Experimental identification of electric field excitation mechanisms in a structural transition of tokamak plasmas

In this Letter, we report model verifications for a key physics for the L-H transition. Radial electric field excitation, using discharges having a two-step transition. Examining time derivative of Poissons equation, it is found that the sum of the loss cone loss current and neoclassical bulk viscosity current agrees the experimentally observed current in the order of magnitude at the first transition. Following second transition and an ambipolar condition in the L-mode cannot be explained by the models.

Surface modification effects on hydrogen absorption property of a hydrogen storage alloy by short pulse laser irradiation

A short pulse laser (the nanosecond and femtosecond) was applied to hydrogen absorbing alloys surface layer, and a surface modification experiment was put into effective to aim at improvement of hydrogen adsorption functionally. It was investigated about correlation between an initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate of hydrogen alloys and a laser irradiation in this research. The laser irradiation condition was done with pulse width 100 fsec and energy 0.2 - 3.4 mJ/pulse. It blazed down on hydrogen absorbing alloys (LaNi$$_{4.6}$$Al$$_{0.4}$$) and changed local order in the surface. As a result, the initial hydrogen absorption reaction rate was 1.5 - 3.0 times as fast as a irradiated sample, and the result and laser irradiated sample found out that a hydrogen absorption function improves. A laser irradiation can conclude to be effective in surface modification of the hydrogen storage materials.

Dynamics of edge limit cycle oscillation in the JFT-2M tokamak

In the JFT-2M tokamak, limit-cycle oscillation among several variables is observed before L-to-H transition. Spatiotemporal dynamics of the LCO is analyzed in detail. Zonal fows are not seen, and modulation in edge-localized poloidal flow and density gradient is observed. Modulation is also seen in Reynolds stress, caused by that in turbulence intensity and turbulence wavenumber. However, flow acceleration is not able to be explained by the modulation in the Reynolds stress. Rapid inward propagation in density gradient and turbulence packet is also observed. Characteristics of the propagation are veried by means of turbulence spreading theory and diffusion theory.

Demonstration of partially transparent thick metallic sodium in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral range

We describe the direct measurement of actual transmittance of sodium samples with thickness of a 2 mm and 3 mm in a spectral range $$>$$115 nm, resulting in $$>$$50% transmittance of 3 mm thick solid and liquid sodium samples including transmission of a pair of the windows at the wavelength of 120 nm, giving an extinction coefficient of $$sim$$10$$^{-6}$$ to $$sim$$10$$^{-7}$$ which represents the sodium with a few cm thickness to be partially transparent for this wavelength. To confirm the measurement, we perform simple imaging experiments by the ultra-violet light passing through a 8 mm-thick sodium sample to illuminate a mesh as an object, resulting in obtaining a clear image.

We investigated the structure changes of a hydrogen storage alloy by ion irradiations, and its absorption property in order to obtain basic data and to elucidate relevant mechanisms of hydrogen absorption by the influence of the irradiation. In previous studies, the induction of vacancies in a hydrogen absorption alloy was found to be effective to increase in the hydrogen absorption rate. As well known, the rate of hydrogen absorption strongly depends upon the surface state of a hydrogen storage alloy because the dissociation of hydrogen molecules or water molecules needs electron change with the surface in the H$$_{2}$$ gas or electrochemical reaction process. In this study, ion irradiations were made at a room temperature using the laser driven proton beam method, at Kansai Photon Science Institute, Japan Atomic Energy Agency. The beam treatment has several unique properties such as short pulse duration, high peak current, low transverse emittance, and wide energy range from KeV to MeV. The irradiation was used to modify the alloy surface using this equipment. From obtained results, the initial hydrogen absorption rate was found improved by the laser driven proton beam rather more effectively than a mono-energetic proton beam. Discussion is made on the correlation among proton irradiation (laser driven proton or mono-energetic proton) and the initial hydrogen absorption rate of the alloy. We argue about the usefulness of an energy spread beam.

Spatiotemporal structures of edge limit-cycle oscillation before L-to-H transition in the JFT-2M tokamak

In this Letter, we report analyses of spatiotemporal dynamics of turbulence and structure in the limit cycle oscillation that precedes L-to-H transition. Zonal flows are not observed during LCO, and the oscillation is the periodic generations/decays of barrier with edge localized mean flow. Oscillatory Reynolds stress is found too small to accelerate the LCO flow. Changes of the density gradient and turbulence amplitude are found to propagate into the core in a ballistic manner, suggesting a cause of fast change of core transport after H-mode transition.

