopes $$^{216,218}$$U were produced in the complete-fusion reactions induced by impinging $$^{40}$$Ar and $$^{40}$$Ca ions on $$^{180,182,184}$$W targets. Fusion evaporation residues were separated in flight by the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS (Spectrometer for Heavy Atoms and Nuclear Structure) and subsequently identified using the recoil-$$alpha$$-correlation method. In this paper, we report on new $$alpha$$-decay activities with $$E_{alpha} = 10163(27)$$ keV for $$^{216}$$U and $$E_{alpha} = 10073(16)$$ keV for $$^{218}$$U, which decay from the 8$$^{+}$$ isomeric states of $$^{216,218}$$U into the 2$$^{+}$$ states of their daughter nuclei $$^{212,214}$$Th, respectively. The new results extend the systematics of the $$alpha$$-decay fine structure for the $$N$$ = 124 and 126 even-even isotones.

Identification of excited states in $$^{188}$$Bi and $$^{188}$$Po

The neutron-deficient $$^{188}$$Bi and $$^{188}$$Po isotopes have been studied by $$gamma$$-ray spectroscopy using the recoil-decay tagging technique with the Argonne Gas-Filled Analyzer. A new 0.25(5)-micro second isomeric state and a prompt cascade formed by 319-, 366-, and 462-keV $$gamma$$ rays have been established on top of the (10$$^{-}$$) $$alpha$$-decaying isomer in $$^{188}$$Bi. The first excited (2$$^{+}$$) state in $$^{188}$$Po was identified, its excitation energy of 242(2) keV continues the nearly constant trend for the first 2$$^{+}$$ states in $$^{190,192,194}$$Po. The state is most likely a member of a prolate rotational band built on the ground state, albeit mixing with other coexisting configurations cannot be excluded. The new results obtained in the present work provide new information to shape coexistence in bismuth and polonium isotopes near the neutron midshell at $$N$$ = 104. In this mass region, a reduction in the prompt $$gamma$$-ray yield obtained with recoil decay tagging was observed for a few nuclides, and the possible reasons are presented.
