Measurement of displacement cross section for proton in the kinetic energy range from 0.4 GeV to 3 GeV

R&D of the beam window is crucial in the ADS, which serves as a partition between the accelerator and the target region. Although the displacement per atom (DPA) is used to evaluate the damage on the window, experimental data on the displacement cross section is scarce in the energy region above 20 MeV. We started to measure the displacement cross section for the protons in the energy region between 0.4 to 3 GeV. The displacement cross section can be derived by resistivity change divided by the proton flux and the resistivity change per Frankel pair on cryo-cooled sample to maintain damage. Experiments were conducted at the 3 GeV proton synchrotron at the J-PARC Center, and aluminum and copper was used as samples. As a result of comparison between the present experiment and the calculation of the NRT model, which is widely used for calculation of the displacement cross section, it was found that the calculation of the NRT model overestimated the experiment by about 3 times.

To estimate the structural damages of materials in accelerator facilities, displacement per atom (dpa) is widely employed as a damage index, calculated based on the displacement cross-section obtained using a calculation model. Although dpa is applied as standard, the experimental data of the displacement cross-section for a proton in the energy region above 20 MeV are scarce. Among the calculation models, difference of about factor 8 exist, so that the experimental data of the cross-section are crucial to validate the model. To obtain the displacement cross-section, we conducted experiments at J-PARC. The displacement cross-section of copper and iron was successfully obtained for a proton projectile with the kinetic energies, 0.4 - 3 GeV. The results were compared with those obtained using the widely utilized Norgertt-Robinson-Torrens (NRT) model and the athermal-recombination-corrected (arc) model based on molecular dynamics. It was found that the NRT model overestimates the present displacement cross-section by 3.5 times. The calculation results obtained using with the arc model based on the Nordlund parameter show remarkable agreement with the experimental data. It can be concluded that the arc model must be employed for the dpa calculation for the damage estimation of copper and iron.

As a summer holiday practical training 2018, the feasibility study for nuclear design of a nuclear battery using HTTR core was carried out. As a result, it is become clear that the continuous operations for about 30 years at 2 MW, about 25 years at 3 MW, about 18 years at 4 MW, about 15 years at 5 MW are possible. As an image of thermal design, the image of the nuclear battery consisting a cooling system with natural convection and a power generation system with no moving equipment is proposed. Further feasibility study to confirm the feasibility of nuclear battery will be carried out in training of next fiscal year.

In Phase I of the "Feasibility Studies on Commercialized Fast Reactor Cycle Systems (F/S)", an advanced loop type reactor has been selected as a promising concept of sodium-cooled reactor, which has a possibility to fulfill the design requirements of the F/S. In Phase II, design improvement for further cost reduction and the establishment of the plant concept has been performed. In this study, reactor core design and large-scale plant design have been performed by adopting the modified fuel assembly with inner duct structure and double-wall straight tube steam generator (SG), which concepts were chosen at the interim review of FY 2003. For this SG, safety logics have been studied and the structural concept has been established. And the plant designs improving the in-service inspection (ISI) and repair capability have been performed. Furthermore, elaborate confirmation of the design has been performed reflecting the development of elemental technology, back-up concepts have been proposed. Besides, cost reduction measures have been studied by reducing reactor grade materials, introducing autonomous standardizations, simplifying the design due to deregulation and adopting systemized standards for BOP and NSSS. From now on, reflecting the results of elemental experiments, in-depth design studies and examination of critical issues will be carried out and the plant concept will accomplish in preparation for the final evaluation in Phase II.

This report summarizes the results of the design study on the sodium-cooled large-scale reactor performed in JFY2003, which is the third year of Phase 2. In the JFY2003 design study, critical subjects related to safety, structural integrity and thermal hydraulics which found in the last fiscal year has been examined and the plant concept has been modified. Furthermore, fundamental specifications of main systems and components have been set and economy has been evaluated. In addition, as the interim evaluation of the candidate concept of the FBR fuel cycle is to be conducted, cost effectiveness and achievability for the development goal were evaluated and the data of the three large-scale reactor candidate concepts were prepared.

