Integrated thermal power measurement in the modified STACY for the performance inspections

JAEA has modified the STACY from a homogeneous system using solution fuel to a heterogeneous system using fuel rods in order to obtain criticality characteristics of fuel debris. The modification of the STACY was completed in December 2023. A series of performance inspections were conducted for the start of experimental operations. A new thermal power calibration is required for the performance inspections in order to operate at less than 200 W, which is the permitted thermal power. However, the thermal power measurement method and calibration data used in the former STACY is no longer available due to the modification of the modified STACY. We measured the thermal power of the STACY using the activation method that was improved to adapt to the measurement condition and calibrated the power meter system. Since the positions where activation foils could be installed were very limited, the thermal power was evaluated using numerical calculations supplemented by experimental data. Neutron flux data at the positions of the activation foil was measured by the activation method. Neutron distribution in the core was calculated by the Monte Carlo code MVP. A response function of the activation foil was calculated using the PHITS. The uncertainty of the thermal power measurement was conservatively estimated to be about 15%. Four operations were conducted for the thermal power measurement. The power meter was calibrated by using three operational data and tested with the one operational data. It was found that the indicated value of the meter adjusted by the STACY before the modification work would tend to overestimate the actual output by about 40%. In addition, the current calibration was able to calibrate the meter to within 3% accuracy.

A dissolution method for analyzing the elemental composition of fuel debris using the sodium peroxide (Na$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$) fusion technique has been developed. Herein, two different types of simulated debris materials (such as solid solution of (Zr,RE)O$$_{2}$$ and molten core-concrete interaction products (MCCI)) were taken. At various temperatures, these debris materials were subsequently fused with Na$$_{2}$$O$$_{2}$$ in crucibles, which are made of different materials, such as Ni, Al$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$, Fe, and Zr. Then, the fused samples are dissolved in nitric acid. Furthermore, the effects of the experimental conditions on the elemental composition analysis were evaluated using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), which suggested the use of a Ni crucible at 923 K as an optimum testing condition. The optimum testing condition was then applied to the demonstration tests with Three Mile Island unit-2 (TMI-2) debris in a shielded concrete cell, thereby achieving complete dissolution of the debris. The elemental composition of TMI-2 debris revealed by the proposed dissolution method has good reproducibility and has an insignificant contradiction in the mass balance of the sample. Therefore, this newly developed reproducible dissolution method can be effectively utilized in practical applications by dissolving fuel debris and estimating its elemental composition.

In the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS, 1F), workers are removing structures from inside the buildings, monitoring radioactive contamination, and decontaminating inside the buildings. For the measurement of contamination of suit surfaces of workers, we have developed a hand-held survey meter that can measure and visualize surface radioactive contamination of $$alpha$$-nuclides in a high $$beta$$/ $$gamma$$-ray background environment. In order to selectively measure $$alpha$$-nuclides, we designed and built a prototype hand-held survey meter for $$alpha$$-rays, which consists of a thin-film ZnS:Ag scintillator, a multi-anode photomultiplier tube (MA-PMT), individual amplification and counting circuits for each channel of the MA-PMT. Based on the result of $$alpha$$-ray counting, the developed device is capable of counting the $$alpha$$-radiation beyond 2.1$$times$$10$$^{7}$$ cpm. In the $$gamma$$-ray response test, there was no $$gamma$$-ray response even when the detector was in close proximity to a high intensity source; The dose rate was estimated to be more than 1 Sv/h. In the future, we plan to reduce the weight and size of the device, as well as improve the usability of the device through actual testing in contaminated environments.

The PSTEP is a nationwide research collaboration in Japan and was conducted from April 2015 to March 2020, supported by a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Innovative Areas from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan. It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

Optimum temperature for HIP bonding invar alloy and stainless steel

The mercury target has large size as 1.3$$times$$1.3$$times$$2.5 m$$^{3}$$. In view of reducing the amount of wastes, we studied the structure so that the fore part could be separated. The flange is required to have high seal performance less than 1$$times$$10$$^{-6}$$ Pa m$$^{3}$$/s. Invar with low thermal expansion is a candidate. Due to its low stiffness, however, the flange may deform when it is fastened by bolts. Practically invar is reinforced with stainless steel where all interface between them has to be bonded completely with the HIP bonding. In this study, we made specimens at four temperatures and conducted tensile tests. The specimen bonded at 973 K had little diffusion layer, and so fractured at the interface. The tensile strength reduced with increasing the temperature, and the reduced amount was about 10% at 1473 K. The analyzed residual stresses near the interface increased by 50% at maximum. Then, we concluded that the optimum temperature was 1173 K.

