We have upgraded a 3-MeV linac at J-PARC. The ion source is same as the J-PARC linac's, and the old 30-mA RFQ is replaced by a spare 50-mA RFQ, therefore, the beam energy is 3 MeV and the nominal beam current is 50 mA. The main purpose of this system is to test the spare RFQ, but also used for testing of various components required in order to keep the stable operation of the J-PARC accelerator. The accelerator has been already commissioned, and measurement programs have been started. In this paper, present status of this 3-MeV linac is presented.

An in-flight separator, BigRIPS, at RIBF in RIKEN provides each experiment with specific nuclides separated from many nuclides produced by projectile fragmentation or in-flight fission. In this process, nuclides other than separated ones are discarded on the slits in BigRIPS, although they include many nuclides interested from the view point of nuclear structure. In order to extract these nuclides for parasitic experiments, we are developing a method using laser ion-source (PALIS). A test experiment with $$^{78}$$Se beam from RIBF has been performed by using a gas cell set in BigRIPS. Unstable nuclides around $$^{67}$$Se were stopped in the gas cell in accordance with a calculation using LISE code. The stopping efficiency has been estimated to be about 30%. As a next step, we will establish the technique for extracting reaction products from the gas cell.

Update of MPS modules for J-PARC Linac and RCS

Takahashi, Hiroki; Hayashi, Naoki; Nishiyama, Koichi*; Suzuki, Takahiro*; Ishiyama, Tatsuya*

Proceedings of 16th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.271 - 274, 2019/07

In the event of an abnormal situation, a machine protection system (MPS) that immediately inhibits the beam is indispensable to minimize the damage and the radioactivation by beam loss. The existing MPS was developed during the construction period of the J-PARC. Then, the system has been working stably for more than ten years. On the other hand, since there are many MPS modules that have been used from the beginning of J-PARC operation, it is important to systematically proceed with updating (replacement) of modules as a measure against aging of MPS. However, the main components of the existing MPS module have been discontinued. Therefore, it is indispensable to redesign the MPS modules in consideration of improvement such as the compatibility with existing modules and the miniaturization. In this paper, the development status of the new module and the update plan of MPS for Linac and RCS are detailed.

Hirano, Koichiro; Ishiyama, Tatsuya; Kurihara, Toshikazu*; Sugimura, Takashi*; Maruta, Tomofumi*

Proceedings of 14th Annual Meeting of Particle Accelerator Society of Japan (Internet), p.847 - 852, 2017/12

Beam scrapers made of carbon composite have been used in the MEBT1 between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC Linac. We have conducted the scraper irradiation test with the 3 MeV linac. The test piece of the scraper was irradiated by the H$$^{-}$$ beam up to particle number of 1.2E20. We measured the surface temperature of more than 3000$$^{circ}$$C using a high-speed radiation thermometer and observed the irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. When the surface temperature exceeded 2900$$^{circ}$$C, the ionic current of carbon and the irradiation damage on the surface of the test piece rapidly increased. This paper describes beam irradiation test results of the scraper.

We have used a beam scraper with the incident angle of 65deg to reduce the beam power deposition density in the MEBT between a 324 MHz RFQ and a 50-MeV DTL of the J-PARC linac. The 65$$^{circ}$$ scraper was irradiated by the H$$^{-}$$ beam up to particle number of 1.47E22. We observed a lot of surface projections with several hundred micrometers high in the beam irradiation damage on the scraper by using the laser microscope. In order to study the limits of scrapers, we constructed a new 3 MeV linac at J-PARC. We will conduct the scraper irradiation test at the end of this year.

Proceedings of INMM 57th Annual Meeting (Internet), 9 Pages, 2016/07

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has proposed in its long-term research and development (R&D) plan, development of a real-time measurement technology to monitor and verify nuclear material movement continuously as part of an advanced approach to effectively and efficiently conduct safeguards for reprocessing facilities. Since the Tokai Reprocessing Plant (TRP) has solutions containing both Pu and fission products (FP), a new detector development project to monitor Pu with FP is being carried out from 2015 to 2017. This project is mainly conducted in the High Active Liquid Waste Storage (HALWS) in the TRP. For the first step of this project, as the confirmation of composition of high active liquid waste (HALW) to evaluate neutron/$$gamma$$-ray emitted from solution in the selected HALW tank which has the most amount of Pu in HALW tanks at the TRP, we took HALW sample and conducted $$gamma$$-ray spectrum measurement for HALW. As a study of detector setting location, to survey the available neutron/$$gamma$$-ray (i.e. intensity) at the outside surface of the cell where HALW tank is located, we implemented continuous measurement by neutron/$$gamma$$-ray detector. In this paper, we report three $$gamma$$-ray peaks related with $$^{238}$$Pu and $$^{239}$$Pu measured in the composition research of HALW, which is needed to identify Pu amount by the new detector that we are developing and the result of radiation measurement on the surface of the cell.

