Restoration of oxygen vacancies on an anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) surface with supersonic seeded oxygen molecular beam

Katsube, Daiki*; Ono, Shinya*; Inami, Eiichi*; Yoshigoe, Akitaka; Abe, Masayuki*

Vacuum and Surface Science, 65(11), p.526 - 530, 2022/11

The oxidation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$ (001) was investigated by synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy and supersonic O$$_{2}$$ beam (SSMB). The oxygen vacancies at the top surface and subsurface could be eliminated by the supply of hyperthermal oxygen molecules. Oxygen vacancies are present on the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) when it is untreated before transfer to a vacuum chamber. These vacancies, which are stable in the ambient condition, could also be effectively eliminated by using oxygen SSMB. This result is promising as a surface processing for various functional oxides.

We investigated the oxidation of oxygen vacancies at the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) using supersonic seeded molecular beam (SSMB) of oxygen. The oxygen vacancies at the top-surface and sub-surface could be eliminated by the supply of oxygen using an SSMB. These results indicate that the interstitial vacancies can be mostly assigned to oxygen vacancies, which can be effectively eliminated by using an oxygen SSMB. Oxygen vacancies are present on the surface of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) when it is untreated before transfer to a vacuum chamber. These vacancies, which are stable in the as-grown condition, could also be effectively eliminated using the oxygen SSMB.

Breeding of new ${it Chrysanthemum}$ cultivar "Aladdin 2" through stepwise improvements of cv. "Jimba" using ion beam re-irradiation

"Jimba" is a leading variety of white-flower chrysanthemum in Japan, although "Jimba" develops many axillary buds and also shows delayed flowering under a low temperature condition. Previously, we succeeded to produce new chrysanthemum variety "Aladdin" and "Imagine" that have a lesser number of axillary buds by ion beam irradiation. However, these varieties still show delayed flowering under a low temperature condition. In this study, we examined the effect of re-irradiation ofthese mutants by ion beams in improving flowering trait. The cultured leaves of "Aladdin" were irradiated with carbon ions and the regenerated plants were screened for the mutants that flowers earlier than the parental variety under a low temperature condition. Finally, we succeeded to produce new chrysanthemum variety "Aladdin 2" that develops a few axillary buds and shows early flowering traits. Thus, we demonstrated that the two important agronomic traits can be introduced by ion beam irradiation in a stepwise manner. The knowledge obtained in this study may be applicable for improving many kinds of plants.

Resonant X-ray diffraction experiments on CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ were performed at the Ce-$$L$$$$_{3}$$ absorption edge to study the states of quadrupolar ordering below the ferromagnetic transition temperature $$T_{rm C}$$ = 6.3 K. The magnetic structure of CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ was reported as a canted ferromagnetic structure with a canting angle of 51$$^circ$$. It has therefore been pointed out that the complex magnetic structure arises from the simultaneous ordering of quadrupole moments. We observed the azimuthal angle dependence of the diffraction intensity of the two forbidden reflections 003 and 104 reflections for both $$pi$$-$$pi$$' and $$pi$$-$$sigma$$' scattering processes. The results revealed that $$O$$$$_2$$$$^{0}$$-type antiferroquadrupolar ordering coexists with magnetic ordering. We infer that the magnetic structure of CePd$$_3$$S$$_4$$ is not a canted structure but a ferrimagnetic structure and that the quadrupole moment is also a primary-order parameter.

Preventive countermeasure of air purge tube blocking using a humidifier in the Tokai Reprocessing Plant

Nihon Hozen Gakkai Dai-6-Kai Gakujutsu Koenkai Yoshishu, p.506 - 509, 2009/08

The air purge method is applied to measure a liquid level and its density of a radioactive solution in a tank in the Tokai reprocessing plant. In this method, air purge tubes soaked in nitric acid solution are often blocked by depositing salt of nitrate. Dried air is usually used for the air purge system and this can be one of the reasons for generating salt on the tube point. Therefore, a series of experiment using a humidifier to humidify the air has been performed to prevent the blocking with salt, and the effect has been experimentally confirmed.

NOx-based gases emitted from engines and plants are an important issue from an environmental perspective. For the detoxification of NO, it is important to understand its reactivity and reaction mechanisms. The reactivity of anatase TiO$$_{2}$$(001) which is a highly active photocatalyst was studied by using NO supersonic molecular beams and synchrotron radiation XPS. It was found that the N1s peak was observed, indicating that the surface without surface cleaning reacts with NO molecules.
