Magnetic properties of NdCrGe$$_{1-x}$$Ti$$_{x}$$O$$_{5}$$ having spin-$$frac{3}{2}$$ antiferromagnetic alternating chains of Cr spins and dimers of Nd moments

We investigated the magnetic properties of NdCrGe$$_{1-x}$$Ti$$_{x}$$O$$_{5}$$, in which Cr$$^{3+}$$ spins and Nd$$^{3+}$$ moments form spin-$$frac{3}{2}$$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) alternating chains and dimers, respectively. The $$x$$ ranges in which an AFM transition appears are narrow($$0 leqq x leqq 0.1$$ and $$0.8 leqq x leqq 1$$). We observed a broad maximum of specific heat and magnetic susceptibility. The maximum indicates the existence of AFM and ferromagnetic (FM) short-range order (SRO) at $$0.125 leqq x leqq 1$$ and $$0 leqq x leqq 0.1$$, respectively. The entropy shows that disordered components of Nd moments generating the FM SRO remain at $$T < T_{rm N}$$ (the AFM transition temperature) at $$0 leqq x leqq 0.1$$, similar to the existence of disordered components of Nd moments generating the AFM SRO at $$T < T_{N}$$ at $$0.8 leqq x leqq 1$$. The main origin of the AFM and FM SROs is AFM and FM interactions in Nd-Nd dimers ($$J_{rm{Nd}}$$), respectively. A discontinuous AFM-to-FM transition in the $$J_{rm{Nd}}$$ interaction occurs between $$x = 0.1$$ and $$x = 0.125$$. The coexistence of the AFM and FM $$J_{rm{Nd}}$$ interactions due to compositional inhomogeneity of Ge and Ti likely prevents Nd moments from magnetic ordering in the wide $$x$$ range ($$0.1 < x < 0.8$$). We observed the spin-gap excitation of Cr$$^{3+}$$ spins at 7.5 meV in inelastic neutron scattering measurements of NdCrGe$$_{0.25}$$Ti$$_{0.75}$$O$$_{5}$$. The existence of the spin-gap excitation at 1.8 K indicates no magnetic ordering of Cr$$^{3+}$$ spins at $$T leqq 1.8$$ K.
