Effects of Cs/Sr intercalation on the structure and electrical conductivity of weathered biotite

Weathered biotite (WB), a clay-based layered mineral, becomes thermoelectrically active after molten-salt treatment above 700$$^{circ}$$C. In this study, we investigate how Cs and Sr intercalation influences its local structure and electrical conductivity. WB was treated with molten salts containing CsCl and/or SrCl$$_{2}$$, and the resulting materials were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), and four-probe conductivity measurements. XRF verified Cs/Sr incorporation, while XRD confirmed retention of the layered structure. XAFS revealed that, in the Cs/Sr-intercalated sample, the Sr-Si distance shortens by $$sim 0.2$$,$AA{}$ at elevated temperatures, indicating a closer interaction with the Si-O layer. Electrical conductivity measured from 630$$sim$$860$$^{circ}$$C showed that Cs/Sr-WB exhibits higher conductivity than Sr-WB in the 630$$sim$$780$$^{circ}$$C region. These results suggest that interlayer ion rearrangement enhances conduction pathways, demonstrating the potential of interlayer structural control for designing clay-based thermoelectric materials.

The STACY was modified from a homogeneous solution-fueled reactor to a heterogeneous-core reactor composed of fuel rods and a light water moderator. This modification was undertaken to support research on the criticality characteristics of fuel debris generated by the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. To facilitate these studies, we developed simulant devices that can be inserted into the modified STACY core as components of fuel debris mock-up configurations. From April to June 2024, Authors conducted a series of pre-service inspections on the safety performance of STACY and subsequently received approval from the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) to resume operation. Experimental operations involving the simulant devices were carried out from that point until the end of March 2025. The pre-service inspections included shutdown margin, one-rod stuck margin, and measurements of the reactivity addition rate. All results satisfied STACY's safety limits.

Experiments on Concrete-loaded core in the modified STACY

In order to investigate the effect on criticality characteristics of fuel debris containing concrete composition in the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, critical experiments loaded concrete rods were conducted in the modified STACY. The experimental cores of the modified STACY were composed of light water, fuel rods, and concrete rods with grid plates with 15.0-mm lattice intervals in the core tank. Each fuel rod consisted of a zirconium alloy clad tube (9.5-mm outer diameter) and UO$$_{2}$$ pellets (8.2-mm diameter) with 4.98wt.% 235U enrichment. Each concrete rod was composed of concrete simulant pellets (7.0-mm diameter) and an aluminum alloy clad tube (9.5-mm outer diameter). The concrete simulant pellets were fabricated using an aggregate-free mortar in order to ensure a uniform composition of the pellets, and the composition was evaluated by chemical analysis. Three experimental cores were configurated with 9, 25 and 69 concrete rods. The critical water level data were obtained. An effect of composition uncertainty of the concrete simulant pellet was estimated by sensitivity analysis using MCNP6.2 with JENLD-4.0. The sensitivity analysis estimated the effect to be less than 3 pcm. The calculation results performed using MCNP6.2 with ENDF/B-VII.1, JENDL-4.0, and JENDL-5 libraries showed a tendency to overestimate the multiplication factor according to increasing the loading amount of the concrete rods.

The removal of fuel debris is one of the most important and challenging tasks in the decommissioning of power reactors damaged in the 2011 accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (1F). The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) has implemented a renewal program of the Static Experiment Critical Facility (STACY), transitioning it from a homogeneous solution system to a heterogeneous water-moderated system, in order to verify the criticality calculations that consider the fuel debris from the 1F accident. The first criticality of the modified STACY was achieved in April 2024. After a series of performance inspections, an experimental campaign for the investigation of fuel debris characteristics was started in August 2024. In this paper, we describe the main equipment of the modified STACY. In addition, the experimental equipment for the debris-simulated core configuration is also introduced.

JAEA has modified the STACY from a homogeneous system using solution fuel to a heterogeneous system using fuel rods in order to obtain criticality characteristics of fuel debris. The modification of the STACY was completed in December 2023. A series of performance inspections were conducted for the start of experimental operations. A new thermal power calibration is required for the performance inspections in order to operate at less than 200 W, which is the permitted thermal power. However, the thermal power measurement method and calibration data used in the former STACY is no longer available due to the modification of the modified STACY. We measured the thermal power of the STACY using the activation method that was improved to adapt to the measurement condition and calibrated the power meter system. Since the positions where activation foils could be installed were very limited, the thermal power was evaluated using numerical calculations supplemented by experimental data. Neutron flux data at the positions of the activation foil was measured by the activation method. Neutron distribution in the core was calculated by the Monte Carlo code MVP. A response function of the activation foil was calculated using the PHITS. The uncertainty of the thermal power measurement was conservatively estimated to be about 15%. Four operations were conducted for the thermal power measurement. The power meter was calibrated by using three operational data and tested with the one operational data. It was found that the indicated value of the meter adjusted by the STACY before the modification work would tend to overestimate the actual output by about 40%. In addition, the current calibration was able to calibrate the meter to within 3% accuracy.

