The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

Study on the predictive evaluation method for loads acting on roof and sidewall of cylindrical tank in nonlinear sloshing based on simplified equations

Ikesue, Shunichi*; Morita, Hideyuki*; Ishii, Hidekazu*; Sago, Hiromi*; Yokoi, Shinobu*; Yamamoto, Tomohiko

Proceedings of ASME 2021 Pressure Vessels and Piping Conference (PVP 2021) (Internet), 8 Pages, 2021/07

In this paper, a new method is proposed for the nonlinear sloshing condition of a cylindrical tank, which can evaluate the vertical load acting on the roof and the horizontal load acting on the sidewall. This method is a combination of simplified equations for the liquid surface level and velocity proposed in the past study and the new pressure model modified from the existing model. A long calculation time as CFD analysis is not needed, because this method is consisted of simplified equations. The validity of this method was confirmed by comparing them with the CFD and the test. And future issues on the improvement of this method were clarified from the result.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been implementing the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project in order to develop the comprehensive investigation techniques for the geological environment and the engineering techniques to construct a deep underground laboratory in crystalline rock. In the rock mechanical study in the MIU Project, the development of the evaluation method for the excavation damaged zone due to excavation of shafts and research galleries is one of the important issues. In this report, crack tensor was calculated using the tunnel wall mapping and rock mechanical test results in the shaft and research galleries in the MIU. Two dimension excavation analysis was conducted at the Ventilation Shaft and GL -500 m Sub Stage using the calculated crack tensor at GL -500 m. Based on calculated crack tensor at GL 500 m, validation of the crack tensor at GL -500 m estimated during Phase I was verified. Relative error of crack tensor was calculated in order to examine variation of relative error to the scale of observation areas.

Resonant X-ray scattering of PrRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$

PrRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$ shows a metal-insulator (MI) transition at $$T_{mathrm MI} simeq$$ 62 K accompanied by a structural phase transition. Because LaRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$ without $$4f$$ electrons does not shows the MI transition, $$4f$$ electrons in the Pr atom plays an important role in the transition. In order to elucidate a modulation of electronic states of Pr, we have carried out a resonant X-ray scattering study of PrRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$ at Pr $$L_2$$- and $$L_3$$-edges. Below $$T_{mathrm MI}$$, resonant signal at the absorption main-edge was successfully observed at the superlattice reflections of the modulation vector $$vec{q}=(1,0,0)$$ in addition to the energy-independent component from the lattice distortion. Because the reflection contains the difference of anomalous scattering factors between two Pr atoms in the unit cell, two different electronic states are actually ordered below $$T_{MI}$$. Furthermore we found that the polarization of X-ray is mostly unrotated even at the resonance, which indicates that the resonant scattering in PrRu$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$ is almost isotropic.

Resonant x-ray scattering study was carried out to investigate an anomalous ordered state ($$T_A$$ = 6.5 K) in the filled skutterudite PrFe$$_4$$P$$_{12}$$. At the Pr-$$L_{III}$$ absorption edge, we observed resonant features in $$h+k+l$$ = odd reflections, which are forbidden in the $$bcc$$ structure above $$T_A$$. Because these reflections contain the difference of anomalous scattering factor between two Pr atoms in the $$bcc$$ unit cell, and the ordered state is attributed to the ordering of two different electronic states of Pr.
