Rapid analysis of $$^{90}$$Sr in bone and tooth samples of cattle were achieved by an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) coupled with mass shift and solid phase extraction techniques. Limit of detection (LOD) in the ICP-MS measurement of 0.1 g samples was lower than that of the radioactivity measurement. Analytical time of the ICP-MS method was reduced from 20 days to 11 hours, compared with the radiometric method. Therefore, the ICP-MS method can be rapid and useful procedure of $$^{90}$$Sr in small bone and tooth samples derived from terrestrial animals.

We have developed ${it spatiotemporal}$ measurement and analysis techniques in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To begin with, time-division depth profiles of gate stacked film interfaces have been achieved by NAP-HARPES (Near Ambient Pressure Hard X-ray Angle-Resolved Photo Emission Spectroscopy) data. We then have promoted our methods to quickly perform peak fittings and depth profiling from time-division ARPES data, which enables us to realize 4D-XPS analysis. It is found that the traditional maximum entropy method (MEM) combined with Jackknife averaging of sparse modeling in NAP-HARPES data is effective to perform dynamic measurement of depth profiles with high precision.

Toward the establishment of a common approach to determine the radioactivity concentrations in dismantling wastes arising from research reactors, radionuclide concentrations in the reactor structure materials of aluminum, carbon steel, shield concrete, and graphite of TRIGA Mark II reactor at Rikkyo University, Japan, were evaluated with both radiochemical analysis and theoretical calculation. The measured nuclides by the radiochemical analysis were $$^{3}$$H, $$^{60}$$Co, and $$^{63}$$Ni in aluminum, $$^{3}$$H, $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{63}$$Ni, and $$^{152}$$Eu in carbon steel, $$^{3}$$H, $$^{60}$$Co, and $$^{152}$$Eu in shield concrete, and $$^{3}$$H, $$^{14}$$C, $$^{60}$$Co, $$^{63}$$Ni, and $$^{152}$$Eu in graphite. Neutron-flux distributions and neutron-induced activities were computed with DORT and ORIGEN-ARP codes, respectively. Using the results of material composition analysis, radioactivity concentrations were conservatively predicted with good accuracy except for graphite material.

Proceedings of 2017 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2017) (CD-ROM), 7 Pages, 2017/04

A near surface disposal for low-level radioactive waste (LLW) generated from commercial nuclear power plants (NPP) is operating in Japan. However, the disposal of LLW from other nuclear facilities and radioisotope utilization facilities has not yet been implemented. Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) plans to implement the near surface disposal. In order to be disposed of these wastes, it must be confirmed by the regulator that each waste package (radioactive waste solidified with filling materials, such as cement, in a container by a regulated method is termed a waste package) conforms to technical standards that aim for safe disposal. JAEA has studied reasonable confirmation methods to demonstrate the conformity of the waste package to the technical standard as NPP operators have studied it. This report describes the outline of our activities focused on development of the confirmation method applicable to radioactive wastes from research facilities.

Three kinds of Fe-based model alloys, Fe-0.018 atomic percent (at.%) Cu, Fe-0.53at.%Cu, and Fe-1.06at.%Cu were irradiated with 2 MeV electrons up to the dose of 2$$times$$10$$^{-5}$$ dpa at 250$$^{circ}$$C. After the irradiation, the increase in Vickers hardness and the decrease in electrical resistivity were observed. The increase in hardness by electron irradiation is proportional to the product of the Cu contents and the square root of the electron dose. The decrease in electrical resistivity is proportional to the product of the square of Cu contents and the electron dose. Cu clustering in the materials with electron irradiation and thermal aging was observed by means of the three dimensional atom probes (3D-AP). The change in Vickers hardness and electrical resistivity is well correlated with the volume fraction of Cu clusters.

Safety design approach for external events in Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor

Yamano, Hidemasa; Kubo, Shigenobu; Tani, Akihiro*; Nishino, Hiroyuki; Sakai, Takaaki

Proceedings of 2012 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP '12) (CD-ROM), p.813 - 825, 2012/06

This paper describes a safety design approach for external events in the design study of Japan Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor, in parallel to the approach for internal events which is conformed to the defence-in-depth principle in IAEA. An emphasis is the addition of new eventcategory that has to be considered in design, i.e., introduction of "design extension condition (DEC)." In this study, the DEC category was extended to the external events. In addition to seismic design, other external events such as tsunami, strong wind and abnormal temperature were addressed in this study. From a wide variety of external events consisting of natural hazards and human-induced ones, a screening method was developed in terms of sitting, consequence, frequency to select representative events. Design approaches for these events were categorized on the probabilistic, statistical and deterministic basis.

Gloveboxes used for plutonium fuel development and fabrication are eventually dismantled for replacement or decommissioning. Since equipment interior and the inner surface of gloveboxes are contaminated in radioactive materials, glovebox dismantling work is performed by workers wearing an air fed suit with mechanical tools in a plastic enclosure system to control the spread of contamination. Various improvements of enclosure system are implemented including modification of the rooms to decontaminate and undress the air fed suit and introduction of inflammable filter and safety film near the size reduction workspace against fire. We describe the countermeasures deployed in the enclosure system against potential hazards and how these devices work in the real dismantling activities.

