A Fluorometric skin-interfaced microfluidic device and smartphone imaging module for ${{it in situ}}$ quantitative analysis of sweat chemistry

The rich composition of solutes and metabolites in sweat and its relative ease of collection upon excretion from skin pores make this class of biofluid an attractive candidate for point of care analysis. Here, we present a complementary approach that exploits fluorometric sensing modalities integrated into a soft, skin-interfaced microfluidic system which, when paired with a simple smartphone-based imaging module, allows for in-situ measurement of important biomarkers in sweat. A network array of microchannels and a collection of microreservoirs pre-filled with fluorescent probes that selectively react with target analytes in sweat (e.g. probes), enable quantitative, rapid analysis. Field studies on human subjects demonstrate the ability to measure the concentrations of chloride, sodium and zinc in sweat, with accuracy that matches that of conventional laboratory techniques.

Wideband low-output-impedance RF system for the second harmonic cavity in the ISIS synchrotron has been developed by the collaboration between ANL (US), KEK (Japan) and RAL (UK). Low output impedance is realized by the feedback from plate to grid of the final triode amplifier, resulting in less than 30 ohms over a wide frequency range of 2.7 - 6.2 MHz. The vacuum tubes in the driver and final stages are both operated in class A. High power test was performed with a ferrite-loaded second harmonic cavity, where the bias current was swept at 50 Hz repetition rate. The maximum voltage of 12 kV peak per accelerating gap was obtained stably at earlier period of an acceleration cycle. A beam test with this system is planned at the ISIS synchrotron soon.

Development of ceramic liner for FBR building

To develop a ceramic liner, a selection test of materials, an improvement test of selected material, and a feasibility test of the liner have been conducted.in the selection test, fifty commercially available high temperature cement and ceramics were subjected to thermal shock test (tst), sodium exposure test(set), and sodium flame exposure test (sfet). From test results, alumina/silicon-carbide (Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-sic)mixture base castable refractory was selected in consideration of material cost, and material availability for a simpler liner construction in the buildings. The selected material was subjected to the improvement test. from the test, proper weight fractions of additives such as alumina cement and silica were determined. Drying conditions were also determined. Finally, a sodium burning pan made of concrete whose inner surfaces were covered with the improved Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$-sic base castable refractory was fabricated and was used for a sodium burning test.
