Makimura, Shunsuke*; Matoba, Shiro*; Sunagawa, Hikaru*; Naoe, Takashi; Wakui, Takashi; Ishida, Taku*; Matsubara, Tsurayuki*; Fukao, Yoshinori*; Takahashi, Hitoshi*; Watanabe, Hiroaki*; et al.

Proceedings of 71st ICFA Advanced Beam Dynamics workshop on High-Intensity and High-Brightness Hadron Beams (HB2025) (Internet), p.359 - 363, 2025/10

In modern proton accelerators, the survivability of beam-intercepting devices, such as targets, beam windows and beam dumps, under intense beam irradiation is a key factor limiting the achievement of higher beam power. This article introduces the challenges faced by the secondary particle production targets and beam windows at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), and the developments undertaken to overcome these challenges.

Steam used for process and air conditioning in each facility at the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Engineering Institute is generated by a water tube boiler installed in the Institute's central control room and supplied to each facility via underground trenches. There are three steam supply pipelines (A, B, and C) to each facility, with two of these (A and B) designated for the reprocessing facility. The steam pipelines, including expansion joints and steam traps, are covered with insulation. The two steam pipelines for the reprocessing facility (A and B) are laid parallel, creating a structure that makes inspection and maintenance difficult. In particular, the expansion joints are spaced very closely between the A and B lines, making insulation removal difficult, which has been a challenge in performing visual inspections of the expansion joint bodies. This paper reports on the features and effects of an improved insulation system designed to allow for easy removal and installation.

High entropy alloys tend to combine high strength with good ductility due to their inherent properties. This material is considered as a promising new material not only for higher-performance future general industrial applications, but also for increasing the durability and range of application of radiation-affected equipment in nuclear and radiation environments, and has been rapidly gaining attention in recent years. In this study, two types of high-entropy alloys (Fe-Mn-V-Cr-Al-C and Fe-Si-W-Cr-V) composed of low-radioactive elements (without Ni and Co) were prepared and their basic properties were evaluated for application as new functional materials to be used under radiation in high-energy accelerator target system components, nuclear reactors, fusion reactors, etc. and their basic properties were evaluated. The two materials under development in this study have unique properties in the following respects. The former is expected to be developed as a basic research for high-power motor materials as a new structural material and magnetic properties sharing the features of high strength and low radiation. On the other hand, the latter is expected to be applied as a new functional material in new engineering fields by mixing tungsten, which has the highest melting point among metallic elements, with vanadium, which has a considerably higher melting point, to raise the melting point of the alloy and to design an alloy with high strength.

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $$a_{mu}=(g-2)/2$$ and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $$d_{mu}$$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $$a_{mu}$$ and $$d_{mu}$$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon g-2 experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $$a_{mu}$$ is a statistical uncertainty of 450 parts per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. The goal for EDM is a sensitivity of $$1.5times10^{-21}$$ e$$cdot$$cm.

Thermoelectric devices based on the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) were irradiated with gamma ($$gamma$$) rays with the total dose of around 3$$times$$10$$^{5}$$ Gy in order to investigate the $$gamma$$-radiation resistance of the devices. To demonstrate this, Pt/Ni$$_{0.2}$$Zn$$_{0.3}$$Fe$$_{2.5}$$O$$_{4}$$/Glass and Pt/Bi$$_{0.1}$$Y$$_{2.9}$$Fe$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$/Gd$$_{3}$$Ga$$_{5}$$O$$_{12}$$ SSE devices were used. We confirmed that the thermoelectric, magnetic, and structural properties of the SSE devices are not affected by the $$gamma$$-ray irradiation. This result demonstrates that SSE devices are applicable to thermoelectric generation even in high radiation environments.