Laser cutting method, is that the metal melted by laser power is removed by assist gas, has some advantages which are high speed cutting and narrow line-width cutting for the thin metal. We has conducted the joint research with the relevant organizations on the R&D of the laser cutting technology for cutting stainless and carbon steel of over the 150 mm thickness which is maximum thickness of core structure in Fugen. We report the R&D plan and the current status of the laser cutting test.

This paper reviews recent improvement in the source development of laser-driven X-ray lasers and the applications in the research fields of material science, laser processing, X-ray imaging, and radiation damage in biological cells. In the application for material science, we have firstly observed temporal correlation between the domain structures of ferro-electric substance under the Curie temperature. In the laser processing, new X-ray laser interferometer reveals us the nano-scale surface distortion of substance pumped by a femto-second optical pulse. In the X-ray diffraction image, we have taken several static images of micro-structure of samples: now we are trying to extend the objective to nano-scale dynamics using pump and probe method. In the radiation damage of biological cells, we observed double strand break in DNA using X-ray laser exposure; this results are compared with the case using incoherent several KeV X-ray exposure.

This is a conference report of the 37th European Physical Society Conference on Plasma Physics which was held at Dublin City University in Dublin, Ireland from 21st June to 25th June, 2010. A laser-driven repetition-rated 1.9 MeV proton beam line composed of permanent quadrupole magnets (PMQs), a radio frequency (rf) phase rotation cavity, and a tunable monochromator is developed to evaluate and to test the simulation of laser-accelerated proton beam transport through an integrated system for the first time. In addition, the proton spectral modulation and focusing behavior of the rf phase rotationcavity device is monitored with input from a PMQ triplet. In the 1.9 MeV region we observe very weakproton defocusing by the phase rotation cavity. The final transmitted bunch duration and transverse profile are well predicted by the PARMILA particle transport code. The transmitted proton beam duration of 6 ns corresponds to an energy spread near 5% for which the transport efficiency is simulated to be 10%. The predictive capability of PARMILA suggests that it can be useful in the design of future higher energy transport beam lines as part of an integrated laser-driven ion accelerator system.

Recent progress in the energy recovery linac project in Japan

Future synchrotron light source using a 5-GeV energy recovery linac (ERL) is under proposal by our Japanese collaboration team, and we are conducting R&D efforts for that. We are developing high-brightness DC photocathode guns, two types of cryomodules for both injector and main superconducting (SC) linacs, and 1.3 GHz high CW-power RF sources. We are also constructing the Compact ERL (cERL) for demonstrating the recirculation of low-emittance, high-current beams using above-mentioned critical technologies.

Construction of the Compact ERL is planned in Japan, in order to test the key technology to realize a future ERL based X-ray light source. The operation of 60-200 MeV beam energy and 100 mA beam current are proposed. The superconducting cavity is one of the key components and applied for the injector part and the main linac part. At the injector part, most challenging issue is an input coupler, which has to handle more than 300 kW input power per cavity. On the other hand, strong HOM damping is required for the main linac, in order to avoid beam instabilities and large heat load at cryomodules. Status of cavity developments, together with cryomodule developments, including input couplers and HOM couplers/absorbers, are described in this paper.

The concept of a compact ion particle accelerator has become attractive in view of recent progress in laser-driven hadrons acceleration. The Photo Medical Research Center (PMRC) of JAEA was recently established to address the challenge of laser-driven ion accelerator development for hadron beam cancer therapy. PMRC considers conceptual designs of such a therapeutic instrument based on the current state in the laser-driven acceleration. We describe a conceptual gantry device that is designed by the general-purpose ion accelerator design code, PARMILA.

Focusing and spectral enhancement of a repetition-rated, laser-driven, divergent multi-MeV proton beam using permanent quadrupole magnets

A pair of conventional permanent magnet quadrupoles is used to focus a 2.4 MeV laser-driven proton beam at a 1 Hz repetition rate. The magnetic field strengths are 55 T/m and 60 T/m for the first and second quadrupoles respectively. The proton beam is focused to a spot size (full width at half maximum) of 2.7$$times$$8 mm$$^{2}$$ at a distance of 650 mm from the source. This result is in good agreement with a Monte Carlo particle trajectory simulation.

Progress in R&D efforts on the energy recovery linac in Japan
