Conceptual design of the iodine-sulfur process flowsheet with more than 50% thermal efficiency for hydrogen production

A conceptual design of a practical large scale plant of the thermochemical water splitting iodine-sulfur (IS) process flowsheet was carried out as a heat application of JAEA's commercial high temperature gas cooled reactor GTHTR300C plant design. Innovative techniques proposed by JAEA were applied for improvement of hydrogen production thermal efficiency; depressurized flash concentration H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ using waste heat from Bunsen reaction, prevention of H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ vaporization from a distillation column by introduction of H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ solution from a flash bottom, and I$$_{2}$$ condensation heat recovery in an HI distillation column. Hydrogen of about 31,900 Nm$$^{3}$$/h would be produced by 170 MW heat from the GTHTR300C. A thermal efficiency of 50.2% would be achievable with incorporation of the innovative techniques and high performance HI concentration and decomposition components and heat exchangers expected in future R&D.

The pre-licensing design of an HTGR cogeneration test plant to be coupled to JAEA's existing test reactor HTTR is presented. The plant is designed to demonstrate the system of JAEA commercial plant design GTHTR300C. With construction planned to be completed around 2025, the test plant is expected to be the first-of-a-kind nuclear system operating on two of the advanced energy conversion systems attractive for the HTGR closed cycle helium gas turbine for power generation and thermochemical iodine-sulfur water-splitting process for hydrogen production.

Pre-licensing basic design for a cogenerating HTGR test plant system is presented. The plant to be coupled to existing 30 MWt 950$$^{circ}$$C test reactor HTTR is intended as a system technology demonstrator for GTHTR300C plant design. More specifically the test plant of HTTR-GT/H$$_{2}$$ aims to (1)demonstrate the licensability of the GTHTR300C for electricity production by gas turbine and hydrogen cogeneration by thermochemical process and (2) confirm the operation control and safety of such cogeneration system. With construction and operation completion by 2025, the test plant is expected to be the first of a kind HTGR-powered cogeneration plant operating on the two advanced energy conversion systems of closed cycle helium gas turbine for power generation and thermochemical iodine-sulfur water-splitting process for hydrogen production.

Innovative techniques proposed by JAEA were applied for improvement of hydrogen production thermal efficiency; flash concentration of H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ using waste heat from Bunsen reaction, prevention of H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ vaporization from a distillation column by introduction of H$$_{2}$$SO$$_{4}$$ solution, and I$$_{2}$$ condensation heat recovery by direct contact heat exchange in the HI distillation column. A simulation of material and heat balance showed hydrogen of about 31,900 Nm$$^{3}$$/h was produced by 170 MW heat from the GTHTR300C. A process thermal efficiency of 50.2% was achievable with incorporation of the innovative techniques and several high performance components expected in future R&D.

A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction-acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys. Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. The laser pulse of $$<$$10 J laser energy, 36 fs pulse width, and the contrast level of $$sim$$ 10$$^{10}$$ from 200 TW class Ti:sapphire J-KAREN laser system at JAEA is used in the experiment. Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated. This is achieved by the high intensity laser field of $$sim$$10$$^{21}$$Wcm$$^{-2}$$ interacting with the solid density target. The demonstrated iron ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M) is difficult to be achieved by the conventional heavy ion source technique in the accelerators.

Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated with a 200 TW femtosecond high-intensity laser irradiating a micron-thick Al foil with Fe impurity on the surface. An energetic low-emittance high-density beam of heavy ions with a large charge-to-mass ratio can be obtained, which is useful for many applications, such as a compact radio isotope source in combination with conventional technology.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF) is an accelerator-based intense neutron source for fusion reactor materials development. Each one of the two accelerator modules needs to have a capability to provide the 40MeV/125mA deuteron beam continuously. Although the technology to produce the 7MeV/100mA proton beam is already verified using 350 MHz linac in the past, an engineering study using a prototype is necessary to verify the performance of IFMIF 175 MHz deuteron linac, and Engineering Validation Phase (EVP) is planned for this purpose. Some critical design parameters, like final and transition energies of linacs or RF source characteristics, are needed to be optimised for the prototype. As it is also important to verify the essential component technology, e.g. ion source, RFQ beam matching, rf system components, etc., the present status and expected results of such undergoing verification tests are described. An integrated concept of prototype accelerator is shown as a Japanese proposal for EVP to provide for the international discussion.

Japanese contributions to ITER Engineering Design Activity are presented, together with an introduction of the objectives and design of the ITER whose program have been carried out through the international collaboration by EU, Japan, Russian Federation and the USA. New technologies have been produced through the development, fabrication and testing of scalable models in the fields of superconducting magnet, reactor structure with vacuum vessel, high-heat-flux plasma facing component, neutral beam injector, high-power mm-wave generator and so on. As major contributions from Japan, development and testing results of a 13-T, 640-MJ, Nb$$_{3}$$Sn pulsed magnet, a 18-degree sector of vacuum vessel with a height of 15 m and a width of 9 m, CFC armors to CuCrZr cooling tube that withstood 20 MW/m$$^{2}$$, a 31 mA/cm$$^{2}$$ negative ion beam source, a 1-MeV beam-accelerator, a 1-MW 170-GHz gyrotron were described.
