The NTE was found to be intimately associated with the spontaneous magnetic ordering, known as magneto-volume effect (MVE). Here we report with compelling evidences that the continuous-like MVE in PrBaCoO is intrinsically of discontinuous character, originating from an magnetoelectric transition from an antiferromagnetic insulating large-volume (AFILV) phase to a ferromagnetic less-insulating small-volume (FLISV) phase. Furthermore, the magnetoelectric effect (ME) shows high sensitivity to multiple external stimuli such as temperature, carrier doping, hydrostatic pressure, magnetic field etc. In contrast to the well-known ME such as colossal magnetoresistance and multi-ferroic effect which involve symmetry breaking of crystal structure, the ME in the cobaltite is purely isostructural. Our discovery provides a new path way to realizing the ME as well as the NTE, which may find applications in new techniques.

This multi-laboratory pilot project, coordinated via the OECD/NEA Working Party on Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC) Subgroup 40 with support also from the IAEA, has motivated experimental and theoretical work and led to suites of new evaluated libraries that accurately reflect measured data and also perform well in integral simulations of criticality. This report summarizes our results and outlines plans for the next phase of this collaboration.

In order to examine the feasibility of the experiment, we measured the background rates of different detector candidate sites, which are located at the third floor of the MLF, using a detector consisting of plastic scintillators with a fiducial mass of 500 kg. The gammas and neutrons induced by the beam as well as the backgrounds from the cosmic rays were measured, and the results are described in this article.

It brings together experts from across the international nuclear reaction data community to identify and document discrepancies among existing evaluated data libraries, measured data, and model calculation interpretations, and aims to make progress in reconciling these discrepancies to create more accurate ENDF-formatted files. The focus will initially be on a small number of the highest-priority isotopes, namely H, O, Fe, U, and Pu. This paper identifies discrepancies between various evaluations of the highest priority isotopes. The evaluated data for these materials in the existing nuclear data libraries are reviewed, and some integral properties are given. The paper summarizes a program of nuclear science and computational work needed to create the new CIELO nuclear data evaluations.

Fusion power output of ITER is measured by a group of neutron flux monitors combined with a neutron activation system and neutron profile monitors. These systems should be absolutely calibrated by use of DD/DT generators moving inside the ITER vacuum vessel (in-situ calibration). Each neutron monitor has a limited measurement range of emission rate, but the ranges are connected by cross-calibration using the ITER plasma with at least one decade overlapping. The over all dynamic range covered by the group of neutron flux monitors is 10 n/sec to 10 n/sec. Effects of vertical/radial movement of plasma on the measurement accuracy were reviewed. It was found that cross-calibration using specially planned jog shots, and a vertical neutron camera is important to minimize the inaccuracy caused by the plasma movement.

The cooling system of the JSFR adopts an integrated primary sodium pump/intermediate heat exchanger (IHX), dual structure straight tube steam generator (SG) and short elbow sodium piping layout. Since, however, this is the first experience applying these technologies to SFRs in Japan, design approaches have been evaluated and R&D has been undertaken. This paper addresses the design study of the cooling system of the demonstration reactor JSFR in terms of thermal-hydraulic and structural integrity. Recent studies have shown that these new technologies have potential to be applied to the JSFR.

Expansion of matter, heated and pressurized through the electron-ion energy exchange, gives rise to the spallative ablation at small fluences and gaseous outflow from a target in the case of large fluences. Ablation threshold is low in comparison with a longer nanosecond XRL.

Ferritic / martensitic (F/M) steels are the candidate material for the beam window. To obtain the irradiation data, the PIE work of the SINQ target irradiation program (STIP) specimens was carried out at JAEA. In this study, the results of PIE on F/M steel F82H and its welded joint will be reported. The results of tensile tests indicate that the irradiation hardening occurred with increasing dpa up to 10.1 dpa below 320C irradiation. At higher dose (- 11.8 dpa) and higher temperature (- 380C), irradiation hardening and degradation of ductility relaxed. In this study, all specimens kept its ductility after irradiation and fractured in ductile manner. The fatigue life of F82H base metal is almost the same as that of unirradiated specimens. Though the number of specimen is limited, the fatigue life of F82H EB welded joints seems to increase after irradiation. The fracture surfaces of the specimens showed transgranular morphology. While F82H TIG welded specimens were not fractured by 10 cycles.

H-InvDB, originally developed as an integrated database of the human transcriptome based on extensive annotation of large sets of fulllength cDNA (FLcDNA) clones, now provides annotation for 120 558 human mRNAs extracted from the International Nucleotide Sequence Databases (INSD), in addition to 54 978 human FLcDNAs, in the latest release H-InvDB. We mapped those human transcripts onto the human genome sequences (NCBI build 36.1) and determined 34 699 human gene clusters, which could define 34 057 protein-coding and 642 non-protein-coding loci; 858 transcribed loci overlapped with predicted pseudogenes.

AEs with a rapid frequency sweeping and then saturation as the minimum value of the safety factor decreases have been observed. This frequency behaviour can be explained by RSAE and the transition from RSAEs toTAEs. The associated change in the charge exchange neutral particle flux suggests energetic ion transport due to these AEs. The total neutron emission reduction rate in the presence of these AEs is evaluated by calculation using the orbit following Monte-Carlo code taking into account the change in bulk plasmas. The evaluation indicates confinement of energetic ions is degraded due to these AEs. In particular, it is found that the confinement degradation of energetic ions is maximum during the transition from RSAEs to TAEs.

The New Crossover Project (NXO) is studying effect of fission irradiation on fuel material that research activity is crossing over universities, national and private laboratories. Simulation studies are being performed to find principal and triggering processes of the rim-structure formation in high burnup LWR fuel pellet, using accelerator irradiation and computational calculations. Accelerator irradiation, high energy electron irradiation, fission energy particle beam and ion implantation (ragegas atoms) and combined overlapping irradiations are being performed. For the target of irradiation, CeO isused as simulation of nuclear fuel. The initial results were such as planar structure made by Oxygen defects created by high energy electrons, and surface modification similar to grain-sub-division created by high fluence high energy particle irradiations.

The energetic ion profiles inferred from these measurements indicate that ALEs cause a radial redistribution of energetic ions of limited energy range from the core region to the outer region of the plasma in weak shear plasmas. This energy range is consistent with the resonance condition between the mode and the energetic ions. In reversed shear plasmas, reversed-shear-induced AEs (RSAEs) and their transition to TAEs as the minimum value of the safety factor decreases has been observed. Neutron measurements suggest energetic ion loss is large in the transition phase from RSAEs to TAEs.

To obtain the irradiation data, the SINQ target irradiation program (STIP) was initiated in 1996 at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) and has been progressing. JAERI takes part in STIP and shares the PIE work. In this study, the results of tensile tests on austenitic stainless steels, JPCA and 316F SS, will be reported. The results indicate that the irradiation causes considerable hardening and degradation of ductility. The YS increases in this study are slightly large in comparison with those irradiated at fission reactor. Strain-to-necking (STN) values show sufficient large ductility of the irradiated JPCA-SA and 316F-SA. The trends of the STN decrease in this study are slightly abrupt in comparison with those irradiated at fission reactor. All specimens, including irradiated at embrittlement temperature for austenitic steels, fractured in ductile manner.
