Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:50.04(Energy & Fuels)This study analyzed the long-term hydraulic pressure data during the excavation of Horonobe URL to estimate the variation of effective-hydraulic-conductivity. We performed the numerical simulation with the poroelastic effect for the estimation because the observed hydraulic pressure is highly affected by the Mandel-Cryer effect. The evaluation of the observed data based on our simulation results showed that the effective-hydraulic-conductivity gradually decreases from 400 m to 500 m in depth and is as low as the intact rock at depths greater than 500 m. Not only the analysis based on our simulation results but also the analysis based on analytical solution indicate the domain with different hydraulic properties in the Wakkanai Formation. These results suggest that the fracture-hydraulic-connectivity changes not abruptly but gradually over several tens of meters around the predicted boundary.

The information was compiled for domestic users of space weather forecasts for appropriate preparedness against space weather disasters. This paper gives a comprehensive summary of the survey, focusing on the fields of electricity, satellite operations, communication and broadcasting, satellite positioning usage, aviation, human space activity, and daily life on the Earth's surface, using the cutting-edge knowledge of space weather. Quantitative estimations of the economic impact of space weather events on electricity and aviation are also given.

It has made a significant progress in space weather research and operational forecasts, publishing over 500 refereed journal papers and organizing four international symposiums, various workshops and seminars, and summer school for graduate students at Rikubetsu in 2017. This paper is a summary report of the PSTEP and describes the major research achievements it produced.

We perform the numerical simulation of the response of hydraulic head observed in HDB-6 during the excavation of the Horonobe URL to verify the existence of low effective permeable domain in the subsurface. The low permeable domain as an intact rock due to the low hydraulic fracture connectivity is estimated to exist in the deep domain while the permeability of the shallow domain is relatively high due to the hydraulic fracture connectivity there. Our simulation shows that the observed hydraulic head is affected by the Mandel-Cryer effect due to the hydrogeological structure and the effect for the duration of over years requires the low permeability as an intact rock in the deep domain. These results verify the existence of the low effective permeable domain in the deep subsurface estimated by the previous study.

Times Cited Count:4 Percentile:17.83(Chemistry, Physical)The structure of an aluminum layered hydroxide, boehmite (-AlOOH), as a function of pressure was studied by using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction. Peak broadening and subsequent splitting, which are only found for hkl (h 0) peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns above 25 GPa, are explained by stacking disorder accompanied with a continuously increasing displacement of the AlO octahedral layer along a-axis. This finding could be the first experimental result for the pressure-induced stacking disorder driven by the continuous layer displacement. The magnitude of the layer displacement was estimated from the X-ray scattering profile calculation based on the stacking disordered structure model. Hydrogen bond geometries of boehmite, obtained by structure refinements on the observed neutron diffraction patterns for deuterated sample up to 10 GPa, show linearly approaching O-D covalent and DO hydrogen bond distances and they could merge below 26 GPa. The pressure-induced stacking disorder would make the electrostatic potential of hydrogen bonds asymmetric, yielding less chance for the proton-tunnelling.

DC and AC magnetic measurements showed short-range glassy magnetic ordering at Tg about 40 K. Such ordering was observed by neutron diffraction and is ascribable to the size mismatch of R and Sr settled randomly at the same crystallographic site. Dielectric constants for each material were about 1000-10000 between about 50 K and 300 K and showed broad maximums above Tg. Dielectric dispersion showed poor coherency of the motion of polar regions, plausibly because of the size-mismatch effect; both the magnetic and dielectric properties of this system are governed by the randomness at the R/Sr site. The tan and EXAFS data suggest that the dielectric response is rooted in a transfer of the Mn-3d electrons.

In order to obtain a high precision measure for microbeam size estimation and lens system optimization, or for improvement of spatial resolution down to 100 nm level, we applied this lithography technique itself combined with the electroplating process to make a Ni relief pattern as an optimum resolution standard to be used in secondary electron imaging. In this work, using this standard, the smallest beam size could be obtained. This paper also discuses on the scattering of ions in the materials influenced to the resolution using a Monte Carlo simulation code.
