Grain size independence of cryogenic strain recovery behavior in high-Zr $$beta$$-Ti alloy

A significant increase in the recovery strain of a high-Zr $$beta$$-Ti alloy from 2.25 % to 5.5 % when decreasing the deformation temperature from 300 K to 77 K is reported in this study. It is found that the super-elasticity of this alloy is independent of the $$beta$$-grain size at 77 K. The results reveal that a coarse-grained specimen exhibited approximately the same super-elasticity as its ultra-fine grain counterpart at 77 K. The relative easiness of deformation-induced martensitic transformation and dislocation slip was substantially changed at 77 K, with a strong suppression of dislocation slip, which overshadowed the effect of grain refinement on the super-elasticity.

The layered perovskite PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ demonstrates a strong negative thermal expansion (NTE) which holds potential for being fabricated into composites with zero thermal expansion. The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magneto-volume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCo$$_{2}$$O$$_{5.5}$$ is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic less-insulating small-volume (FLISV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multi-ferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new path way to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

An experiment for the laser self-guiding studies has been carried out with 100 TW laser pulse interaction with the long underdense plasma. Formation of extremely long plasma channel with its length, about 10 mm, 20 times above the Rayleigh length is observed. The self-focusing channel features such as the laser pulse significant bending and the electron cavity formation are demonstrated experimentally for the first time.

Positron lifetime measurement on centrifuged Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ intermetallic compound

Proceedings of 1st International Conference on Diffusion in Solids and Liquids (DSL 2005), p.531 - 533, 2005/07

Recently, we formed atomic-scale graded structures in some miscible alloys and observed the decomposition in Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$ intermetallic compound by sedimentation of atoms under strong gravitational field. In this study, we measured positron lifetime of centrifuged Bi$$_{3}$$Pb$$_{7}$$, to which the composition change was very small as it was treated at low temperature. It was found that the positron lifetime became longer than that of starting state. This indicated that the point defects (vacancy or divacancy) increased in the sample by centrifugal treatment. We are now investigating the relationship between increase in point defects and sedimentation of atoms.

Review of neutron cross-section evaluations for fission products included in 5 major evaluated nuclear-data libralies was performed. The aim of the project, conducted under the WPEC Subgroup 21 during 2001-2004, was to prepare recommendations for best evaluations of nuclei in the range Z=1-68. Altogether, existing evaluations for 211 materials were reviewd, 7 new materials were added, and recommendations were prepared for 218 materials.

Port Limiter is one of important components of ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) with sophisticated geometry. A particular and accurate MCNP input model of ITER with Port Limiter for nuclear analysis was generated with MCAM (Monte Carlo particle Transport Calculated Automatic Modeling System). This paper introduces the detailed work flow of preprocessing of CAD engineering model and validates the MCNP model generated before the actual calculation. The successful application demonstrates that MCAM is capable of dramatically increasing the efficiency and accuracy to generate MC (Monte Carlo) models from CAD engineering models with complex geometry comparing with the traditional manual modeling method.