We are developing materials using clay minerals for thermoelectric materials that can be used at high temperatures in environmental friendly applications. We have succeeded in obtaining thermoelectric properties at high temperatures, but we do not know why these properties are exhibited. In order to elucidate the structural changes of weathered biotite under high temperature conditions, we will develop an XAFS analysis method and clarify the local structure of Fe at high temperatures. The local structure analysis of Fe in samples sintered in atmospheric and vacuum environments reveals changes in the chemical bonding state of Fe.

Achieving carbon neutrality in Japan in 2050, hydrogen is expected to be used as an alternative to fossil fuels in the hard-to-abate sectors. In steelmaking, hydrogen-based reduction process has been developed as a substitute for the conventional blast furnace steelmaking process, which involves the reduction of iron ore by coke. In chemical industry, a novel olefin production process has been developed using hydrogen and CO$$_{2}$$, through methanol as an intermediate chemical. A large amount of hydrogen is required for these novel processes. Nuclear energy is well-suited to large-scale low-carbon hydrogen production. High temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) is a type of nuclear reactor featuring extraction of high temperature heat. The heat can be applicable to hydrogen production. This study predicts hydrogen demand in five industrial complexes in Japan in 2050 and estimates the potential for introducing HTGR to meet the demand. The introduction of HTGR could be a promising solution for decarbonizing industrial complexes due to their large-scale hydrogen supply capacity.

The ICRU has proposed to change the definitions of the operational quantities used for the area and individual monitoring for external exposure in the ICRU Report 95. As introducing the new operational quantities into the radiation monitoring may affect the dose assessment results using the present personal dosimeters, it is necessary to characterize the energy spectrum in the workplace and the energy dependency of the dosimeters to be used. In this work the photon spectra were measured using a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector or a LaBr$$_3$$(Ce) scintillation detector at the workplaces in the Japanese Research Reactor No.3 (JRR-3) and the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) at Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA). Then the present and new operational quantities were evaluated using the above mention spectra at the workplaces and compared each other.

This study examines the utilization of Fukushima weathered biotite(WB)as an alternative to conventional thermoelectric materials traditionally derived from rare and toxic substances. WB underwent milling, classification, and subsequent heat treatment via molten-salt treatment to produce crystals exhibiting conductivity akin to semiconductors within from 650$$^{circ}$$C to 850$$^{circ}$$C range. Evaluation of WB and the derived crystal's electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient showcased their viability for high-temperature thermoelectric applications. Consequently, WB attained a dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of 0.015, signaling its potential as a thermoelectric material that surpasses 650$$^{circ}$$C.

Uranium and Plutonium mixed oxide (MOX) pellets used as fast reactor fuels have been produced from several raw materials by mechanical blending method through processes of ball milling, additive blending, granulation, pressing, sintering and so on. It is essential to control the pellet density which is one of the important fuel specifications, but it is difficult to understand relationships among many parameters in the production. Database for MOX production was prepared from production results in Japan, and input data of eighteen types were chosen from production process and made a data set. Machine learning model to predict sintered density of MOX pellet was derived by gradient boosting regressor, and represented the measured sintered density with coefficient of determination of R$$^{2}$$=0.996

Accurate analysis of N fixation in leguminous crops requires determination of N utilization within an intact plant$$;$$ however, most approaches require tissue disassembly. We developed a simple and rapid technique to generate high-purity and high-yield [$$^{13}$$N]N$$_2$$ gas and obtained real-time images of N fixation in an intact soybean plant. The purification efficiency was $$sim$$ 81.6% after decay correction.

The mercury target has large size as 1.3$$times$$1.3$$times$$2.5 m$$^{3}$$. In view of reducing the amount of wastes, we studied the structure so that the fore part could be separated. The flange is required to have high seal performance less than 1$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ Pa m$$^{3}$$/s. Invar with low thermal expansion is a candidate. Due to its low stiffness, however, the flange may deform when it is fastened by bolts. Practically invar is reinforced with stainless steel where all interface between them has to be bonded completely with the HIP bonding. In this study, we made specimens at four temperatures and conducted tensile tests. The specimen bonded at 973 K had little diffusion layer, and so fractured at the interface. The tensile strength reduced with increasing the temperature, and the reduced amount was about 10% at 1473 K. The analyzed residual stresses near the interface increased by 50% at maximum. Then, we concluded that the optimum temperature was 1173 K.