Operator's contribution on the improvement of RII scheme against the process operation at PCDF

Nakamura, Hironobu; Shimizu, Yasuyuki; Makino, Risa; Mukai, Yasunobu; Ishiyama, Koichi; Kurita, Tsutomu; Ikeda, Atsushi*; Yamaguchi, Katsuhiro*

Proceedings of INMM 57th Annual Meeting (Internet), 9 Pages, 2016/07

Regarding the Integrated Safeguards (IS) in Japan, the implementation of IS has been started on September 2004, and the concept has been introduced to the JNC-1 facilities since August 2008. Then, random interim inspection with short notice and reducing person-days of inspection (PDI) was introduced instead of traditional scheduled IIV in order to improve deterrence of the nuclear material diversion with timeliness goal. And it was agreed that it should be evaluated and reviewed because RII was designed when inter-campaign. In JAEA, we decided to restart PCDF campaign to reduce potential safety risks of reprocessing facilities. To adopt the RII scheme to the process operation in campaign, JAEA proposed a new scheme to JSGO and IAEA without increasing PDI and reducing detection probability. As a result of the discussion, it was agreed and successfully introduced since March 2014. The new scheme for PCDF consists of scheduled inspection (fixed-day RII), reduction of estimated material for the verification, implementation of remote monitoring with data provision, improvement of operational status check list, introduction of NRTA and MC&A data declaration with timeliness. Though the operator's workloads for information provision were increased, we could manage to balance IS requirement with implementation of our operation successfully. This contribution was helped to safeguards implementation and our operation for 2 years.

Internal stress distribution for generating closure domains occurring in laser-irradiated Fe-3%Si(110) steels was investigated using high-energy X-ray analysis and domain theory based on the variational principle. The measured triaxial stresses inside the specimen were compressive and the stress in the rolling direction became more dominant than stresses in the other directions. The calculations based on the variational principle of magnetic energy for closure domains showed that the measured triaxial stresses made the closure domains more stable than the basic domain without closure domains. The experimental and calculation results reveal that the laser-introduced internal stresses result in the occurrence of the closure domains.

For radiation safety of the Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator, $$gamma$$-ray and neutron area monitoring system are designed. This system monitors and records the measured data by using both a supervisory board in the access room and central control system. The interlock signals are sent to Personnel Protection System (PPS) and Machine Protection System (MPS) when the integrated dose value exceeds a threshold value. After receiving them, the PPS and the MPS immediately inhibit the beam operation for secure radiation safety. This monitoring system is designed to achieve a high reliability for data transfer using hardwired interlock signals and the performance of data communication between area monitoring system and control system.

Operator's experience after introduction of random interim inspection at Tokai Reprocessing facilities

Makino, Risa; Ishiyama, Koichi; Kimura, Takashi; Yamazaki, Katsuyuki; Nakamura, Hironobu; Ikeda, Atsushi*; Yamaguchi, Katsuhiro*

Kaku Busshitsu Kanri Gakkai (INMM) Nihon Shibu Dai-33-Kai Nenji Taikai Rombunshu (Internet), 9 Pages, 2012/10

The Integrated Safeguards (IS) applied to JNC-1 site began from August, 2008. At that time, the inspection scheme was replaced from Interim Inventory Verification (IIV) with scheduled day to Random Interim Inspection (RII) with short notice in order to strengthen deterrent against diversion of nuclear materials. To satisfy the requirements for IS in Tokai reprocessing facilities including Tokai Reprocessing Plant and Plutonium Conversion Development Facility, we have cooperated inspectorates to establish remote monitoring systems, and to introduce RII smoothly. Though the new inspection scheme requires additional efforts which contain keeping a certain number of operators every day and declaration of interim inventory lists in a short time, the whole inspection days per year during inter-campaign could be decreased to about 60% by comparing with the conventional IIV. This paper reports the effects after introduction of RII and the future tasks to be discussed regarding RII during campaign from the operator's standpoint.

Study of system safety evaluation on LTO of national project; Structural integrity assessment of reactor pressure vessels

Onizawa, Kunio; Masaki, Koichi; Osakabe, Kazuya*; Nishikawa, Hiroyuki*; Katsuyama, Jinya; Nishiyama, Yutaka

Nihon Hozen Gakkai Dai-9-Kai Gakujutsu Koenkai Yoshishu, p.374 - 379, 2012/07

To assure the structural integrity of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is known as one of the critical issues to maintain the safe long-term operation of a nuclear power plant. In Japan, the assessment methods for RPV integrity, stipulated in the codes and standards, have been endorsed by the regulatory body. Authors have initiated extensive research on the improvement of structural integrity assessment methods of RPVs. In this paper, we describe some research results obtained from the first-year activity. These include the study on revisiting the technical background of the methods, such as loading conditions, postulated crack definition, the other evaluation methods. In addition, studies on probabilistic methods for the applicability to the current rules and the standardization of the probabilistic analysis methods have been presented.