Based on the concept of a plant consisting of four modules with a capacity of 750 MWe each, which has been established by the end of FY2002, a concept of the entire plant was proposed, reflecting the modifications related to the high internal conversion type core, the double-wall straight tube steam generator (SG), and the fuel storage system. Concept studies were also performed to overcome the drawbacks of the sodium and to achieve in-service inspection and repair as easily as in light water reactor. Furthermore, feasibility studies were carried out to confirm the design, which included safety, thermal-hydraulics and the structures of the primary reactor auxiliary cooling system and the double-wall straight tube SG. A prospect for realization of this plant concept has been obtained through the evaluation results. In addition, as the interim evaluation of the candidate concepts of the FBR fuel cycle is to be conducted, cost effectiveness and achievability for the development goal were evaluated and the data of the three medium-scale reactor candidate concepts were prepared.

The attractive concepts for Sodium-, lead-bismuth-, helium- and water-cooled FBRs have been created through using typical plant features and employing advanced technologies. Efforts on evaluating technological prospects of feasibility have been paid for these concepts. Also, it was comfirmed if these concepts satisfy design requierments of capability and performance presumed in the feasibilty study on commertialization of Fast Breeder Reactor Systems. As results, it was concluded that the selection of sodium-cooled reactor was most rational for practical use of FBR technologies in 2015.

Quadrupole and hexadecapole ordering in DyB$$_2$$C$$_2$$; Direct observation with resonant X-ray diffraction

Direct evidence of the spatial ordering of Dy 4$$f$$ quadrupole and hexadecapole moments in DyB$$_2$$C$$_2$$ is demonstrated by resonant X-ray diffraction enhanced by an electric quadrupole event ($$E$$2 resonance) at the Dy L$$_{III}$$ absorption edge. The diffraction data show that the structural phase transition at $$T$$$$_{Q}$$ = 24.7 K is accompanied by a reduction in the symmetry of the Dy site to 2/$$m$$, from 4/$$m$$, and the spatial ordering of the time-even Dy multipoles with A$$_{g}$$ character. Below $$T$$$$_{Q}$$ the crystal structure is described by the space group $$P$$4$$_2$$/$$mnm$$ and Dy ions occupy sites (4$$c$$). The distortion at T$$_{Q}$$ involves the lattice occupied by B and C ions, and it amounts to a buckling of B-C planes that are normal to the two-fold rotation axis of 2/$$m$$. An immediately plausible model of low-energy Dy states correlates data on the specific heat, our X-ray diffraction signals, and magnetic ordering below 15.3 K which has been observed in magnetic neutron diffraction.

Measurement of DPA cross-section of 0.4 - 3 GeV proton at J-PARC

For a damage evaluation of targets and beam window for a high-intensity proton accelerator facility, DPA based on a model calculation of a cross section of displacement per atom (DPA). However, the models are not sufficiently validated since there are almost no data induced by protons above 20 MeV. Thus, we measure DPA cross section for various measurement at J-PARC by using 0.4-3.0 GeV protons. DPA cross section can be obtained by dividing a resistivity increase after proton irradiation by the resistivity per Frenkel pairs. In this measurement, the sample were placed onto a front edge of a two-stage 4K GM cryocooler (Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.). In this measurement, an copper wire (diameter 0.25 mm) that was annealed by 800$$^{circ}$$C was employed. The experiment is performed with low-intensity beam at 3NBT line where the proton beam is transported from 3 GeV Synchrotron (RCS) to the Material and Life science Facility (MLF). We started vacuum pumping after an installation and we confirmed that the pressure level achieved the one where the beam can be transported. The achieved temperatures were 4 K around the front edge of the cryocooler and 20 K around the sample due to radiation heat. In this talk, we report a current status of experiment and discuss an effect of a beam profile to the DPA cross section.
