High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors; JSME Series in Thermal and Nuclear Power Generation, Vol.5, 464 Pages, 2021/02
As a general overview of the research and development of a High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) in JAEA, this book describes the achievements by the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR) on the designs, key component technologies such as fuel, reactor internals, high temperature components, etc., and operational experience such as rise-to-power tests, high temperature operation at 950C, safety demonstration tests, etc. In addition, based on the knowledge of the HTTR, the development of designs and component technologies such as high performance fuel, helium gas turbine and hydrogen production by IS process for commercial HTGRs are described. These results are very useful for the future development of HTGRs. This book is published as one of a series of technical books on fossil fuel and nuclear energy systems by the Power Energy Systems Division of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Measured charge-state distribution established the equilibrium at a target thickness of 10 g/cm and this remained unchanged until a maximum target thickness of 98 g/cm. The equilibrium charge-state distribution, the equilibrium mean charge-state, and the width and skewness of the equilibrium distribution were compared with predictions using existing semi-empirical formulae as well as simulation results, including the ETACHA code. It was found that charge-state distributions, mean charge states, and distribution widths for C, C, and C incident ions merged into quasi-equilibrium values at a target thickness of 5.7 g/cm in the pre-equilibrium region and evolved simultaneously to the "real equilibrium" values for all of the initial charge states, including C and C ions. Two kinds of simulation, ETACHA and solution of rate equations taking only single electron transfers into account, were used, and both of them reproduced the measured charge evolution qualitatively. The quasi-equilibrium behavior could be reproduced with the ETACHA code, but not with solution of elementary rate equations.

We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as and scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to collisions.

The mission of NCT is to establish high beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. The machine flexibility and mobility is pursued in aspect ratio and shape controllability, feedback control of resistive wall modes, wide current and pressure profile control capability for the demonstration of the high-b steady state.

The machine design is carried out to investigate the capability for the flexibility in aspect ratio and shape controllability for the demonstration of the high-beta steady state operation with nation-wide collaboration, in parallel with ITER towards DEMO. Two designs are proposed and assessed with respect to the physics requirements such as confinement, stability, current drive, divertor, and energetic particle confinement. The operation range in the aspect ratio and the plasma shape is widely enhanced in consistent with the sufficient divertor pumping. Evaluations of the plasma performance towards the determination of machine design are presented.

For the lightly B-doped diamonds, the B 2-density of states (DOS) in the valence band were enhanced with a steep-edge-feature near the Fermi level, and localized acceptor levels, characteristic of semiconductors, were clearly observed both in B 2- and C 2-DOS in the conduction bands. For the heavily B-doped diamonds, the localized acceptor levels developed into extended energy levels and new energy levels were generated to form an extended conduction band structure which overlapped with the valence band. Thus, this clarified that the metallic energy band structure is actually formed by heavy boron doping. Such valence and conduction band structures observed by soft X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy well accounted for the electrical properties of the B-doped diamonds.

An optimization of current profile is a key issue for attaining higher plasma performance in Tokamak, such as stabilization of neo-classical tearing mode (NTM) and control of internal transport barrier (ITB). In JT-60U, a high power electron cyclotron heating (ECH) system at 110 GHz has been developed for local plasma heating and current drive. We have demonstrated the technical feasibility of the antenna which can scan EC beam in both toroidal and poloidal directions. The toroidal scan enabled co- and counter- current drive and also pure plasma heating. An automatic stabilization of the NTM was demonstrated by means of current drive at the location of magnetic island using a feedback control of poloidal beam angle. The total injected power has been extended to 2.8 MW for 3.6 sec and each gyrotron delivers ~ 1 MW for 5 sec. This world record of the injection energy was attained by an upgrade of the gyrotron using RF absorber in the beam tunnel to suppress the parasitic oscillation and improvement of the transmission efficiency of the waveguide system.

In this case, the highly excited states were formed by electron capture processes. We have studied collision processes of high-energy highly charged ions with a gas target using zero-degree electron spectroscopy at the tandem accelerator of JAERI, Tokai. In the present, we have measured Auger and C-K electron spectra from highly excited states produced by 1-3 MeV/u O (q=3-5) + He collisions, where the highly excited states in Oq+ ions were formed by electron excitation. We have compared and discussed the Auger and C-K electron spectra obtained by electron-capture and electron-excitation processes. It is found that the C-K spectra for high-energy Oq+ ions show relatively low-l states and the Auger spectra also have different structures from those for low-energy highly charged Oq+ ions.

Experiments on lower hybrid current drive in JT-60 haven shown a large non-inductive current up to 3.5MA, high current drive efficiency of 3.6x1019m-2A/W. Basic studies on LH waves in JT-60 have contributed to understand current drive physics. Significant progress in neutral beam current drive has been made in JT-60 by testing the performance of negative ion based NBI (N-NBI). The CD efficiency of ~1.5x1019m-2A /W, and N-NB driven current of ~1MA have been demonstrated in N-NBCD. Strongly localized driven current by electron cyclotron current drive was identified with a fundamental O-mode scheme. Efficiency of 0.5x1019m-2A/W and EC driven current of 0.2MA were achieved and suppression of neo-classical tearing mode was demonstrated. Based on these developments, two integrated steady-state operation scenarios were developed in JT-60, which are reversed magnetic shear (R/S) plasmas and high bp ELMy H-mode. In these operation regimes, discharges have been sustained near the steady-state current profile under full non-inductive current drive. High performance plasmas with a high nDotETio and at high normalized density were also produced under fully non-inductive condition in high bp ELMy H-mode and R/S mode.
