Identification of potential biomarkers of radiation exposure in blood cells by capillary electrophoresis time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Biodosimetry is a useful method to estimate the personal dose after unexpected ionizing radiation exposure. Studies have been reported that metabolites are useful markers for biodosimetry. However, these studies only focused on non-cellular biofluid (e.g., serum, plasma, urine, or saliva). Blood cell metabolites may reflect the health status or environmental stresses differently than metabolites of plasma. Here, we report changes in the metabolites of blood cells after X-ray irradiation of C57BL/6J mice. Blood cell metabolites were measured by capillary electrophoresis time-of-flight mass spectrometry. We found that 106 metabolites were changed significantly after irradiation. We identified that 2'-deoxycytidine, choline, and N6-acetyllysine as potentially useful discriminating markers of radiation exposure. These metabolites have not been reported previously. Furthermore, we established a prediction panel of the exposure dose using stepwise regression analysis. These findings suggest that blood cell metabolites may be useful biomarkers to estimate exposure doses during unexpected radiation incidents.

The information exchange meeting on HTGR and hydrogen production technology between Korea Atomic Energy research Institute (KAERI) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) was held in the Oarai Research and Development Center of JAEA on November 5th - 6th, 2015 based on the cooperative research program of the KAERI-JAEA implementation of "Development of HTGR and Nuclear Hydrogen Technology" under "The Implementation of Cooperative Program in the Field of Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy between KAERI and JAEA." In order to facilitate efficient technology development on the HTGR and nuclear hydrogen by the IS process, both sides mutually showed the present status and future plan of the research and development on the HTGR and nuclear hydrogen technology, respectively. This proceeding summarizes all materials of the presented technical discussions on the HTGR and hydrogen production technology based on the open documents as well as the meeting briefing including collaboration items.

We report on the event structure and double helicity asymmetry ($$A_{LL}$$) of jet production in longitudinally polarized $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. Photons and charged particles were measured by the PHENIX experiment. Event structure was compared with the results from PYTHIA event generator. The production rate of reconstructed jets is satisfactorily reproduced with the next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculation. We measured $$A_{LL}$$ = -0.0014 $$pm$$ 0.0037 at the lowest $$P_T$$ bin and -0.0181 $$pm$$ 0.0282 at the highest $$P_T$$ bin. The measured $$A_{LL}$$ is compared with the predictions that assume various $$Delta G(x)$$ distributions.

Transverse momentum distributions and yields for $$pi^{pm}, K^{pm}, p$$, and $$bar{p}$$ in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV at midrapidity are measured by the PHENIX experiment at the RHIC. We present the inverse slope parameter, mean transverse momentum, and yield per unit rapidity at each energy, and compare them to other measurements at different $$sqrt{s}$$ collisions. We also present the scaling properties such as $$m_T$$ and $$x_T$$ scaling and discuss the mechanism of the particle production in $$p + p$$ collisions. The measured spectra are compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations.

Measurements of electrons from the decay of open-heavy-flavor mesons have shown that the yields are suppressed in Au+Au collisions compared to expectations from binary-scaled $$p+p$$ collisions. Here we extend these studies to two particle correlations where one particle is an electron from the decay of a heavy flavor meson and the other is a charged hadron from either the decay of the heavy meson or from jet fragmentation. These measurements provide more detailed information about the interaction between heavy quarks and the quark-gluon matter. We find the away-side-jet shape and yield to be modified in Au+Au collisions compared to $$p+p$$ collisions.

The PHENIX experiment at RHIC has measured the invariant differential cross section for production of $$K^0_s$$, $$omega$$, $$eta'$$ and $$phi$$ mesons in $$p + p$$ collisions at $$sqrt{s}$$ = 200 GeV. The spectral shapes of all hadron transverse momentum distributions are well described by a Tsallis distribution functional form with only two parameters, $$n$$ and $$T$$, determining the high $$p_T$$ and characterizing the low $$p_T$$ regions for the spectra, respectively. The integrated invariant cross sections calculated from the fitted distributions are found to be consistent with existing measurements and with statistical model predictions.

Study on explosion characteristics of natural gas and methane in semi-open space for the HTTR hydrogen production system

It is important to grasp the explosion characteristics of object gases: natural gas and methane, in order to evaluate the influence of a gas explosion accident in the HTTR hydrogen production system on the reactor. Thus, we carried out explosion experiments of the object gases in semi-open space, and verified a numerical analysis code for the simulation of the explosion accident. It was confirmed that NG-air mixture or methane-air mixture in semi-open space didn't result in DDT although 10 g of C-4 explosive was used as an ignition source, and the numerical results agreed relatively with the experimental results. As a result, we could have the prospects for predicting the influence of the explosion accident on the reactor.
