In total 896 behaviour records in the Fukushima Health Management Survey were analysed to estimate thyroid doses via inhalation, using a spatiotemporal radionuclides concentration database constructed by atmospheric dispersion simulations. After a decontamination factor for sheltering and a modifying factor for the dose coefficient were applied, estimated thyroid doses were close to those estimated on the basis of direct thyroid measurement. The median and 95th percentile of thyroid doses of 1-year-old children ranged from 1.2 to 15 mSv and from 7.5 to 30 mSv, respectively.

The dosimetry of a 110 keV electron beam (EB) irradiation field is studied using a calorimeter, film dosimeter, and Monte Carlo simulation. This is important base for dose control in practical processing to guarantee the process reproducibility and product reliability. The simulation results are validated on the measurement of the energy fluence obtained by the calorimeter at one position in the air plane at different distances from a beam exit window. The spatial dose distribution obtained from the simulation is compared to that obtained by the film dosimeter. They show good agreement within 5.0%. The precision of 5.0% is sufficient to control the surface modification of polymers and the development of semiconductor devices in practical radiation processing. These results suggest that film dosimetry results at just one position in the air plane are sufficient to determine the irradiation characteristics of the low energy EB, and to provide a base of quality control measures in practical radiation processing.

Microstructural change and atomic disordering was examined through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, with bright-field (BF) and high-resolution (HR) TEM images, and high angular resolution electron channelling X-ray spectroscopy (HARECXS), for single crystal MgAlO irradiated with 200 MeV Xe, and 340 or 350 MeV Au ions. The density of core damage region, detected by BFTEM with Fresnelcontrast, increased proportionally with ion fluence at the early stage of accumulation. This result is discussed with a balance between the formation and recovery of the core damage region under irradiation, and the influence region to induce the recovery was evaluated to be 7-9 nm in radius. The structure of the core damage region is found from HR and BFTEM images to be a columnar vacancy-rich region with a low atomic density.

Recently, by development of double balloon and capsule endoscopes, small intestinal whole area observation was enabled. However, it is difficult to use these endoscopes in patients with intestinal obstruction and adhesion. We developed a new endoscope that can be used in patients with intestinal obstruction and adhesion; this instrument consists of an ileus tube and an optical fiberscope (diameter, 1.1 mm). The complete observation of small intestinal is to be planned by controlling internal pressure of balloon in ileus tube, and pulling the tube out at constant speed. In our previous study, we have developed an internal pressure control device which consists of a balloon of ileus and an industrial cylinder, and we confirmed the utility. In this study, we developed a new control device combined with a general medical syringe, which enables to be sterilized easily and also to give less anxiety to patients. As the results of performance experiment of the device, the control accuracy was within 0.5% error. Furthermore, in a disturbance response, the pressure fluctuation was limited down to 12%, compared with a case without any control.

Aiming at cost-effective installation, orbit following calculations of energetic ions were performed for a design of ferritic installation on JT-60U by using the Fully three Dimensional magnetic field Orbit-Following Monte-Carlo (F3D OFMC) code. The installed ferritic steel adds the non-linear magnetic field on magnetic sensors for a plasma control and an equilibrium calculation. The code for a real-time control has been modified to take into account the magnetic field by ferritic steel. The plasma operation was successfully resumed and a real-time plasma control was successfully carried out after usual preparation processes. The heat load measurement indicates the improved confinement of energetic ions. These results are important for practical application of ferritic steel which is a leading candidate of a structural material on a demo reactor.

Three kinds of test tubes including a straight tube are used to compare the flow structure under turbulent flow condition. The superficial velocity up to 6 m/s is tested so that centrifugal Froude number covers a range from 0 to 3. The inter facial structure is visualized from two directions by a high-speed video system with a synchronized measurement of local pressure fluctuation. The results reveral that the flow transition line alters due to centrifugal force acting on liquid phase in the tube. Especially the bubbly fow regime is narrwed significantly. The pressure fluctuation amplitude gets large relatively to the average presure loww as void fraction increases. The Frequency spectra of the pressure fluctuation have plural peaks in the case of strong curvature, implying that the periodicity of slugging two-phase flow is collapsed by internal secondary flow actibated inside liquid phase. Moreover, the substantial velocity of gas phase is slower than the total superficial velocity in case of large Froude number because of biased distribution to the inner surface allowing liquid flow passing outside as like a radial stratified flow.

Two Japanese institutes, the NIRS and the JNC, which have own practical radon test chambers, performed a radon intercalibration experiment at PTB in Germany. The results by three institutes are in good agreement with each other within errors. Since there however seems to be systematic error in the results, it is examined in this paper in detail.

Recently, the detailed radial profile measurements of plasma parameters have been improved, so that the internal structure of plasmas has been explored. The understanding of plasma confinement has been enhanced by density and temperature fluctuation measurements using a mm-wave reflectometer and electron cyclotron emission measurements respectively. In addition, the real-time control experiments of electron density, neutron yield, radiated power and electron temperature gradient have been carried out successfully by corresponding diagnostic devices. These measurements and the real time control contribute to improving plasma performance. Diagnostic devices for next generation fusion devices such as a CO2 laser interferometer/polarimeter and a CO2 laser collective Thomson scattering system have been developed.
