The neutron instruments suite, installed at the spallation neutron source of the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), is reviewed. MLF has 23 neutron beam ports and 21 instruments are in operation for user programs or are under commissioning. A unique and challenging instrumental suite in MLF has been realized via combination of a high-performance neutron source, optimized for neutron scattering, and unique instruments using cutting-edge technologies. All instruments are/will serve in world-leading investigations in a broad range of fields, from fundamental physics to industrial applications. In this review, overviews, characteristic features, and typical applications of the individual instruments are mentioned.

In this present study, we examined the effects of heavy carbon-ions on development in pre-implantation period utilizing medaka blastula stage embryos (st. 11: blastderm diameter is about 500 m). We performed targeted irradiation by carbon-ion micro-beam (diameters of 120, 180 m) to a central parts of blastoderm and observed the abnormalities during development compared with whole-body irradiated embryos. As a results, retardation and characteristic malformed eyes were observed during development when blastoderm cells were partially irradiated, However, more than half of 50 Gy-irradiated embryos (area size=120 m diameter) could hatch normally in contrast to all embryos with 2 Gy of whole-body irradiation being lethal before hutching.

In recent years, technologies for an unmanned helicopter have been developed and applied to various fields. In expectation of the application of the unmanned helicopter to airborne radiation monitoring, we had developed a radiation monitoring system. Then, we measured the radiation level by using unmanned helicopter in soil contaminated areas by radioactive cesium emitted from the NPP to evaluate ambient dose-rate distribution around the areas. Here, we reports on the measurement technique and the result.

We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as and scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, and , determining the high and characterizing the low regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Rhenium-186(T=90h; E=1.1 MeV; E=137 keV) and rhenium-188(T=17h; E=2.1 MeV; E=153 keV) are particle emitting radionuclides with excellent properties for targeted radiotherapy. Re-188 has the advantages associated with carrier-free, generator-produced radionuclides. PZC generator with many tungsten molecules is expected for as practical generator. This generator was experimented for clarifying a characteristic. Meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is applied for palliative treatment of pain associated with disease. Effect of pH is studied on preparation of Re-DMSA.

Thermochronometric methods are used to identify the denudation history of the Akaishi Range, which has been uplifted since the late Pliocene. ZHe grain ages range 21.5-3.0 Ma and systematically younger to the east, implying a westerly tilting uplift of the Akaishi Range. We estimated denudation rates at 1.2-2.2 mm/yr or more in the Akaishi Range. These high denudation rates imply the topography of the Akaishi Range reflects post-uplift factors, e.g., spatial distribution of bedrock uplift rates and various denudation processes, rather than inherited geometry from the pre-uplift topography. Considering younger AFT ages previously reported in the southern part of the Akaishi Range, the Akaishi Range is considered to have had at least two uplifting stages, i.e., uplifting of the northern part since the late Pliocene and uplifting of the southern part since 1 Ma, probably attributable to reverse faulting of ISTL and collision of the Izu block to the south Fossa Magna area, respectively.