The effect of the annealing on the crystal and local structures of doped zirconia was investigated by multi-probe technique using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction, and first principles calculation. It was revealed that the annealing process enhances the periodic distortion of some zirconia compounds by Rietveld/ maximum entropy methods applied to the SR-X-ray and neutron diffractions. In addition, the combined X-ray absorption spectroscopy and first-principles calculations results showed the ZrO$$_{8}$$ polyhedra in zirconia were distorted by the annealing. Those results indicate that the degradation of oxide ionic conductivity by the annealing was related to the periodic distortion in zirconia.

The effects of the annealing process on the crystal and local structures of the doped zirconia were investigated by Rietveld refinements of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction, maximum entropy method (MEM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and first principles calculation (FPC). This study reveals that the crystal structures of the sintered and annealed ((Zr$$_{0.85}$$Y$$_{0.15}$$)O$$_{2}$$ and (Zr$$_{0.81}$$Sc$$_{0.18}$$Ce$$_{0.01}$$)O$$_{2}$$) are cubic with the space ${it Fm}$-3${it m}$ having large atomic displacement parameters (${it U}$). For the annealed (Zr$$_{0.85}$$Y$$_{0.15}$$)O$$_{2}$$, the ${it U}$ values reduce, and the electrons around the Zr/oxide ion sites gather at the center of each site. On the other hand, the annealed (Zr$$_{0.81}$$Sc$$_{0.18}$$Ce$$_{0.01}$$)O$$_{2}$$ shows the opposite tendency to that of the annealed (Zr$$_{0.85}$$Y$$_{0.15}$$)O$$_{2}$$.

Considering the safe, long-term sequestration of energy byproducts, such as radioactive waste, one of the important parameters is the groundwater flow velocity through the void of rock masses and/or fractures. In this research work, two-dimensional seepage flow analyses, using the authors' proposed 2D model, with considering the inertia term, are carried out for single fracture permeability tests under conditions which allow for the application of the cubic law. In comparing the results of the experiments with the numerical simulations, the results of the simulation show a good agreement with the experimental results. From these simulation results, the fracture flow of an inhomogeneous structure is discussed, along with the local Reynolds number, and the resistance through the fracture geometry is considered. Consequently, under the condition of a mean Reynolds number of less than 1.0, the inertia terms cannot affect on the fracture flow, but the hydraulic resistance can affect.

Development of grout injection model to single fracture in considering inertia term and its application on parallel plate experiments

Kishida, Kiyoshi*; Kobayashi, Kenichiro*; Hosoda, Takashi*; Fujita, Tomoo; Kishi, Hirokazu; Kuzuha, Yuji; Nobuto, Jun*

Zairyo, 61(3), p.245 - 252, 2012/03

In this research work, the grout injection model of single fracture, in which non-Newtonian fluid and the inertia term are considered, has been developed. Then, the grout injection experiments of single fracture have been conducted and the numerical simulations have been also carried out. As compared our proposed model with past one, the remarkable difference in grout penetration could not be clearly observed. On the other hand, the difference in pressure at aperture entrance and penetration velocity of the grout could be clearly observed. Our proposed model could show the practical behavior against previous model. Moreover, it can be also confirmed that viscosity of grout material through the material experiments are differed with that through the parallel plate injection experiments.

Dependence of fracture geometry and spatial variation in pressure on hydraulic conductivity in rock fractures

Harmonising Rock Engineering and the Environment, p.1327 - 1330, 2011/10

Although it is generally known that a natural rock fracture indicates a complex aperture distribution, the fracture is an ideal representation of the parallel plate model. The cubic law is applied to evaluate the hydraulic properties of fractured rock. From several previous research works, it is known that the cubic law can be applied when the Reynolds number is less than 1.0 and that the advection term can basically be ignored in such fracture flows. In this research work, two-dimensional seepage flow analyses, using the authors' proposed 2D model which is considered with the advection term, are carried out for single fracture hydro-conductivity experiments under conditions which allow for the application of the cubic law. From the numerical results, the validity of the 2D model is discussed along with the local Reynolds number and the application of the cubic law.
