We selected a safe and easy to manage material, mesitylene, as the RANS cold moderator. An efficient moderator system was designed by studying and optimizing a coupled cold neutron moderator of mesitylene at 20 K with a polyethylene (PE) pre-moderator at room temperature in the slab geometry with Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) simulations. The parameters of mesitylene and PE thickness, the reflector, and the shielding configuration were studied to increase cold neutron intensities. Consequently, an integrated cold neutron intensity of 1.1510n/cm/A at 2 m from the neutron-producing target was finally achieved, which was 12 times higher than that of the current PE moderator. The results showed attractive application prospect of mesitylene as cold neutron moderator material.

The magnetic measurements confirm that the material shows canted antiferromagnetic ordering at 240-288 K. Neutron diffraction patterns could be fitted with the centrosymmetric , which is different from the non-centrosymmetric structure proposed for the ferroelectric phase of NdCrO. The large dielectric constants are likely due to the hopping of charge carriers as proposed previously for other chromites.

A method to minimize the manufacturing error of the equilibrium-field coils has been established, aiming at the precise plasma shape/position control. A compact butt-joint has been successfully developed for the Central Solenoid, which allows an optimized utilization of the limited space for the Central Solenoid to extend the duration of the plasma pulse.

However, it is difficult to directly identify the active site by applying conventional structural or electronic probes to such complex systems. Here, we used C 1 X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to observe electronic structure of carbon in iron phthalocyanine-based catalysts, and found a signature of edge exposure below the edge, whose intensity is well correlated with the ORR activity. These results demonstrate that C 1 XAS can be used to characterize the ORR activity of carbon-based cathode catalysts in terms of the edge exposure.

Silk fibroin fabrics were irradiated with rays of 25 kGy doses, and the changes in their tensile properties and hue were investigated. Both the breaking tensile strength of the fabrics and their elongation at break were decreased after the irradiation, accompanied by their yellowing. However, the values of their tensile properties after the irradiation has been retained more than 90% of those without the irradiation. The degree of crystallinity was almost unchanged even after the irradiation.

Electrochemical analysis and Raman spectroscopy showed higher 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and more defect sites in PA than PhRs. The increase in the amount of adsorbed oxygen in PA was also identified by oxygen adsorption isotherms. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals that graphite-like nitrogen contributes to oxygen adsorption and C=O components are dominant in PA. These experimental results indicate that the adsorbed C=O components near the graphite-like nitrogen can be assigned as active sites for 2-electron ORR.

The substance and implication of PR from the viewpoints of risk evaluation on nuclear proliferation was studied in this paper. As an example, ten next-generation reprocessing technology candidates were evaluated with GIF PR and PP methodology to find degree of relative difference in PR from the presently available technology - PUREX. PR effectiveness in proliferation risk was also assessed and it was found that the effectiveness of PR measures is subject to the status of each nation.

DC and AC magnetic measurements showed short-range glassy magnetic ordering at Tg about 40 K. Such ordering was observed by neutron diffraction and is ascribable to the size mismatch of R and Sr settled randomly at the same crystallographic site. Dielectric constants for each material were about 1000-10000 between about 50 K and 300 K and showed broad maximums above Tg. Dielectric dispersion showed poor coherency of the motion of polar regions, plausibly because of the size-mismatch effect; both the magnetic and dielectric properties of this system are governed by the randomness at the R/Sr site. The tan and EXAFS data suggest that the dielectric response is rooted in a transfer of the Mn-3d electrons.

Significant differences between heliotron and tokamak plasmas are observed. The location of the ITB moves outward during the ITB formation regardless of the sign of magnetic shear in JT-60U and the ITB becomes more localized in the plasma with negative magnetic shear. In LHD, the low Te/Ti ratio ( 1) of the target plasma for the high power heating is found to be necessary condition to achieve the ITB plasma and the ITB location tends to expand outward or inward depending on the condition of the target plasmas. Associated with the formation of ITB, the carbon density tends to be peaked due to inward convection in JT-60U, while the carbon density becomes hollow due to outward convection in LHD. The outward convection observed in LHD contradicts the prediction by neoclassical theory.

To improve the voltage holding capability of the ion source, the understanding of the surface flashover is required. In this study, electron energy is estimated by measuring the bremsstrahlung X-ray emitted from an FRP insulator. Energy spectra of X-ray were measured for 3 different positions and compared with those of the vacuum gap between electrodes. Near the anode, X-ray spectrum was dominated by the monoenergetic electron. Near the cathode, spectrum peak shifted to low energy compared with that near the anode. This result showed that a large amount of low energy electrons was generated on the surface of the FRP insulator near the cathode.

Three key issues should be solved for the JT-60SA N-NBI ion source. One is to improve the voltage holding capability. Recent R&D tests suggested that the accelerator with a large area of grids may need a high margin in the design of electric field and a long time for conditioning. The second issue is to reduce the grid power loading. It was found that some beamlets were strongly deflected due to beamlet-beamlet interaction and strike on the grounded grid. The grids are to be designed by taking account of beamlet-beamlet interaction in three-dimensional simulation. Third is to maintain the D- production for 100 s. A simple cooling structure is proposed for the active cooled plasma grid, where a key is the temperature gradient on the plasma grid for uniform D- production. The modified N-NBI ion source will start on JT-60SA in 2015.

The control system for auxiliary pumping facility and primary water cooling facility in JT-60 NBI was updated. To realize the cost reduction, the control system with many input and outputs of 2000 was updated by JAEA itself using commercial Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's). JAEA also made software with 3600 ladder lines by JAEA itself based on commercial basic programs. In addition to the simple replacement of the hardware and software, the function of remote operation has been newly added. At present, the auxiliary pumping facility and the primary water cooling facility have been stably operated without troubles. The remote operation enables to collect the detailed information on the trouble more easily, resulting in a quick countermeasure for the trouble.