Evaluating test conditions for in situ tracer migration test in fractured siliceous mudstone involving groundwater with dissolved gas

Fault zones and excavation damaged zones have the potential to act as flow paths, and the characterization of solute transport in such zones in mudstones is important for the safe geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, few in situ tracer migration tests have been conducted on fractures in mudstones. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency has conducted in situ tracer migration experiments using uranine, for fractures in siliceous mudstone of the Wakkanai Formation. 18 experiments were conducted under various conditions An injection flow rate that is slightly higher than the pumping flow rate is ideal for tracer migration experiments involving injection and pumping, as conducted in this study. In situ tracer migration experiments involving injection and pumping conducted in a groundwater environment with dissolved gases allow empirical evaluation of the relationship of the tracer recovery ratio and the groundwater degassing with the injection and pumping flow rate ratio. This evaluation is effective for the design of experimental conditions that account for degassing and ensure high levels of tracer recovery.

Pressure-induced stacking disorder in boehmite

The structure of an aluminum layered hydroxide, boehmite ($$gamma$$-AlOOH), as a function of pressure was studied by using ${it in situ}$ synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction. Peak broadening and subsequent splitting, which are only found for hkl (h $$neq$$ 0) peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns above 25 GPa, are explained by stacking disorder accompanied with a continuously increasing displacement of the AlO$$_{6}$$ octahedral layer along a-axis. This finding could be the first experimental result for the pressure-induced stacking disorder driven by the continuous layer displacement. The magnitude of the layer displacement was estimated from the X-ray scattering profile calculation based on the stacking disordered structure model. Hydrogen bond geometries of boehmite, obtained by structure refinements on the observed neutron diffraction patterns for deuterated sample up to 10 GPa, show linearly approaching O-D covalent and D$$cdots$$O hydrogen bond distances and they could merge below 26 GPa. The pressure-induced stacking disorder would make the electrostatic potential of hydrogen bonds asymmetric, yielding less chance for the proton-tunnelling.

We have installed new experimental apparatus to measure $$gamma$$ rays from highly excited states populated by the multi-nucleon transfer reactions with heavy-ion projectiles to determine the ($$n, gamma$$) cross sections by means of the surrogate reaction method. Apparatus consists of two anti-Compton LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) spectrometers to measure the $$gamma$$ rays and a Si $${Delta}E$$-$$E$$ detector system to detect outgoing projectile-like particles. Reactions of 153-MeV $$^{18}$$O beams with $$^{155}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd targets were used to study the performance of apparatus. By using the LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) scintillators with relatively large volume (101.6 mm in diameter and 127 mm in length), we have successfully measured $$gamma$$ rays from the compound nuclei, which have excitation energy above neutron separation energy, populated by $$^{155}$$Gd($$^{18}$$O, $$^{16}$$O)$$^{157}$$Gd and $$^{157}$$Gd($$^{18}$$O, $$^{16}$$O)$$^{159}$$Gd two-neutron transfer reactions. The present study has demonstrated high capability of apparatus to measure the de-excitation $$gamma$$ rays in the compound nuclei produced by the multi-nucleon transfer reactions for determination of the ($$n, gamma$$) cross sections by using the surrogate reaction method.

Anti-Compton LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) spectrometers have been installed at JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator facility in order to measure the $$gamma$$ rays from the highly excited states produced by surrogate reactions. Each spectrometer consists of a central LaBr$$_{3}$$(Ce) detector with a diameter of 10.2 cm and a length of 12.7 cm, and an annular BGO detector with a thickness of 2.5 cm and a length of 25.4 cm. In this contribution, we will present the results of performance test using the standard $$gamma$$ ray source and high-energy $$gamma$$ rays from the $$^{27}$$Al(p,$$gamma$$)$$^{28}$$Si reaction, and a measurement plan for (n,$$gamma$$) cross sections using a surrogate reaction at JAEA-Tokai tandem accelerator facility.

A mechanism for fast magnetic reconnection in collisionless plasma is studied for understanding sawtooth collapse in tokamak discharges. Explosive growth of the tearing mode driven by electron inertia is analytically estimated by using an energy principle with a nonlinear displacement map. Decrease of the potential energy in the nonlinear regime (where the island width exceeds the electron skin depth) is found to be steeper than in the linear regime, resulting in accelerated reconnection. Release of free energy by such ideal fluid motion leads to unsteady and strong convective flow, which is not deterred by the small dissipation effects in high-temperature tokamak plasmas. Direct numerical simulation in slab geometry substantiates the theoretical prediction of the nonlinear growth.
