Verification of dose estimation of Auger electrons emitted from Cu-64 using a combination of FNTD measurements and Monte Carlo simulations

Internal radiation therapy with Cu-64 concentrates energy deposition in tumor cells by virtue of released Auger electrons with low energy. In our previous study, we have attached the solutions at the surface of Fluorescent Nuclear Track Detector (FNTD) and succeeded in measuring the absorbed doses of Auger electrons registered in FNTD. However, because there are several types of radiation emitted from the source, i.e., beta rays, positron etc., the contribution degree of Auger electron to energy concentration remain uncertain. In this study, we quantitatively analyzed the spatial dose distribution in the FNTD based on Monte Carlo simulation with PHITS and GEANT4, and evaluated high dose deposited by Auger electrons. The dose distribution calculated by the PHITS code is exactly equivalent to that by Geant4. Also, the simulations are well agreement with experimental results. If the contribution of Auger electrons is ignored, the significantly high absorbed dose proximal to the source is not properly reduced. These findings demonstrate that Auger electrons work very effectively to kill cancer cells proximal to Cu-64 source while minimizing damage effects on normal cells distal to the source.

We show that Xe ion irradiation with 80 MeV to GdBa$$_{2}$$Cu$$_{3}$$Oy-coated conductors creates different morphologies of columnar defects (CDs) depending on the irradiation angles relative to the c-axis: continuous CDs with a larger diameter are formed for oblique irradiation at $$theta_{rm i}$$ = 45$$^{circ}$$, whereas the same ion beam at a different angle ($$theta_{rm i}$$ = 0$$^{circ}$$) induces the formation of discontinuous CDs. The direction-dependent morphologies of CDs significantly affect the angular behavior of the critical current density $$J_{rm c}$$.

Guidance for ${it in situ}$ gamma spectrometry intercomparison based on the information obtained through five intercomparisons during the Fukushima mapping project

Five intercomparisons of in situ $$gamma$$ spectrometry by 6-7 participating teams have been conducted between December 2011 and August 2015 at sites in Fukushima prefecture which affected by the fallout of FDNPS accident occurred in March 2011. The evaluated deposition densities agreed within 5-6% in terms of coefficient of variation (CV) for radiocesium ($$^{134}$$Cs and $$^{137}$$Cs), by our best achievement, and the ratio of $$^{134}$$Cs/$$^{137}$$Cs in deposition density agreed within 1-2% in CV, through five intercomparisons. These results guarantee the accuracy of the measurements of the mapping project. Two different methods for intercomparison were conducted: (1) sequential measurements at an identical point; and (2) simultaneous measurements in a narrow area within 3 m radius. In a comparison between the two methods at a site, no significant difference was observed between the results. The standard protocols for the two different intercomparison methods were proposed based on our experience.

The CIELO collaboration has studied neutron cross sections on nuclides that significantly impact criticality in nuclear facilities - $$^{235}$$U, $$^{238}$$U, $$^{239}$$Pu, $$^{56}$$Fe, $$^{16}$$O and $$^{1}$$H - with the aim of improving the accuracy of the data and resolving previous discrepancies in our understanding. This multi-laboratory pilot project, coordinated via the OECD/NEA Working Party on Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC) Subgroup 40 with support also from the IAEA, has motivated experimental and theoretical work and led to suites of new evaluated libraries that accurately reflect measured data and also perform well in integral simulations of criticality. This report summarizes our results and outlines plans for the next phase of this collaboration.

Oxidation characteristics of lead-alloy coolants in air ingress accident

The chemical behaviors of lead (Pb) based coolants in the air ingress accident of fast reactors were investigated by means of the thermodynamic considerations and the static oxidation experiments for Pb alloys at various chemical compositions. The results of the static oxidation tests for lead-bismuth (Pb-Bi) alloys indicated that Pb was depleted from the alloy due to the preferential formation of PbO in air at 773K. Pb-Bi oxide and Bi$$_{2}$$O$$_{3}$$ were formed after the enrichment of Bi in the alloys due to the Pb depletion. The oxidation rates of the alloys were much larger than that of the steels, and became larger with higher Pb concentration in the alloys. The compatibility of Pb-Bi alloys with stainless steel was worse when the Pb concentration in the alloys became low, since the dissolution type corrosion was promoted by the Bi composition in the alloy. The Pb-Li alloys were oxidized as they formed Li$$_{2}$$PbO$$_{3}$$ and Li$$_{2}$$CO$$_{3}$$. Then, Li was depleted from the alloy.

Bulk samples of Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta intermetallic compounds were irradiated with 16 MeV Au, 4.5 MeV Ni, 4.5 MeV Al, 200 MeV Xe and 1.0 MeV He ions, and the change in near-surface lattice structure was investigated by means of the grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD)and EXAFS. The Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta lattice structures transform from the ordered structures (orthorhombic and monoclinic structures for Ni$$_{3}$$Nb and Ni$$_{3}$$Ta, respectively) to the amorphous state by the Au, Ni, Al and Xe ion irradiations. Irrespective of such heavy ion species or energies, the lattice structure transformation to the amorphous state almost correlate with the density of energy deposited through elastic collisions.

