Review of articles related to the accident of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station published on Japanese Journal of Health Physics; Opinion and others

The Health Physics Society of Japan established a working group to obtain the insights and findings from the articles, which are related to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) accident, published in the Japanese Journal of Health Physics. This paper describes the results of the review on 47 articles, which are classified into the field without risk communication, environmental measurement and monitoring, radiation dose measurement and assessment, radiation medicine and radioactive waste. In the reviewed articles, there are various insights and issues depending on the standpoint of the authors and social interests in the timing those published. It is important to face these insights and issues to consider prudently "what is health physics or radiation protection?" for the future development of the Health Physics society.

For the purpose of improving the precision of probabilistic seismic PRA for NPPs, the authors developed the methodology for generating hazard-consistent ground motions based on stochastic fault models which include seismic-source uncertainties by Monte Carlo Simulation. The PRA with HCGMs would require a lot of computer power. The optimization of ground-motions generations is one of the most important subjects for practical application of the PRA method. For optimizing the ground-motions generations, seismic sources for the generations should be selected effectively, and this can be conducted by utilizing optimal seismic index in the hazard analysis. In this study, the method for detecting the optimal seismic intensity index which corresponds with damage probabilities of the target equipment system was developed, and the validity of the proposed method was confirmed for some equipment systems, which has different weak equipment with each other.

J-PARC had developed the beam diagnostic devices for the present J-PARC linac and has used them since the operation start. J-PARC linac began the energy upgrade project since 2009 and 21 ACS cavities will be installed. Because the beam parameters are updated due to the project, new beam diagnostic devices are additionally fabricated and the diagnostic devices at the downstream part where the beam energy will be increased up to 400 MeV by ACS cavities should be developed. In this paper, we introduce the development of the beam diagnostic devices for the project and the new developing devices.

Injection and dump line monitor system of J-PARC RCS

At the injection and H0 dump line of J-PARC RCS, different beam monitors have been installed. Main purpose of the beam monitors in the injection line is to generate a beam position and profile to adjust the injection trajectory to the RCS ring. To guide the injected beam precisely is, needless to say, required to reduce the beam loss in the ring. Hence the monitor system is one of the most essential to operate the RCS. At the injection point, there are also some beams that are not match the RCS ring, that is negative and neutral proton beam. H0 dump accepts the unsuitable beams through the H0 dump line. The power limitation of the H0 dump is 4 kW. The monitor system in the dump line is to handle the beam and to monitor the dumped beam power. At the conference these monitor systems will be outlined.

The J-PARC LINAC requires for fine control of beam position to minimize beam loss. So that BPMs need to be calibrated with the accuracy of about a hundred micro-meters. The accuracy of BPMs are calibrated with the calibration tool and real beam. In this paper, details of these developments around BPMs are to be reported.

The photo neutralization method with Nd:YAG laser for negative hydrogen ions has been expected as an available candidate for the transverse beam profile measurement. The fraction of photo detached electron can also be used for charge exchange procedure to extract very low power proton beam for Transmutation Experimental Facility in J-PARC. The laser system has advantages of maintenance and radiation hardness in high intensity proton accelerators. In order to establish the low power beam extraction system and beam profile monitor, the photo neutralization efficiency must be surveyed in practical beam line with high intensity H$$^{-}$$ beam. In this paper, an experimental set-up and preliminary results of photo neutralization method for intense H$$^{-}$$ beam in J-PARC MEBT1 are described.

Design of 4-stripline beam position monitors of the J-PARC linac SDTL

It proceeds with the beam monitor production of the beam diagnosis system with J-PARC. In this paper, the present status of beam position monitors (BPM) for the SDTL is described. The impedance of strip line monitor have been adjusted in the construction of housing and electrodes of the BPM. The 4-stripline BPM has already been examined in the medium energy beam transport (MEBT) line. Preliminary results of beam position measurement for various beam conditions are reported.

As a joint project of KEK and JAERI, a MW class of high intensity proton accelerator (J-PARC), consisting of Linac, 3 GeV-RCS, 50 GeV-MR, is under construction. For this accelerator, it is required to minimize the beam loss (typically, lower than0.1$$sim$$1 W/m at the linac). To achieve the requirement, beam trajectory needs to be controlled with accuracy of some 100 $$mu$$m. The first stage of the acceleration (up to 181 MeV during the first stage of construction) is done by linac. The beam position monitor (BPM) in the linac utilizes 4 stripline pickups (50 ohm) on the beam transportation chamber. In this paper, systematic calibration of the BPM is described.

Absorption Behavior of Gaseous Ruthenium into Water-Research Report on Solidification of High-Level Liquid Waste

Ruthenium tetroxide was generated and its absorption in condensation of steam was studied in the laboratory scale experiments. The results showed that the addition of No or NO$$_{2}$$ into RuO$$_{4}$$ promoted the absorption of ruthenium into water. The addition of NO$$_{2}$$ in about 189 molar ratio of NO$$_{2}$$/RuO$$_{4}$$ lowered gas/liquid ratio a for ruthenium to 1/168 in comparison with the test of no addition. The addition of NO in 22.2 molar ratio of NO/RuO$$_{4}$$ decreased the ratio $$m$$ to 1/1180. The effect of NO or NO$$_{2}$$ was explained by the experimental observation that NO or NO$$_{2}$$ transformed the ruthenium tetroxide into nitro complex of nitrosylruthenium which is more absorbable into water and less volatile.
