Ion beam induced luminescence analysis of lanthanide complexes in the organic solvents for minor actinides recovery process was carried out to investigate the structures of complexes. In this study, hydrogen ion beam obtained from the single-ended accelerator and argon ion beam obtained from the azimuthally varying field cyclotron were used in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. In the experiments, ion beam induced luminescence spectra of lanthanide complexes in the organic solvents were measured, and the relationship between the obtained spectra and the structures of complexes was studied.

An extraction chromatography method has been studied to recover minor actinides from high-level liquid waste. For effective elution of minor actinides in an adsorbent, the structures of complexes are attempted to be evaluated with ion beam induced luminescence. In this study, Eu complexes in the adsorbent were irradiated by Ar$$^{8+}$$ ion beam, and the ion beam induced luminescence spectra of Eu complexes were measured to evaluate the structures of Eu complexes.

The structures of Eu complexes in the adsorbents prepared with various extractants were evaluated by ion beam induced luminescence analysis in an extraction chromatography for minor actinides recovery. The luminescence of Eu was measured with a proton beam obtained from the single-ended accelerator and an argon ion beam obtained from the azimuthally varying field cyclotron in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application in National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology. In this study, it was confirmed that the spectral shape of Eu complexes in the adsorbents varied depending on the kinds of extractants, and the correlation between the change in the spectra and the structures of Eu complexes was investigated.

In this study, Eu was used as simulated material of minor actinides, and silica-based adsorbents containing Eu complex were prepared. The ion beam induced luminescence spectra of Eu complexes in silica-based adsorbents were measured, and the basic data for the structures of Eu complexes were obtained.

Kyoto University reports on the distance information display system developed in collaboration between "Fugen" and Kyoto University. In the distance information display system, the worker can easily measure the distance of the object. In this study, in order to make measuring lengths of the objects and the gaps at NPPs more efficient, the Distance Information Display System was developed, which make it easy for the dismantling workers to measure them. The results showed that the Distance Information Display System developed in this study can be used easily with extremely simple operation by the dismantling workers at NPPs, and the workers can also measure the lengths in a short time.

The microscopic determination of the magnetic moment in the Fe$$_{16}$$N$$_{2}$$ nano-particles by means of polarized neutron diffraction experiment is reported. These particles had been developed by industrial researchers for use in high-density magnetic tape, and the particles were coated with proprietary nonmagnetic material. Polarized neutrons were used to measure the magnetic-nuclear interference contributions and, given the known crystal structure, the detailed analysis allowed to determine the magnetic moments on the different Fe-sites. The future perspectives of this technique using the high-intensity powder instrument in combination with pulsed magnetic high-field at J-PARC including the possible industrial application is discussed.

Magnetic recording tape is widely used for a massive data storage with high reliability, and further increase of capacity, the recording density, is requested by IT organizations. The needle-shaped ferromagnetic metals has been used for the recording media. However, it is necessary to make the media a small and spherical shape to increase the recording density. We have performed the polarized neutron diffraction measurements of Fe$$_{16}$$N$$_{2}$$ round-shape nanoparticles, and determined the saturation magnetic moments and averaged core size of Fe$$_{16}$$N$$_{2}$$ nanoparticles covered by a laminate layer.

Magnetization distribution maps deduced from the measurement of polarization dependent cross-sections have provided unique information in understanding of the detailed electronic configurations in mixed valence materials and molecular magnets. Because of the limited neutron flux the method has been mostly applied to single crystal studies. In the advent of strong pulsed neutron source with intense high resolution powder diffractomer the magnetization distribution measurements by means of polarized neutron powder diffraction can become common place. The introduction of the high magnetic field may extend the applicability of the method to materials requiring high saturation field. In this lecture the polarized neutron powder diffraction experiment on Fe$$_{16}$$N$$_{2}$$ and $$alpha$$-Fe fine particles performed in the frame work of "Ibaraki Prefecture Neutron Utilization Working Subgroup on nano-magnetic materials" will be presented and the possibility of the method will be discussed.