Numerical analysis of residual stress distribution on peening process

In this study, first, an analysis method to predict the behaviour of residual stress distribution on shot peening process was proposed. In the proposed method, the load distribution on the collision of shots was modelled, and it was integrated with the dynamic analysis method based on the idealized explicit FEM (IEFEM). The accuracy of the proposed analysis system was confirmed by comparing the stress distribution on the collision of a single shot with the results analyzed by ABAQUS. The thermal elastic plastic analysis method using IEFEM was applied to the analysis of residual stress distribution of multi-pass welded pipe joint. The calculated residual stress distribution was compared with the measured residual stress distribution using X-ray diffraction (XRD). As a result, it was shown that the both welding residual distribution agree well with each other. Considering the calculated welding residual stress distribution, the modification of stress distribution due to shot peening was predicted by the proposed analysis system. As a result, the similar stress distribution with measurement by XRD was obtained in case that a large number of collisions are considered.

The Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility (PFFF) of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency is now in its decommissioning phase. In the PFFF, terminated gloveboxes have been dismantled. Gloveboxes to be dismantled are surrounded by a plastic enclosure to prevent contamination from being spread into process room. Dismantling operations for gloveboxes are performed manually by workers, each wearing an air-feed suit. However, the mental and physical loads placed on workers wearing the air-feed suits are intensively high. Therefore, R&Ds on new dismantling technologies including utilization of heavy machines covered with plastic enclosure for anti-contamination have been started to reduce the potential risks associated with workers and decommissioning costs. In this paper, the status of decommissioning of the PFFF and the overview of developed dismantling technologies for $$alpha$$-tight gloveboxes are described.

Probing strongly correlated 4$$f$$-orbital symmetry of the ground state in Yb compounds by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission

We show that the strongly correlated 4$$f$$-orbital symmetry of the ground state is revealed by linear dichroism in core-level photoemission spectra, as we have discovered for YbRh$$_{2}$$Si$$_{2}$$ and YbCu$$_{2}$$Si$$_{2}$$. Theoretical analysis shows us that the linear dichroism reflects the anisotropic charge distributions resulting from a crystalline electric field. We have successfully determined the ground-state 4$$f$$ symmetry for both compounds from the polarization-dependent angle resolved core-level spectra at a temperature well below the first excitation energy. The excited-state symmetry is also probed by temperature dependence of the linear dichroism where the high measurement temperatures are on the order of the crystal-field-splitting energies.

Hardening induced by energetic electron beam for Cu-Ti alloys

In our previous research, it was found that the hardness of Cu-Ti alloy increased by energetic heavy ion irradiation at room temperature. In the conference, we will show the result of electron beam irradiation on the hardness of Cu-Ti alloys. We used CuTi sheets with the dimension of 10 $$times$$ 10 $$times$$ 0.250 mm$$^{3}$$. The specimens were irradiated at 473 K and 523 K with 2 MeV electrons. For comparison, we thermally aged some specimens at the same temperatures as that for the irradiation. The electron fluence of 8.0 $$times$$ 10$$^{17}$$/cm$$^{2}$$ corresponds to the processing time of about 10 h. As a result, the thermal aging for 10 h increases the hardness by 5 or less, which is much smaller than that by the irradiation (about 20). The hardness of the reverse side of irradiated surface is almost the same as that of the irradiated surface. The present result implies that energetic electron irradiation can be a useful tool for controlling the hardness of the "bulk" Cu-Ti alloy.

Status and future plan of decommissioning of the Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility

Plutonium Fuel Fabrication Facility is now in a decommissioning phase. In the facility, stabilizing activities of nuclear material residuals remained and the gloveboxes dismantling activities have been carried out simultaneously. Glovebox dismantling activities are performed manually by a worker wearing air-feed suit with mechanical tools in a plastic enclosure which is constructed around the glove boxes for preventing spread of contamination. However, the mental load and physical load of the worker are intensively high. Therefore, worker's safely issue still exists and need to be resolved. Moreover, occupational time for the worker is restricted to only one hour per day, which in turn make shortening schedule and cost savings almost impossible. R&D of new dismantling methods including application of heavy equipment with anti-contamination measure to strengthen the work performance in the plastic enclosures has been started to reduce the above mentioned potential risks and costs.

CIELO (Collaborative International Evaluated Library Organization) provides a new working paradigm to facilitate evaluated nuclear reaction data advances. It brings together experts from across the international nuclear reaction data community to identify and document discrepancies among existing evaluated data libraries, measured data, and model calculation interpretations, and aims to make progress in reconciling these discrepancies to create more accurate ENDF-formatted files. The focus will initially be on a small number of the highest-priority isotopes, namely $$^{1}$$H, $$^{16}$$O, $$^{56}$$Fe, $$^{235,238}$$U, and $$^{239}$$Pu. This paper identifies discrepancies between various evaluations of the highest priority isotopes. The evaluated data for these materials in the existing nuclear data libraries are reviewed, and some integral properties are given. The paper summarizes a program of nuclear science and computational work needed to create the new CIELO nuclear data evaluations.