Lithium titanate (Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$) is one of the most promising candidates among tritium breeding materials because of its good tritium release. Addition of H$$_{2}$$ to inert sweep gas has been proposed for enhancing the tritium release from tritium breeding materials. However, the mass of Li$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ was decreased with time in the hydrogen atmosphere. It is assumed that the mass decrease indicates the loss of the oxygen contained in the sample caused by the change from Ti $$^{4+}$$ to Ti $$^{3+}$$, and that the partial pressures of Li-containing species were increased in the hydrogen atmosphere. In order to decrease the mass-change at high temperature, advanced tritium breeding material with added Li should be developed to improve the physical and chemical stability in hydrogen atmosphere. In the case of the Li$$_{2+x}$$TiO$$_{3+y}$$ samples used by the present study, LiOHH$$_{2}$$O and H$$_{2}$$TiO$$_{3}$$ were proportionally mixed with the molar ratio Li/Ti of either 2.0 and 2.2. These samples are designated as L20 (Li/Ti = 2.0) and L22 (Li/Ti = 2.2), respectively. The results of XRD measurement showed that the phases in advanced tritium breeding material were as follows. L22 existed as non-stoichiometric compound Li$$_{2+x}$$TiO$$_{3+y}$$.

Self-tuning control of balloon internal pressure in ileus tube

Seki, Takeshi*; Naganawa, Akihiro*; Oka, Kiyoshi; Yoshino, Junji*

Keisoku Jido Seigyo Gakkai Sangyo Rombunshu, 10(2), p.7 - 16, 2011/05

Enteroscopy was usually performed by the double balloon or capsule endoscopes. However, it is difficult to use these endoscopes in patients who suffer from intestinal obstruction and adhesion. We have developed a new endoscope that can be used in patients who suffer from these problems; the instrument consists of an ileus tube and an optical fiberscope (diameter 1.1 mm). The entire small intestine can be observed by controlling the internal pressure of the balloon in the ileus tube and by pulling the tube out at a constant speed. In our previous study, we developed an internal pressure control device that consists of a balloon attached to an ileus tube and a medical syringe. We also verified the control performance of this device. In this study, we have designed a new two-degrees-of-freedom control system having self-tuning capabilities that enhances the control performance for various types of syringes doctors use usually. The effects of the proposed method are illustrated by the experiment. The obtained results show that balloon pressure in the reference response satisfactorily tracks the output of the reference model and can be settled within $$pm$$2% in steady state. In addition, the disturbance rejection properties of the PID control method were affected by the changes in balloon pressure, but this problem can be solved by using the proposed control system.

Control of balloon internal pressure for ileus tube using a syringe

Seki, Takeshi; Naganawa, Akihiro*; Oka, Kiyoshi; Ishikawa, Shinji*; Yoshino, Junji*

Nihon Kikai Gakkai Rombunshu, C, 76(766), p.1645 - 1647, 2010/06

Recently, by development of double balloon and capsule endoscopes, small intestinal whole area observation was enabled. However, it is difficult to use these endoscopes in patients with intestinal obstruction and adhesion. We developed a new endoscope that can be used in patients with intestinal obstruction and adhesion; this instrument consists of an ileus tube and an optical fiberscope (diameter, 1.1 mm). The complete observation of small intestinal is to be planned by controlling internal pressure of balloon in ileus tube, and pulling the tube out at constant speed. In our previous study, we have developed an internal pressure control device which consists of a balloon of ileus and an industrial cylinder, and we confirmed the utility. In this study, we developed a new control device combined with a general medical syringe, which enables to be sterilized easily and also to give less anxiety to patients. As the results of performance experiment of the device, the control accuracy was within $$pm$$0.5% error. Furthermore, in a disturbance response, the pressure fluctuation was limited down to 12%, compared with a case without any control.

Development and basic study for lesion size measuring system on an endoscopic image

Oka, Kiyoshi; Seki, Takeshi*; Naito, Takehito*; Watanabe, Shinya*; Wakabayashi, Takao*; Naganawa, Akihiro*; Inui, Kazuo*; Yoshino, Junji*

Nihon Gazo Igaku Zasshi, 28(1), p.12 - 24, 2010/05

Focusing on the measurement function loaded on our rigid-typed endoscope for the fetal surgery treatment, we proposed that its combination with a generally used digestive endoscope enabled calibration of lesion size in stomach. While adding the function, with which the target size is to be easily measured, on the endoscope, we simplified the system structure as much as possible. We also tried to minimize the total cost by using the generally used endoscope, instead of making it from scratch. Combining another development, the composite-type optical fiberscope with diameter of 1.1mm, with a generally used endoscope, we proposed the following as the features: (1)acquisition of fiberscope image, (2)laser irradiation for treatments, (3)applying the real time measurement function of distance and blood flow by semiconductor laser to the generally used endoscope. We have operated the clinical study to the gastric wall of person with no health problem, using this system and confirmed it was available for practical use.
