Several Monte Carlo Track-Structure (MCTS) codes for liquid water have been developed worldwide over the last 40 years; however, use the different interaction cross sections. This study evaluates the uncertainties of physical features (electronic stopping power, pathlength, dose-point-kernel, and microdosimetry) of low-energy electron transport in liquid water by using 6 types of MCTS codes. The intercomparison results reveal significant differences among MCTS codes at low energies, especially below ~100 eV, potentially compromising the accuracy of DNA damage simulations where such electrons play a key role. The present work highlights the need for further development of the physics models used in MCTS codes to reduce the uncertainties associated with low-energy electron transport calculations in liquid water.

A significant increase in the recovery strain of a high-Zr $$beta$$-Ti alloy from 2.25 % to 5.5 % when decreasing the deformation temperature from 300 K to 77 K is reported in this study. It is found that the super-elasticity of this alloy is independent of the $$beta$$-grain size at 77 K. The results reveal that a coarse-grained specimen exhibited approximately the same super-elasticity as its ultra-fine grain counterpart at 77 K. The relative easiness of deformation-induced martensitic transformation and dislocation slip was substantially changed at 77 K, with a strong suppression of dislocation slip, which overshadowed the effect of grain refinement on the super-elasticity.

This paper presents a set of findings that enhances the performance of these systems through the use of microfluidic networks, integrated valves and microscale optical cuvettes formed by three-dimensional printing in hard/soft hybrid materials systems, for accurate spectroscopic and fluorometric assays. Field studies demonstrate the capability of these microcuvette systems to evaluate the concentrations of copper, chloride, and glucose in sweat, along with the sweat pH, with laboratory grade accuracy and sensitivity.

$$beta$$-delayed neutron emission has been of interest since the discovery of nuclear fission. In nuclear power reactors, delayed-neutron data play a crucial role in reactor kinetics calculations and safe operation. $$beta$$-delayed neutron data also have a significant impact in the field of nuclear structure and astrophysics especially as nuclei farther away from stability are explored at the new generation of radioactive beam facilities. Several compilations of $$beta$$-decay half-lives and delayed-neutron emission probabilities are available, however, complete documentation of measurements and evaluation procedures is often missing for these properties. Efforts to address this gap in nuclear data and create an updated compilation and evaluation of $$beta$$-delayed neutron properties were undertaken under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which formed a Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on "Development of a Reference Database of Beta-delayed Neutron Emission Data". In this paper we summarize the work that was performed and present the results of the CRP.

Prompt Gamma-ray Analysis (PGA) uses capture $$gamma$$ rays, which are characteristic of each particular nucleus emitted from a sample while it is being irradiated with neutrons. It has been used as a rapid, nondestructive method for performing both qualitative and quantitative multielemental analysis. Therefore, cosmochemical, environmental, archeological samples and samples from materials science and engineering are analyzed. Although, researchers have endeavored to improve the accuracy and the detection sensitivity in PGA with the coincidence and anti-coincidence methods, further improvements are possible. We developed a new analytical technique (TOF-PGA) that combines Prompt Gamma-ray Analysis (PGA) and time-of-flight elemental analysis (TOF) by using an intense pulsed neutron beam at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). It allows us to obtain the results from both methods at the same time. Moreover, it can be used to quantify elemental concentrations in the sample, to which neither of these methods can be applied independently, if TOF-PGA is used. TOF-PGA showed high merits, although the capability may differ in terms of the target element and coexisting elements.
