Proceedings of International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles; Next Generation Nuclear Systems for Sustainable Development (FR-17) (USB Flash Drive), 10 Pages, 2017/06
The next generation fast reactor is being investigated in Japan, aiming at several targets such as "safety", "reduction of environmental burden" and "economic competitiveness". As for the safety aspect, FAIDUS concept is adopted to avoid re-criticality in core destructive accidents. The uranium-plutonium mixed oxide fuel, in which minor actinide elements are included, will be applied to reduce the amount and potential radio-toxicity of radioactive wastes. The high burn-up fuel is pursued to reduce fuel cycle cost. The candidate concept of the core and fuel design, which could satisfy various design criteria by design devisals, has been established. In addition, JAEA is investigating material properties and irradiation behavior of MA-MOX fuel. JAEA is developing the fuel design code especially for the fuel pin with annular pellets of MA-bearing MOX. Furthermore, JAEA is developing oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic steel cladding for the high burnup fuel.

Economic tunnel support design for Horonobe underground research laboratory was obtained according to the relationship in the direction of the initial stress and the direction of excavation. The authors compared between the in situ convergence results and calculated results in order to investigate the validity of initial stress measurements. As a result, a positive correlation was observed between the in situ convergence results and calculated results, and the difference between the two was able to be explained by the difference between the assumed deformation coefficient and the measured coefficient. From these results, the measurement results of the initial stress performed in the surface based investigation has been confirmed almost reasonable.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. On the other hand, the necessity of research reactor, which is used for human resources development, progress of the science and technology, industrial use and safety research is increasing for the countries which are planning to introduce the nuclear power plants. From above background, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss a basic concept of Multipurpose Compact Research Reactor (MCRR) for education and training, etc., on 2010 to 2012. This activity is also expected to contribute to design tool improvement and human resource development in the center. In 2011, design study of reactor core, irradiation facilities with high versatility and practicality, and hot laboratory equipment for the production of Mo-99 was carried out. As the result of design study of reactor core, subcriticality and operation time of the reactor in consideration of an irradiation capsule, and about the transient response of the reactor to the reactivity disturbance during automatic control operation, it was possible to do automatic operation of MCRR, was confirmed. As the result of design study of irradiation facilities, it was confirmed that the implementation of an efficient mass production radioisotope Mo-99 can be expected. As the result of design study with hot laboratory facilities, Mo-99 production, RI export devised considered cell and facilities for exporting the specimens quickly was designed.

The ion temperature reduces with ECH after the increase in the electron temperature where an increase in the ion heat transport with ECH accompanies an increase in the electron thermal transport. The core electron density decreases with ECH when the density profile is peaked before ECH injection. The counter intrinsic rotation with ECH is identified using H-mode plasmas with small torque input (BAL-NBI). The counter intrinsic rotation is generated after the increase in the electron temperature and correlates with the change in the electron temperature with ECH around the EC deposition. Time scale of the change in the toroidal rotation velocity is about 90-200 ms around the ECH deposition and the time scale is longer compared to those in and .

This paper presents measures against gas emission during deep shaft excavation in the Horonobe Underground Research Laboratory Project (Horonobe URL Project). The gas control measures taken in the Horonobe URL Project include the following: (1) determination of the amount of methane contained in surrounding strata and groundwater, and gas concentration based on preliminary investigations, (2) determination of the specifications of fans, dust collectors, and ducts through ventilation network analysis (simulation), (3) reduction of methane gas emission through the use of waterproofing grout, (4) prohibition on the use of internal-combustion engine and the adoption of explosion-proof equipment, (5) development of methane gas control system, and (6) monitoring of methane gas emission. (3) to (6) described above are performed daily in the safety management activities and described in detail in this paper. The ventilation and eastern access shafts have currently reached a depth of 290 m and 250 m, respectively. The emission of methane gas has been observed to rise 0.3 % to 1.3 % in the fault zone, and it is controlled appropriately according to the gas control measures described above. As the measure to reduce the methane gas concentration, monitoring is confirmed to be effective.

The number of research reactors in the world is decreasing because of their aging. However, the planning to introduce the nuclear power plants is increasing in Asian countries. In these Asian countries, the key issue is the human resource development for operation and management of nuclear power plants after constructed them, and also the necessity of research reactor, which is used for lifetime extension of LWRs, progress of the science and technology, expansion of industry use, human resources training and so on, is increasing. From above backgrounds, the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center began to discuss basic concept of a multipurpose low-power research reactor for education and training, etc. This design study is expected to contribute not only to design tool improvement and human resources development in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center but also to maintain and upgrade the technology on research reactors in nuclear power-related companies. This report treats the activities of the working group from July 2010 to June 2011 on the multipurpose low-power research reactor in the Neutron Irradiation and Testing Reactor Center and nuclear power-related companies.

It is found that ECRF increases the toroidal momentum diffusivity and the convection velocity. ECRF drives the CO-intrinsic rotation inside the EC deposition and drives the CTR-intrinsic rotation outside the EC deposition. This CTR-rotation starts from the EC deposition radius and propagates to the edge region.

H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

In this study, the temporal and spatial responses of electron channels and ion channels to central electron cyclotron heating (ECH) have been investigated in positive shear H-mode plasmas and weak shear plasmas with internal transport barriers (ITBs) on JT-60U. The flattening of ne profile is observed after the increase in Te in the core region. Linear gyrokinetic stability analyses predict that the growth rate of the trapped electron modes, which increase outward particle flux, becomes more pronounced during ECH. Ion temperature around the ITB foot rapidly reduces and the increase in Te precedes the reduction in Ti. From the observations and theoretical analyses, the reduced Ti can be interpreted as the decrease in the critical temperature gradient for the ion temperature gradient mode with ECH. The counter intrinsic rotation with ECH is identified on H-mode plasmas with small torque input where co-current NBs and counter-current NBs are simultaneously injected with the same power.
